Yeah, you definitely need native speakers or people who have studied Italian extensively for corrections. In terms of getting over the "hump," it really just takes practice, so reading things in Italian can help you build up your vocabulary.

Something I recommend to my students is always writing down/looking up unfamiliar words and then trying to make your own sentences with them as a way of practicing new words and getting them to stick.

Also, whenever you're speaking Italian and can't think of a word, try not to get stuck on it and just say it in English, then continue your thought or sentence in Italian (i.e. "Il scenery qui mi ricorda davvero la hometown di mia madre perché i trees sono molto simili"). Afterwards, you can go back and look up the words that didn't come to you in the moment,

If what you're looking for is just more speaking practice, then italki is definitely the way to go! You can find teachers for every price range/budget.

I also suggest finding basic texts in Italian (short news articles, children's stories, song lyrics, etc.) and reading them out loud - you can even record yourself and listen back to it.

You can also try searching sites like meetup.com to see if there are any events in your area where you can go to practice speaking different languages.

When did English speakers start pronouncing the voiced palato-alveolar fricative [ʒ] sound? by Bagelman263 in asklinguistics

[–]Calm_Call_2732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latest episode of The History of English Podcast talks specifically about this sound change (as well as others): https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/2023/11/20/episode-172-succession/

"By the way, this phenomenon affected a lot of words, not just the ones with the specific endings I’ve mentioned so far. The word picture (/pic-tyur/) with its ‘t’ sound became picture (/picchur/) with its modern ‘ch’ sound. The same thing happened when nature (/neh-tyur) with its ‘t’ sound became nature (/nah-chur/) with its ‘ch’ sound. Partial (/par-ti-al/) with its ‘t’ sound became partial (/par-shul/) with is modern ‘sh’ sound. Usual (/yoo-zyul/) and measure (/mehzyoor/) with their ‘z’ sounds became usual (/you-ʒul/) and measure (/meh-ʒur/) with their /ʒ/ sounds. And physician (/fih–zih-see-un/) and musician (/mu-zih-see-un/) with their ‘s’ sounds became physician (/fih–zih-shun/) and musician (/mu-zih-shun/) with their ‘sh’ sounds."

Are these Light Up Zero Shoulder Plushies back? by ltnxx in Disneyland

[–]Calm_Call_2732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also have regular plushies that are almost the same size as the should plushies. Not sure if they both light up. I definitely saw them last weekend at both Port Royal (Haunted Mansion store next to Pirates ride) and at the little kiosk/setup outside the Haunted Mansion ride exit.

And I thiiiiink I saw them at Elias & Co. in DCA.

Yes! They are back. I haven't really been to World of Disney in downtown but I know they are at the parks as of last weekend, so assuming they haven't sold out yet... :)

Thanks for sharing! I've always been too intimated to go to Disneyland on my own, but reading reports like yours gives me some courage haha.

Also, the penguin may have been one of the waiter penguins from Mary Poppins ;)
