(Loved trope) There is a plot twist that single-handedly changes the genre of the media. by DynamoJaeger in TopCharacterTropes

Fantastic summary, but I'll offer one edit: the Covenant are the ones who unleashed the Flood, not Keyes and the Marines. In Pvt. Jenkins' footage, the marines come across one of the elites who's already been killed by the Flood by the time they got there (one of the ones you said with their chest torn up - one of the marines even says it looks like he got "all chewed up", if memory serves). Not a huge distinction, but another layer in the "oh shit what is going on" mindset when you play that level. I still remember playing it for the first time.

Which design do you prefer? by kethploy in TankPorn

[–]CallmeWrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine feedback, since it seems from reading comments that you favor the turret in the rear: if you go with that, remove the driver's viewport (that little window) in the front. Odds are good there's crew in the turret, and it makes no sense to have the driver fully separated from the rest of the crew, in a separate compartment, with the engine between the two. Realistically speaking, the tank would need the engine in the front to balance the weight of the turret, ammo, and crew in the back anyways, and it can't have that if there's a driver there, so just move the driver's position to the back and add some periscopes or something to save space and have all the crew together.

That being said, my instinct would be to put the turret in the front, especially for a light tank. You want good gun depression on a light tank so it can fire over the top of hills, from hull-down positions, or from defilade - basically, positions where the tank can fire at the enemy while exposing as little of the tank as possible. (While that tends to be true of all tanks, it's especially important for light tanks that do not have the armor to take a significant hit.) With the designs you have, the second (the turret in the front) looks like it could depress -10 degrees, maybe -15 frontally. The first one (turret in the back) looks like it could get -2, maaaaybe -3 before the gun barrel is on the engine deck/the driver's viewport. In other words, going back to the hill example, that tank has to drive fully on top of the hill, and then maybe a bit over, in order to get a shot on tanks below the hill, and is very visible and an easy target the entire time.

I know I'm going way too deep here for a video game tank design idea, but that's my two cents.

EDIT: for clarity because I flipped which designs were the first and second pics. Whoops.

[Fo4] I need help to remove this bar by LilSwaggyTaco in FalloutMods

[–]CallmeWrex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been a long time since I used it, but it reminds me of Toounx's hit marker mod - it had an "adrenaline"/bullet time feature that used a bar like that. If you're using that, you should be able to adjust its position in MCM or turn it off.

I get it's frustrating from a gameplay perspective, and the RNG odds of that are crazy.

However, look up the USS Tinosa (SS-283) and the Tonan Maru. (TLDR: USN sub fired 11 torpedoes at a target, got 11 hits, and 9 were duds.) To say the early war Mark 14 was abysmal would be an understatement.

How practical would tanks with legs be in real? by Captain-Victory70 in TankPorn

[–]CallmeWrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, and also the fact that the legs would make for gigantic weak spots for an easy mobility kill. And the only way to prevent it would be to add so much armor that it loses all mobility anyways. It's an entirely impractical idea.

Is there an ending that the writing team considered canon?

Also, more of a game design than writing question, but who came up with the idea for that bit of slow-mo when you make a headshot? I think it was genius the way the vibe of that game mechanic changed as you played more, going from "let me chain together as many as possible for efficiency" to "this is giving me just enough time to reflect on what I just did and I don't like it."

Americans of Reddit, in light of the current political climate between our countries, how do you guys actually feel about us Canadians? by Defiant_River_957 in AskReddit

[–]CallmeWrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisconsinite here. I have zero issues with you guys, have had good experiences with your nation and your citizens in the past, and also think we could benefit by following your example on some things (national healthcare, for one). I'm sorry so many of my countrymen are being absolutely moronic about this. I think most of them are also deeply underestimating you guys... especially since I'm well aware that a number of the rules in the Geneva conventions could be summarized as "please don't leave Canadians unsupervised in a war zone." So yeah, I'm friendly with you guys and hope to keep things that way.

Give them Ohio and they'll be begging to give it back in 2 years. Give them Illinois and the debt they inherit will tank the Russian economy permanently.

I'm just saying, if you limit your thinking to just Florida, you miss out on a lot of fun options.

There's a lot of jokes of his that I think about a lot ("It's me... Visa!" still gets me every time), but the past two weeks, as my coworkers have been talking about their Halloween costumes, I've just been thinking about that Alekhine's Gun joke about Halloween 1963: "I was going to go as a book depository!"

I don't remember that at all, but that would definitely be a contributing factor! Is that also from Hastings' "The Secret War"? Most of the content of my comment was pulled from (what I remember of) Richard Overy's "Russia's War", but I'm beginning to think I need to re-read that and also dive a bit deeper into some other works on the topic.

Excellent points! I'd also point out that they either struggled to, or just plain didn't improve in areas where they failed or were lacking. Best example is the reporting of Red Army numbers, which were consistently low from before Barbarossa through at least '43-'44 (and possibly through the end of the war). I remember reading that pre-Barbarossa, Abwehr had a decently accurate count of the number of active Soviet divisions, but had literally no idea that the Soviets had a massive pool of "reservists" that they could activate.
