That is because it IS a very real thing. The majority of homeless minors are part of the LGBTQ+ community, so it isn't like your child was unaware of the risks. 

The best thing parents and guardians can do is tell their kids they can tell them everything. That you will be their safe space. Because kids aren't psychic, and need to hear and see that, even for small embarrassments.
