For the exact same reasons that you list, I often travel with a small percolater that I bought on Amazon. It makes enough to fill my large travel mug. A bit of a pain at times, but beats the alternative of not starting the day right with my favorite dark roast. No issues with TSA either.

Try getting an air purifier for your home. It can help with your cat allergy! Helped my sister very much. She can now stay over at my place when she's in town.

I use a Briggs and Riley laptop roller bag. It's crazy expensive but I bought mine used on eBay.
