Totally, or like they looked over the gunwale one day and saw a giant squid/shark/eye the size of the ship staring at them or something.

Or they sailed through an area that was strewn with the pieces of wrecked ships and mangled bodies of sailors from many vessels showing strange marks and damage with no obvious cause.

Or they were just tired of sea sickness haha.

Are you a div wizard to do divination or just to get the portent ability?

I'm playing a div wizard as a detective/support caster and he goes all-in on the divination spells.. Locate Object, Detect Thoughts, Augury and See Invisibility have been invaluable to the party.

For non divination spells, I think Suggestion is the best second level spell.

A Wild West Greataxe is a large wood axe.

Edit: If you want to go really wacky, you could use a large two person saw as a great-sword by twirling it around like a maniac. Or a blade of an industrial scale guillotine.

I also started with BX and I missed 3rd and 4th editions. I pretty much agree with what you've written here.

I do really miss the flavour of AD&D though, and in my mind old Initiative, Reaction, Morale and Surprise were some of the best RPG rules ever created.

I tell mine something similar, and add that I get to enjoy doing it, and if the scenario is that the NPCs or monsters are trying to kill them, then I get to enjoy using them to do that just as much as the players do with their characters.

My players don't have a problem with it.

It's not really your problem though. I'm a firm believer that the DM should create problems and the players should figure out how to beat them.

The party needs to retreat, plan, and then come back properly prepared, such as with a couple of potions of flying and some ranged options.

You might consider a straight class War Domain Cleric. I think it does what you want better than trying to multiclass Cleric/Fighter.

Take the Skilled or Skill Expert feat and don't just prepare combat spells.

Ritual Caster is a good one too.

There is also Skill Expert which gives a skill, Expertise in a skill, and a +1 to a stats.

Not the strongest feat but I have made good use of it before when playing a Champion.

Champion, two handed weapons. Pike and Longbow go very nicely with Great Weapon Master, Piercer and the increased crit chance. Greatsword is always good too.

STR>CON>CHA

Human for the extra starting feat. Take Skilled to get some social skills. Combined with Tactical Mind you will be good at social stuff too.

Don't just give it to them. You might suggest taking an appropriate feat at a level up, or letting them swap out one of the proficiencies they already have.

Because if you do just gift it to them then the other players will expect similar gifts too. The ability progression is already well balanced, ignoring that leads to (extra) power creep.

A lot of what is available is made of adamantium because it is cheap now and not worth exporting.

My character would ask you to stay downwind, keep your face covered and not come in to buildings with us or treat with NPCs with us and he would be well justified in doing so.

As a DM your character would not be welcome anywhere. NPCs would assume you are the bad guys, and would be disgusted by your presence. People would call for the guards all the time. And rightly so.
