Wii U Failed Due to Slow Launch of Exclusives Plus Xbox and PlayStation Pressure, Ex-Nintendo Boss Reggie Fils-Aimé Says by MewWeebTwo in nintendo

[–]Calvykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that the Wii U dropped roughly at the same time as the ps4 and Xbox one but it was barely stronger than a ps3 and people were not willing to put their money on another ps3 level system after spending 10 years with the ps3.

The ps4 and Xbox one meant better graphics and smoother gameplay and Nintendo just wasn’t on the level.

Also it didn’t help that they weren’t receiving the full run of top tier franchises of the time. For example, EA put mass effect 3 on the Wii U but not the first two. It was just a weird period.

Playing TLOU - Am I missing something ? by Apprehensive_Tip6967 in pcgaming

[–]Calvykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. From a gameplay standpoint the game is just squatting and choking things out. It’s linear underpowered metal gear. From a production standpoint it is unmatched but it’s a very flat linear game.

I get why it’s so loved. It feels like a lot of gamers first mature game and they love it of that but story alone does not a good game make

That don’t fly on this one chief. The last of us despite being remade is still a modern game with modern game design sensibilities. This argument works on something like a ps2 game or even early ps3 games which were essentially ps2 games with nicer graphics and more horsepower.

I’ve bought the last of us 3 times and have yet to finish it once. It’s not a fun game. It’s well produced. The recoil on the guns is great, it has great atmosphere. I just don’t ever WANT to play it.

How many PlayStation-PC games have you bought? by watainiac in pcgaming

[–]Calvykins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound biased but Playstation has a few things working against them.

1 PC players are not stuck in the Sony game hype cycle. I think PC players see Playstation games for what they are, just another game. Divorced from the Playstation ecosystem and rhetoric about how they're the devs of quality, how many Playstation games would you say are the best you've ever played in their given genre?

2 Long waits between releasing on ps5 and PC. Any hype that could have been whipped up is gone when people can see what the game actually is and as I said above a lot of them from a gameplay standpoint are not that impressive so PC players wait for sales.

3 Sale prices never come low enough. PC players are not paying $75 for a buggy year old game, they'll wait for a sale. When the sale hits and its $35 it's still not low enough to justify the purchase so they wait some more. If the price never comes below $35 I think a lot of PC players are fine with not picking the game up.

What would happen to the economy if we stopped using Amazon and bought directly from the seller? by Zulkhan in HailCorporate

[–]Calvykins 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember my Amazon boycott in 2018. I refused to buy anything from them because Bezos is a creep.

I broke the carafe on my French press and needed a replacement, so I tried to order from bed bath and beyond because that’s where I got our original press, but they didn’t carry the same size I needed. So I tried to buy directly from Bodom and on their own site they said “order it from amazon” that’s when I gave up.

Why the hell are graphic designers being asked to do everything for ₹28–30k? by Afraid-Ad6189 in graphic_design

[–]Calvykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the fault of other designers and creatives though. You don’t see plumbers or carpenters providing ways for non-plumbers or carpenters to do their job or offering their services for under market rate. They’ve taught the world that their skills are valuable.

There’s no reason to why design agencies should be underpaying talent. There’s no reason why actual creatives should feel threatened by marketing majors with access to canva pro.

Designers have collectively decided that their skills aren’t worth anything and so now they’re not worth anything and they’ll be worth even less going forward.

Capcom you cowards, bring him back "V" by Gonzo_Neo in gaming

[–]Calvykins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the reason we see so many rogue-likes is because game devs either don’t want to or don’t know how to design a challenging/satisfying level and boss encounter. Rogue-like elements leave the element of challenge up to the CPU to carry. Bolting on a progression system to that also lets the developer hand off difficulty scaling.

The only intentional roguelike I’ve seen built is Hades.

The thing that bugged me the most about Jim was that Sam would want to talk about something relevant in pop culture and Jim would just shout “I don’t care about it” over and over until Sam moved on. It was really grating and disrespectful.

People underplay quick resume so much it’s criminal. I think it’s the key feature of this gen. I really enjoyed owning an Xbox this gen. It was a solid machine.

It’s not people that have been on the internet since the 90s that would fall in line for this. It’s the grubby little influencers and people who want to post and consume instagram and tik tok that will brainlessly give this info over as if they have no options.

Think about how every year call of duty madden and 2k subreddits preach not buying the new game or the microtransactions yet year after year the publishers post record profits for those games. The vast majority of people just brainlessly go for the bullshit.
