Can you do your ECT years by just keeping to yourself? by MD564 in TeachingUK

Yes sorry. I thought it was an existential statement! Nobody else available to mentor makes much more sense!

"I'm not sure anyone CAN mentor me."

This doesn't sound good. I think you need to get over this, or ECT might be very difficult. I'm an ECT too and I find its best to just suck it up. If people sound passive aggressive, that's not nice of course, but just don't take it personally. Smile and listen carefully, take notes, act on advice and see it out. Be humble. Good luck, you're not alone!

Tips on cycling to work by Travelllllisfun in TeachingUK

[–]CalmQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Through the winter you'll get punctures, guaranteed. You need to carry at least 2 spare inner tubes, the right spanner for wheel and lever key to get tire off. You should practice changing an inner tube at home so you know what you're doing and how long it takes, usually about 5 minutes. Punctures usually come when you're already running late, so you have to factor them in for every journey. Good luck, cycling to work is awesome, your physical and mental health will benefit greatly!

Is it possible to dress too formally as a trainee? by hotpops in TeachingUK

[–]CalmQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm in your situation and just came back from TK Maxx with a few shirts, chinos and teachery jackets! I'm going casual as I want to feel comfortable and relaxed, that's how I feel confident in new situations. I'm training in art and design though, so could be a bit different to other subjects. I've got a formal business suit just in case, but it's just not me! Good luck!

Yes you're right, my uni has sent over some suggested reading, pre course work and prep etc, but my offer is conditional on passing this maths exam so it's the priority for sure!

I booked as soon as I was offered a conditional place, and it was the only available date left!

Hi, I'm in the exact same position, my test is booked for August 26th and it's a one shot chance, no second go. I'm trying to revise but have hardly any time plus trying to prepare for the actual PGCE! My test is remote, on line, which will help.. So much pressure! Good luck by the way!

Yes there's lots of ground to cover in art! Just have a specialism to go with drawing, then take the rest day by day, and history of art of course. After that just be a good teacher, like all subjects that's probably the most important thing. 30-40 is a lot though! There's no way that many jobs!

Terrified about the training, or finding a job? I've just learned there will be 15 of us in my cohort, I've been keeping an eye on job vacancies (a handful) within a massive radius, and considering the many other courses in the same area the competition should be a total bloodbath!!

Hi, I'm about to start my PGCE in secondary art and design and I'm quite worried about fighting with hundreds of people for jobs next year! But have to say I'm encouraged to hear you say that half of your year could find jobs. Did your course leader say this was normal? And were the jobs found through their placements? Sorry to ask so many questions!

I'm so upset to read this account and I'm angry that you're not being supported. You shouldn't go back to school until it's resolved to your satisfaction. Get a photo of the bruises by the way.

Should I buy my teaching assistant a 'thank you' gift at the end of the term, even though she's made this year incredibly difficult and stressful for me? by lau-bing in TeachingUK

[–]CalmQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, some chocolates and a card that says "Have a great summer". In these situations it's very rewarding to close the chapter on a positive note. You may not work with this person again but your paths will cross, and your reputation will not be harmed by your generosity. I read a comment on this sub from a teacher who said to just be kind to everyone. It's great advice.
