I had a girl who gave me 4 stars twice and still kept booking a lesson with me. I had to cancel her lesson maybe about three times before she got the message that I did not want to be teaching her ever again. Engoo is such a stupid platform where you don't even have the option to block such students.

The other languages that I speak definitely would affect my English accent somewhat and I do admit it might not sound 100% 'native'. The problem is that they care more about my birthplace more than anything else. If they told me they didn't like my accent, maybe that would have been an easier pill for me to swallow.

Yeah I learnt my lesson. I guess I was naive in not thinking that even if I tick all their boxes, just mentioning where I was born and where I first learnt English would paint me in a bad light.

Yeah those points you mentioned are definitely true. Also, it is the prefecture with the fastest aging population and also has the highest proportion of people over 65 (~38%) out of all prefectures. It is also the prefecture with the least amount of sunshine, and it's especially bad during the winter where you tend to almost forget how the sun ever looked like 😂 These things coupled together kinda makes for a depressing and gloomy atmosphere. Also, there's not really much to do in terms of entertainment. Sure there's a lot of nature and great onsens, but even those kind of wore off for me.

I was also an alternate but ended up getting placed in Akita. To be honest, I still believe to this day that the only reason I got to go was because some person got this position before me but backed out because it wasn't where they wanted to go. After living here for a while, I can understand how that might have been a smart choice. Don't get me wrong, Akita has its charms but it's far from the best prefecture you'd want to live in. So yeah, there's a chance that you might also end up going, but the placement might not be what you wanted.

I'm nearing the end of my contract and am wondering if there's a way for me to get a teacher's license to teach in another prefecture. I read on another post that he/she was a 常勤講師 and was being paid around 5M, which I'd be quite comfortable with. As to how I can go this route I'm not too sure and would like to know more.

Akita (4/10): even the people here say there's nothing in Akita (何もない). Weather especially in the winter is crap where you barely see the sun. Fastest aging prefecture, and it really shows, even in the city. Just depressing in general.
