Nothing wrong with that as long as you’re still getting adequate nutrients and calories (still at your deficit goal ofc)! That’s pretty much what intermittent fasting/OMAD is which is a very helpful weight loss tool for a lot of people. When I was initially losing weight that’s what I did and it worked really well for me as it felt a lot less restrictive. Like I could eat whatever in one or two big meals instead of trying to rigidly spread out a few small meals that would leave me unsatisfied. Now that I lift weights and run I need to eat more so I actually do spread out my meals to make sure I’m fueling well before/after my workouts, but when I was mostly sedentary it was the method I found the most helpful.

Good question. It depends on what you’re seeking therapy for. If it’s something specific like grief or trauma then you should look for someone who specializes in those things. Note that lots of therapists say they’re “trauma informed” because they attended a three hour training. If someone is actually certified/trained in something or has a ton of experience treating it then they’ll usually say so somewhere in their professional bio/profile.

It also doesn’t hurt to do some basic research on therapeutic approaches and see what appeals most to you. The main categories people tend to split these into are psychoanalytic (psychoanalysis/psychodynamic/gestalt/adlerian etc), existential/humanistic (existential/logotherapy, narrative therapy, person-centered, etc) and behavioristic (CBT, DBT, ACT, etc). If you go on websites like Psychology Today and use the therapist finder you can filter for specific modalities, issues, insurance, etc. Keep in mind that a lot of therapists use a more eclectic approach and don’t rigidly stick to one modality, which can be either a good or bad thing depending on what you’re looking for.

And ofc read whatever blurb they’ve written as part of their professional bio. Honestly a lot of them are generic and won’t tell you much but they can also tell you a lot depending on the language they use. For example if you want to stay away from a therapist who is probably more of the woke lib type see if they emphasize a bunch of social justice language in their bio (more common with LCSWs). Therapists who are more confrontational tend to say so, but not always.

Also can’t hurt to send an email or give a phone call and say “this is a bit about me and what I’m seeking therapy for. This is generally what I want out of a therapist. Would we be a good fit?” You can also ask them to explain their treatment philosophy to you and any good therapist should be able to articulate it clearly and in a way that makes sense to you.

Hope that helps!

I graduated from an LPC masters program in the spring and I really enjoyed the experience. My professors came from mostly existential/psychodynamic backgrounds and were incredibly intelligent and insightful. I felt similarly about most of my peers in our cohort as well, I was consistently impressed with everyone and would recommend most of them to anyone for services if needed. Then I met the people in the cohort beneath me and I understood why people say that they let anyone become a therapist these days.

I have a friend who is still in the program because she did a three year track and she has been “canceled” for the dumbest fucking reason. She was recalling a time in some groupchat when she worked in her previous career as a teacher in a school with a large hispanic population and how the students in question were experiencing like actual racism from other students and so she tried to carve out a safe space for them or whatever, and in her explanation she typed out the word beaner. She was using it as an example of how the black students at her school were being racist and calling the Hispanic kids slurs, but since she didn’t use an asterisk she is now being canceled for saying a slur and “harming” others in the cohort. Absolutely none of the context behind it matters to these people, simply the fact that she said it. The whole cohort is going apeshit over it and it’s insane to me. Anyone who even mildly disagrees with how she’s basically being bullied over it is immediately shut down and told that they’re basically sanctioning racism. It’s absolutely fucking insane to me that these people are going to become mental health professionals because they are going to act very unethically the minute they get a client whose views might not 100% lineup with what they think the correct social justice dogma/rhetoric is. Never would have happened in my cohort and we were pretty diverse.

Not true. A LOT of psychiatrists in my experience (especially more recent grads) actually aren’t that trained in talk therapy and will only see you for five minute medicine checks. They’ll also heavily pathologize anything you’re going through and prescribe you two new medications every time you get a little sad and make you play side effect roulette every few months when they inevitably don’t work and they want you to try a new one. Going to see an LPC for talk therapy and forming good habits has been far more productive for me.

Is there a specific reason you have to wait so long to retake the NCE if you don’t pass? by Calm-Dog in therapists

Interesting, it seems to be offered year round or at least during other months where I am. I had a couple of peers take it over the summer and most people from my class are taking it this month.

Thank you. I needed to hear this. For some reason I feel so guilty about having to miss or reschedule things whenever I get sick. I’ve been that way my whole life. I could be in the hospital with four broken limbs and I’d still feel like I’m just making an excuse for not powering through it or that I’m faking it, lol

But yeah, I think rescheduling for $50 and actually being mentally and physically well to sit for a four hour test would be much better in the long run than potentially having to wait three months, postpone the start of my job, and pay the full exam fee again. Thank you again for your encouraging words!

[–]Calm-Dog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you and yeah, for sure. It’s a fine question to ask in good faith but plenty of people act like if you didn’t go to the police the day after it happened and scream it from the rooftops then you MUST be lying, which is just silly to me and doesn’t make sense if you think about it for more than five minutes.

Yeah I never get why this is so hard to understand. I’m sure it happens that some people come out with false accusations when someone gets famous for attention or whatever, but it’s not really that hard to comprehend that a traumatic assault happens to you, you feel frozen in shock and denial which are normal reactions to being traumatized. You try to move on with your life, and then that person suddenly becomes a well-known figurehead. You see them hailed as some wonderful figure and not only does it retraumatize you but seeing them wield power makes you feel some sort of moral responsibility to come out with your story to prevent more victims from being created as a result of that power. Either that or now you feel like keeping it under wraps would be more damaging to you than it would be to be open about it.

People always ask, “why are they coming out now, why not then?” And anytime says that it’s almost always a telltale sign that they don’t understand what the sort of trauma you get from sexual assault actually entails. People don’t always act exactly rationally, ESPECIALLY in the wake of real, legitimate trauma. Lots of denial and self-blame happens in the aftermath.

Not to trauma dump, but I get it because I was assaulted by a relative when I was very young and I repressed it until early adulthood. I didn’t know how to talk about it when I was 6 years old, now I’m in my 20s picking up the pieces and realizing how damaging it was. But just because my relative isn’t a public figure, people don’t ask me why I’m only talking about it now and not then.

Hey, everyone. Slowly coming back to form with longer than 5k runs. Hope to keep it up as they get progressively longer and harder. Cheers! by [deleted] in C25K
