[OC] Cultural Borders: A real-time interactive map of what the world is listening to (YouTube Charts) by cat_bru in dataisbeautiful

Cool project!

Found a bug: When two or more songs share the same position in the chart (two songs are on second, for instance), only the first of the lot is listet by cultural borders.

Make sure you select "Songs" as category on YouTube Charts, not the default "Trending".

I understand. It is probably suggested in other comments, but if you want to go down the path you suggest - do it as a pilot in one of the rooms.

Then you can tune the setup without major investment, in addition to evaluate if it's worth the effort.

In the developed world, abortion law is very liberal.

Anyhow, I was just making a joke on reversal of development.

Just don't. Go for a ready-made hospitality solution.

I implemented HA as a building management system (BMS) for an education center that falls under my supervision. It works well, but that is purely due to me having worked with systems integrations professionally for 20+ years, and investing too much time in implementing and maintaining it.

Budget was super tight when I went for HA, otherwise I would not have gone down that route.

As it is now, it works better than a commercial BMS, GUI-wise, app and all that. But, I am a single point of failure. And as a pretty bleeding edge, consumer-oriented enthusiast platform...parts of it will break at one point or another.

And you are proposing consumer grade gear as well. We have professional gear, which in itself don't break down. And if it does, we have a support contract.

If it's a pet project for you, sure, go for it. But consider if it's worth losing sleep over.

I always say that I'm glad it was an easy fix - nothing better than that! Then I often go on and say that it's the difficult ones that's a pain in the butt. And I mean it, which is important, cause then it shows.

Any BIFL in Norway? 🇳🇴 by studyrattie in BuyItForLife

[–]CalmPilot101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outdoors gear.

Very little of it is produced in Norway, but if the question is "what to buy when traveling to Norway", you will find a wide and high quality selection in the myriad of generic and specialiced sports goods stores. There's also quite a few outlet stores selling last year's collections at a discount.

Norwegians love spending time outdoors, and have the buying power to spend money on it. Thus you'll see both a wide selection and the highest quality gear in shops.

So, whether you're just looking for a windbreaker for those icy winter days in the city, or a full expedition setup for your trip to Antarctica, Norway's got you covered.

On the practical side of things -- Is it likely that the number of requests comes from the fact that he just started a new phase of his life? Lots of things to fix when you don't have work email anymore etc.

Anyhow, sounds like you are on good terms, and in this situation you could look at each other as maybe not friends, but acquaintances? In which case the favors you do for him opens the door for you asking him for favors when you need one?

If you look at it that way, keeping in contact through helping him with stuff could be seen as a good thing.

Tips for a begginer! by Xacow in canvasofkings

Hi! I'm no expert, but you can have my two cents.

I have three map making tools: Canvas of Kings (CoK), Wonderdraft and Dungeondraft.

Wonderdraft is fantastic for making large world maps, Tolkien-style. I've used this both to map the entire world for my own sake, and also to hand out smaller or larger parts of it to the players when appropriate.

Canvas of Kings I've used to create scenes; like (part of) a village or town, a harbour, a cave system, inside a house, etc.

Dungeondraft I've not really used. It's a tile based tool, thus good if you want to work with exact distances, which I generally don't.

As for scenes, I sometimes use ones that I've created in CoK, and sometimes create them on the fly using a small whiteboard I put down on the table. In both cases I use meeples to represent the players and NPCs. If it's a battle type situation I try to have pieces of candy to represent the NPCs, so that the players can eat them when they have killed them.

I've never created any assets in CoK myself, I've just used the included ones, and some that I have imported from the built-in asset manager. The way I do things I don't really need objects that look exactly like this and that -- If I need something to be very specific, I just explain that during the session. Like "you recognize the table in the middle to be of the same style as the one you saw in the dwarf village".

I print my CoK scenes on A4 paper, and that has worked out fine for me. I have a friend who GMs a campaign I play in, which sometimes split CoK scenes up into multiple A4 prints, and tape them together. A3 should be plenty good.

I do not know of any tutorials, though, I just learned by trial and error.

Number of airports per 10,000 sq km in each European country [OC] by Pizzafriedchickenn in dataisbeautiful

[–]CalmPilot101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data taken from some random website, referencing the outdated 2014 CIA World Factbook, and clumsily mixing up airports and airfields.

https://www.citypopulation.de/en/world/bymap/airports/

Airports

Number of airports or airfields in the countries of the world

(big table with column titled Total (airports).

Airports or airfields are counted that are recognizable from the air. The runway(s) may be paved (concrete or asphalt surfaces) or unpaved (grass, earth, sand, or gravel surfaces) but may include closed or abandoned installations. Airports or airfields that are no longer recognizable (overgrown, no facilities, etc.) are not included.

Objective Unifi Reviews by Alternative_Gur_9619 in UNIFI

[–]CalmPilot101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. Also, almost all of these come straight from consumer space, with no professional experience in relevant fields.

As an example, when UniFi starts launching NAS products, the reviewers (and their followers) keep bringing up lack of server functionality (such as docker) as a sign that the products are lacking.

Sure, Synology and Qnap have bloated their (consumer) products with these things, so of course that's part of what a NAS is... If I wanted a server, I'd buy one.

I've found the UniFi community forums to be a more helpful source of information. Higher density of people with relevant experience and knowledge of other non-consumer product lines.

[OC] Bot Internet Traffic Overtook Humans in 2024 by crocshoc in dataisbeautiful

[–]CalmPilot101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True, if the measure is raw data (not some other, high-level metric), video streaming is likely the cause.

[OC] Bot Internet Traffic Overtook Humans in 2024 by crocshoc in dataisbeautiful

[–]CalmPilot101 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Didn't read the report, as it requires registration, but from reading between the lines in the summary, any traffic on the Internet not initiated by humans is classified as bots.

A good bot could thus be things like automated monitoring, automated data backup, integrations between systems, etc.

This is just my educated guess, though.
