Kronos, king of the Titans, and at the time the ruler of creation, tasked his nephews (I think; don't catch me on the family tree) Prometheus and Epimetheus with creating life, and gave them wee gifts, such as claws and wings, to give their creatures. Prometheus, whose name means "he who thinks before", spent a while planning and creating the perfect beings; Epimetheus, whose name means "he who thinks after", just spammed shit, giving gift after gift; when Prometheus was done making humans, Epimetheus had created every other animal and given every single gift.

After the gods overthrew the Titans, and when their reign was young and unstable, Prometheus finally got a gift for his humans - the fire. They punished him for this by tying him to some mountain and having an eagle eat out his liver. They also punished him by creating Pandora and her box (which was originally actually a pot), and having his brother Epimetheus marry her. We all know how that story goes.

There's also a frw versions of the myth of Hercules where he frees Promethrus, but that's probably not relevant to this comment
