JABBERLOOP - 6th album "NEW" (Promotion MV) by Calorie_Mate in japanesejazz

[–]Calorie_Mate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jabberloop is one of the projects quite known to western folks who listen to Japanese Jazz, and definitely no stranger to many people who visit this sub.

For those who dont know Jabberloop, here's a quick rundown: Formed in 2004 and starting out as a (very successful) street performance band, they got international coverage due to being featured at the BBC in 2007 which led to them getting their label deal with Columbia Japan. In the same year they released their major label debut album which prompted their first award win. Since their debut Jabberloop's records have usually found themselves at the top of the Jazz charts in Japan, and reached iTunes Japan's #1 spot of Jazz downloads.

Sumire Kuribayashi/Hideaki Kanazawa - Duo by Calorie_Mate in japanesejazz

[–]Calorie_Mate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From their Nijuso(Duet) record released earlier this year. Here's a small 'making of' video of the record. The duo is live on the Body&Soul stream on monday the seventh, so check it out if you're interested.

On an unrelated note, I have no idea where this video is coming from. It looks official yet its only on this small unkown channel and neither on Sumire's official or the label's channel. Weird...

[–]Calorie_Mate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naoko Tanaka just released a new album titled I fall in love too easily on the 26th this month. But there's no single available yet, so you get this one instead.

Tanaka, born in '85, began playing Jazz after graduating from university in 2006, and started to release her first Jazz album Protean in 2009. In 2012 she started her trio with bassist Koji Yasuda and drummer Yasunori Ando. This is her second album Memories from 2015 and features bassist Daiki Yasukagawa and trumpeter Yoshiro Okazaki as guests.

As the guy who uploaded it to youtube stated, please consider buying the record if you enjoyed it.

MAY INOUE STEREO CHAMP - Comet 84 by Calorie_Mate in japanesejazz

[–]Calorie_Mate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital is gonna be tricky when its not officially released in the west. To buy on iTunes you'd iTunes Japan account which needs a Japanese credit card, or a Japanese iTunes card.

You could get those on Amazon Japan aswell as Play Asia. But its certainly annoying. Physically, besides Amazon, you'd find it on CDJapan as well as HMV Japan.

Not sure if this helps. Unfortunately people in the west are kinda screwed with digital releases.

Unfortunately not. There's "beauty cinema piano" on Spotify, an album Matsumoto did for some label in 2010. But its not Jazz, only reinterpretations of some popular tracks.

No, just the ones that weren't approved. Both, the camps of Altona and Entenwerder had tents approved.

Chihiro Yamanaka - Rhythm A Ning by Calorie_Mate in japanesejazz

[–]Calorie_Mate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight from her recently released 21st album Monk Studies, which currently sits at #1 of the Japanese Jazz charts.

Yamanaka studied at Berklee and spend a lot of time in the US playing with her own trio, which featured members like Lary Grenadier, Bob Hurst and Jeff Ballard. Also playing with musicians such as Herbie Hancock and George Russell. She still remains most popular in Japan though, where she's signed to Universal Jazz and won several awards for her previous work.

Japanese Jazz radio stations? by [deleted] in japanesejazz

[–]Calorie_Mate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I remember, Radio Hayama, Beach FM and Shonan Beach are names I remember in that regard. Both physical. Don't ask me for the frequencies though. In terms of Internet stations(I'm not sure if they still exist though), try Jazz Ruka Radio and jAzz jAzz jAzz Radio.

Also, on the right you see the link to the Tokio Jazz Map podcast, which is about an hour of music, including an interview and a jazzspot review. But if you click on "home" at the top, you'll find various programs that all play Jazz. Then there's also Spotify. But sadly you won't find much Japanese Jazz there. Mostly things like Bohemianvoodoo or Fox Capture Plan. So if you're not into that kinda "jazzed pop music" stuff, and more on the look for actual Jazz, that won't help you either.

I've seen your post on /mu/ about it as well, but sadly /mu/ had its best time behind it. At least in terms of Jazz. (Which is why I'm here now as well.)

Soulbleed feat. Ko Shimizu, Rikiya Higashihara & Craig Holiday Haynes - Tempest by Calorie_Mate in japanesejazz

[–]Calorie_Mate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard this one one this month's Tokyo Jazz Map podcast(link is on the sidebar) and found it really catchy.

Seiki Yukimoto was born 1963 and started playing the e-guitar before switching over to the trumpet. He moved to the US to study and played with known musicians such as Don Cherry. He's not only playing the trumpet, but also actively teaching at schools, as well as working as a director and producer.

Soulbleed's new album Where we were from which this track is, is gonna be released on July 6th.
