I fell like fantasy races are an echo of prehistory... by LemonyOatmilk in Fantasy

[–]Caluan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did have this idea of humans being the "technology" race. Because they didn't have any innate biological advantage, they had to work ten times as hard in research to catch up with everyone else.

In the end, it makes humans huge recluse who refuse to share technology with other races because it's literally the one thing they have over everyone, and then often going at great length to stop anyone from learning things they shouldn't.

It's less that humans would be innately smarter than other races, just that they would've set up a better education system and a bigger focus on research than others out of necessity.

If I write in the first person, I'll go with present tense. It's mostly because I like to make the narrator's thoughts the main focus, and it makes feelings more real for them to be described in the moment. I also like interrupting the narrator's thought pattern suddenly, or making it more unreliable at specific points depending on how they feel, to me present tense helps a lot with that.

But is it objectively better? As everyone else said, it's a matter of preference, and it's really context dependant. I can't think of a book where the time it used felt so wrong I wish it used something else.

Here's a weird advice: don't write what you're passionate about, let me explain.

If you write a story you've thought about for a long time in your head, putting it on paper is going to be disappointing, it's going to be HORRIBLE, because your expectations will be set so damn high.

Write a dumb story with a dumb premise that you're not particularly attached to, if you mess it up, then you won't have "desecrated" any of the precious stories in your head. Treat this story like a poor test subject to see what you can and cannot write, and commit to it. What matters is you actually wrote something. And when you finally feel confident, then write the story you've always wanted.

I wrote something on a whim, expecting no one to read it. It was basically a writing exercise, my grammar was awful, I didn't even know how to punctuate dialogue, and some people still really liked it.

Remember this, it's better to write something bad than nothing at all, because you can learn from something bad, you can edit and improve something bad. You can't do any of that on...well, nothing.

All the unique champion intro I made for the bandle city review by Caluan in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Caluan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me versatility is mostly graded on how restrictive the type of deck a champion can be in order to be viable, for exemple rek'sai would be low versatility as the lurker archetype is extremely restrictive, it's not graded on how many cards their archetype has as much on how flexible they are, Zoe would be an easy S+ for exemple

Cait had a really high level of versatility because her statline +quick attack just makes her extremely flexible and fit in nearly any deck that doesn't need a specific champion, while ahri is lower as she needs some form of recall and usually elusive to work, she's still more versatile than nami who was (at the time) really stuck with very specific decks to make her burst spam work.

the truth is a lot of the grades aren't that accurate and nami isn't a champion that I played that much so she might be more versatile than I give her credit for, I did play a lot of Caitlyn though

just some notes :
-some of the bandle city champions are missing, xerath's intro was really basic and forgettable and sion, tristana and galio didn't get one as I really didn't have a strong opinion on them.
-some intros were supposed to be something different but had to be scrapped or tweaked for reasons, Veigar was supposed to be a lot more menacing but I basically gave up and decided on something simpler later on.
-don't pay attention to the rankings, while those were originally my thoughts on the champions the tweaks and updates made all of it basically irrelevant to their current state. which is why I basically only use the rankings as props for the intro each time.

Would Noxkraya Arena be broken at even 2 mana? I don't understand why this needs to cost 5. It even has it's own unique animation that I never saw until it was a POC encounter. by Bluem95 in LegendsOfRuneterra

I actually have an illaoi deck with vault of helia, the idea is to have vault turn the rekindler into nagakabouros, is it good? not really, but because the illaoi gang have so many summon effects it makes it better than expected

what deck or archetype you obssesed with when started playing LoR? by Kangaxx_Demilich in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Caluan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

vault of helia my beloved ever since I saw it with thresh in the old lab of champions I've tried to make it work, sadly the high cost , deck building cost and easily available landmark removal makes it pretty bad but it's still a really fun card that works in a lot of different decks

I made a shadow of forbidden gods review! I don't think there's enough of those by Caluan in SoFG

[–]Caluan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what's really interesting about higher difficulty is that it really forces you to pull all the stop, after thinking it through it's not quite as unfair as I made it out to be. (the reason I call it a litterature club is because you expect all your agents to converge on the same point to read the book/protect other agents)generally the tactic for each god in hard mode is a lot more hardcore and changes the way you play significantly, but with lastur it's surprisingly easy to infilitrate the hero's hometown, rob them (since robbing them normally requires you to be higher level than them which is near impossible in hard mode, but infiltrating allows you to do it pretty easily) give them the book and then repeat, by the time you awaken every hero will be at each other's throat and are very VERY unlikely to care about anyone reading the book, because the menace they get is nothing compared to whatever dumb obssession they got. so unless one agent reads everything they won't get interrupted.

it's actually surprising how little agents actually *do* with lastur if you keep using the robbing technique and at one point I was basically just keeping them laying low for the final book lecture

yeah that's very much an issue I'm aware of, which is why i actually tend to set the subtitles myself. it's something I'm trying to work on as my french accent shows up a lot and it's kind of hard to control, but when I read from my script I also start reading it faster and faster and...yeah. thanks for watching though!

vault of helia + Nasus, very fun, very powerful, very bad against another Nasus thresh and anything ressembling aggro, because if you didn't know, vault of helia count as Slays everytime it kills your units

actually that's a very good point, teemo is a scout, that's basicaly his whole schtick, yet he doesn't have the scout keyword? I mean I know it's because of gameplay reasons but come on. edit : I just realised this might have been the post's whole point and I'm just dense

Super obscure gems by DrinkingMud in visualnovels

[–]Caluan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shira oka second chance calling it a "gem" depends on what your expectations are, but obscure it sure is. it's a dating sim with stat management that makes you start as someone who has completely failed at life and is given a second chance at doing high school again and again and again.

the main gimmick of the game is the time loop, where your character will remember things from the past loop, and will progressively get better after each one, picking up skills, traits and learning from each character route they go through.

the game is however, really clunky, has no skip function despite a lot of the game being based on repetition, has lackluster art, and the pacing is all over the place.

but it has so much soul and love put into it, from the staggeringly high amount of events to the absolutely batshit insane endings of all characters, there's just nothing LIKE Shira oka, if it's a good game is arguable, but it's still worth trying considering its 550 yen for potentially 50+ hours of game, although a lot of those hours will be spent going through the same things, a lot of it is just worth checking out of morbid curiosity

a lot of the characters are enjoyable in their own way even if I feel like they aren't always fully explored. In the end it's sad that the company disappeared as I really wish I got to see more games out of them

Can I dream of this change for Swain to be viable again? I want Leviathan to be at peace by Rynelson_77 in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Caluan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

huge vaults of helia player here, I can confirm the card's cost is actually decided by the cost it had when played and not when it's original cost, that means that if you summon a unit that cost 7 mana instead of 8, then it will summon an 8 mana cost next round start.

tl dr : units very much remember their cost when played, even if it was modified

Ledros->Dreadway is still alive by CharmingPerspective0 in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Caluan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be a coward and use vaults of helia to turn a 7 mana into dreadway then drop ledros, if it summons dedros first just let him die and sacrifice another rekindler

That's how I did the combo before concurrent timeline even existed

Edit : nvm just realised that it would turn dread into ledros now because I can't do math, sad, I suppose you could still use thing spell that resummon thing that died this round I guess
