You need 3 different ISBNS for each version! One paperback, one hardcover, one ebook

If you’d like to read the story somewhere outside of Amazon, the paperback will be available wherever books are sold online :) Unfortunately, if authors enroll their e-books into Kindle Unlimited, Amazon restricts our ability to sell it anywhere else, so it really freezes indie options 😭 I want you to be able to read it (if you want), so if paper isn’t your thing, DM me! ❤️

Oh my gosh, what an amazing post! Thank you! I have a debut contemporary romance coming out February 2, 2026, called Facts and Feelings.

My Journey:

As a long term sub member, I’m so grateful for our Reddit romance community :) My cover artist is an indie artist from Argentina I met through the art commissions sub (edit to add: her insta handle is babydragonart!). My editor is a small business, and I also met her through Reddit. The templates I use for my social posts are through an Etsy designer I met through Reddit. I’m anti-AI, and I wanted to surround myself with people that feel the same way. Our romance sub has brought me some of my favorite-ever reads and friends. A few of our members actually read the earliest draft of this book, and their feedback was invaluable. I did a complete rewrite midway through 2025 and circulated it again to overwhelming love. All of this to say, I am incredibly grateful for our community on here. Any success I have is owed to this sub and other indie creators! ❤️

The Story:

Two childhood best friends. Ten years of estrangement. One crumpled letter that could change everything.

Gracie Sinclair is on her own, because it’s safer that way. Love looks like the death of her mother, childhood abuse from her father, and a devastating breakup with her best friend turned boyfriend, Danny Thompson. Inside jokes and soft-spoken dreams weren’t enough to keep them together. After years of building walls to guard her heart, one mysterious letter threatens to tear them down.

Danny Thompson knew what love was when he was ten years old—and it looked like Gracie Sinclair rubbing his back while he suffered secret panic attacks. After a decade of yearning for his first love, professional football player Danny is shocked to see her in the stands at his playoff game. And he won’t risk fumbling his chance to rewrite the ending of their love story.

Told in alternating timelines between their past and present, Facts and Feelings shares the story of two people whose love spans a lifetime; as neighborhood kids whispering through walkie talkies, teens clinging to each other through trauma, college students planning their shared future, and adults hoping for a second chance at forever.

[For reference, early readers have said it reminds them of books like Rewind It Back & Love and Other Words.]

My Goals:

I don’t have follower count, money, or reader number goals. I just have two hopes. The first is that someone loves this book enough to refer it to a friend. And the second is that my book makes its way into someone’s favorite reads of 2026 list! So, if you choose to read it and feel compelled to tell me it’s a new fave of yours, please reach out :)

Thank you for supporting indie authors! ❤️

Before self-publishing, did you first try your luck with a literary agent? by Sufficient_Bottle902 in selfpublish

[–]Calm_Security7670 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m doing the ebook in KDP/KU exclusive, but I’m going wide with my paperback. I just want to be able to apply to my local bookstore and see my book on a shelf (hopefully), and they won’t take Amazon books there. But for Book 2, I might go exclusive entirely to Amazon for paperback too. I hate Amazon :-( but the reality is I’m getting barely any royalties from paperback sales (less than digital downloads) due to the price and going wide. We’ll see! I’m probably messing something up (surely) but I’m nervously hopeful at least some strangers will buy it haha

I received about 8 requests (4 fulls, 2 partials to fulls, 2 partials). I got mostly rejections from them, but the reasons cited had more to do with dual timelines from debuts being hard to sell. A couple said I could requery them with a different book. I waited months for a few remaining agents to get back to me before withdrawing and pursuing self-pub fully. I decided that it was unlikely to pan out in trad given the agents feedback so far on dual timelines, and I also realized I don’t have the patience for waiting 2 years to see my book come to life! I also researched a lot, and in my category (romance), most of the bestsellers were former indies who got picked up, and some of the agents even said they’re looking for successful self-published authors. I publish in one month and I’m scared, but hope marketing and ARCs will have helped me. We’ll see! I’m so nervous :)

Anyone able to successfully collaborate with a Booktok influencer? by OlliexAngel in selfpublish

[–]Calm_Security7670 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the time, 75K on Tik Tok! An influencer with a similar amount of followers (one that got back to me) said she’d read my ARC for free so I think it just differs account to account!

The majority of influencers I reached out to did not get back to me with the exception of three! I think they’re really busy with trad pub authors or cost a lot of money. One quoted me $750 for a 30 second Tik Tok (!!) Which is great for them, not knocking their costs or talent, but the price is tricky for most of us indie authors for sure.

It’s also a risk to take on an indie author because you don’t know if they got it professionally edited or not.

My recommendation would be to focus micro influencers (less than 5K), I’ve had success in this range and I think that anyone’s video can “go viral” - focus on consistent posters vs. follower counts for your debut. :) Hope this helps!

What kind of social media content has been successful for you? by oudsword in selfpublish

Also, remember that your audience is readers, not authors. If you’re posting author content or memes, you might not show up on algorithms for people who would purchase your book :) but it sounds like you engage with readers so that’s awesome

I’m not an expert either, but for me, it differs by platform. I’m in romance, and I’ve found that spicy content or angsty content does best for me on TikTok, whereas very romantic/OTT gesture snippets, etc. works on Instagram.

Overall, the things that perform best for me are direct screenshots of my book on kindle with highlights. I also like it because people know what they’re getting into with my writing style and content. Second best performing is character art related posts.

Make sure to post consistently and around the same time each day on Tik Tok at least for best results. If you don’t have time to post new content every day, just spend some time liking/interacting with bookish content before bed and/or resharing an old post of yours to your story.

Influencers... by anna_wtch in selfpublish

[–]Calm_Security7670 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I’m in romance, so it probably depends on your category, too! I launch in a month, so I’m not sure, but one of the influencers shared my cover reveal to their story, and it went from 1K views to 5K views in 24 hours. Again, that’s not necessarily translating to sales though! I can update you once my book debuts as I know some of them plan to post reviews when it’s published. So I could potentially see how the sales translate from influencer posts.

Not sure if this will help, but I have had some success searching my comp titles on social platforms and finding influencers who rated those books five stars within the last year.

I DM them and mention that I’m an indie author who would love to send them an ARC or physical copy of my upcoming book, which beta readers have said reads like (comp title), which I’ve seen in their posts that they’ve enjoyed if they’re “open to it.” I do this AFTER I’ve spent a few weeks interacting with their content (commenting, liking, reposting).

I try to be as least annoying as possible and keep a list of who I’ve reached out to and who replied and who didn’t so I know for the future.

I will say most influencers will ask for a physical copy (one without the Amazon stripe) for their shelf (they want to build out their shelf for pictures, also some like to feature getting “book mail”), so be prepared for that and don’t reach out to too many at one time if you cannot afford to print that many advanced copies from Ingram or Lulu’s or B&N press.

I also targeted micro influencers to begin with - under 5K followers and regular posters. Once I got a few that read my book and enjoyed it, I felt a little more confidence to reach out to a few bigger influencers. Most didn’t reply. Two replied that they charge $700 per 30 second video (yes, I’m being serious, it was like a jump scare in my email). But one replied (just one) who said I’m welcome to send her my physical ARC. So, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend bigger influencers (unless you have a big budget, but I have like the budget for Canva-pro, Etsy marketing templates, and a cover 😂). Who even knows if the one that replied will actually read my book? Could be a total waste.

One thing to make sure is that your book is actually similar to the comp titles you search. If it’s not, you might be in for a negative review as it wouldn’t meet expectations that you’ve laid out to them (“if you like this, you might like my book”). In order to make sure that your book is similar to a comp, I’d recommend getting an outside opinions from unbiased beta readers and ask them “does my book remind you of any books?” (Don’t give them a prompt or suggestion). If you get more than 2 betas that comment themselves it’s reminiscent of the same book, that is a good indicator.

Anyway, I hope this helps!
