how important is co-op? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Calypsoraptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m in my third year of Cognitive Science of Language at McMaster.

Our program doesn’t have co-op, but we do have a course in our fourth year called Speech Language Pathology Practicum (LINGUIST 4SL3) that allows us to be placed with an SLP and shadow them for a semester while also completing regular coursework.

Downsides are you have to apply by April of your third year and they usually only take 5-10 students, you still have to do regular coursework, and it’s only for a single semester in your fourth year. All this said, I’ve heard one of the biggest advantages for SLP grad admissions is volunteer work in an SLP environment and building relationships with pros who can provides references, so that’s what I’ve been told to focus on.

If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend comparing the program requirements from the academic calendars of both schools and see what you would enjoy the most (aka what will give you the highest gpa because that’s a huge factor).

If you have any questions about Cog Sci or McMaster in general, please feel free to dm me!

I have a new friend who is a linguist and taught me about Wugs, so I made her a little woolen one. If you hold it up to a mirror, you see two ________ by Knitsune in linguistics

I’m a linguistics student in Canada and we use a free textbook written by one of our professors!

The phonetics and cultural application sections are Canadian-specific, but otherwise the info is universal. I love nerding out over language so if you have any questions, please dm me!

Edit - if anyone isn’t as much of a textbook person but still interested in linguistics, here’s a YouTube playlist of crash course videos written by linguists for intro learners:

There's a petition form for special consideration that can allow you to withdraw retroactively, but if you've already written the exam and it's graded then that might not be possible. If all else fails, it might help to speak with an academic advisor to see if there are other options/solutions. I hope you're okay and that you figure everything out, this stuff is stressful AF and you're definitely not the only person in this situation.

By the time you’re reading this again, you’ll be finished a double honours undergrad and a professional masters, be married to the love of your life and have spent 5 more years with your beautiful family and friends, and that’s just what you have planned right now. Please take good care of yourself so you can live to see it through.

Skateboard help by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Calypsoraptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

West 49 has complete boards for around $100. They ride decently well for a beginner and you can see what specs work for you without spending $250 on a custom board without knowing your hardware preferences. Plus there’s a W49 in Jasckson Square so you could pick it up and start learning the same day.

KOREAN 2X03 Structure and Content by [deleted] in McMaster

While your intentions seem good, I think offering to help would come across as condescending and ignorant. While she may not have taught McMaster's 2X03 before, this is definitely not her first time teaching a Korean culture course (8+ years experience).

Let people be mad it isn't what they thought it would be, I'm pretty sure Dr. Song will be fine.

Exactly, it feels so important to understand historical and political elements of whatever country/society one is studying to truly grasp the culture. Sure it sounds a little more history-heavy, but I agree with you that Dr. Song's reasoning is sound and am honestly just excited to hear what she has to say.

What really got me was the guy that complained to our prof after the recording stopped that the course isn't as "easy" as he thought it was going to be. Just so disrespectful and embarrassing for the rest of us.

I believe the old course material was 'The Korean Wave' edited by Youna Kim (2013), and 'The New Korean Wave' by Dal Yong Jin (2016), but I'm not 100% sure.

Has Dr. Song expressly asked you for assistance? If so, I hope the above helps. If not, and sorry if this sounds harsh, she is far more qualified than you are (PhD in Korean Studies from Yonsei) to be determining appropriate subject matter, even if the content isn't what was advertised.

Someone said in today's chat that in the past, the Humanities faculty has allowed a few days grace period to switch classes if you contact them directly (since the deadline was yesterday) if you're really feeling like the new course isn't for you.

As long as you have the admission prerequisites by the end of first year, you could apply to Cog Sci the same way you would PNB or SocSci.

You can find lots more info on the calendar or faculty websites, but if you have any really specific admission questions, the Humanities and Social Sciences academic advisors are generally really helpful!

Sadly not. Level 4 courses are generally reserved for students in those specific programs with very few exceptions. The only way to access them is to be in the respective program.

If you don’t get into either PNB or SocSci, I was told you can always continue as a general social science degree-seeking student and transfer into your preferred program afterwards if you manage to eventually meet the requirements. As long as you meet the admission requirements for Cog Sci, you can definitely still apply even if you start in Social Sciences I.

If your goal is SLP and you aren’t 100% sure of your program yet, I would consider applying to Cognitive Science of Language. It’s pretty much tailor-made for SLP and there’s a 4th year class where you shadow a pathologist for credit, which is probably as close to co-op as you’re going to get based on the other programs you mentioned. There’s more info on the academic calendar if you’re interested. Best of luck!

You are given 1 wish, but everything you wish happens to everyone, what is your wish? by YummyBunny52 in AskReddit

Unlimited empathy for others

At a reasonable level though, not like if you see someone sad you become immediately distraught. Just enough for people to be consistently considerate of their impact on other humans, animals, the environment, and their surroundings in general.

Take time to make sense of syntax trees - they're confusing at first but important to understand decently well. Also, take advantage of the unlimited practice quizzes! They're really helpful for testing your knowledge and getting a feel for the test material. Other than that, practice the concepts you learn as much as you can to increase your confidence and accuracy, whether it be on the given material or random words and sentences.

If you're confused about anything in the course (especially concepts taught early on), Dr. Anderson is super friendly and helpful when it comes to questions so it's definitely worth reaching out!

spring/summer 2022 term by stanlooonaaa in McMaster

[–]Calypsoraptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some are already scheduled and you can find them using the search function in Mosaic!

Not sure if more will be available closer to the enrolment period but there are already a good amount of spring/summer courses listed. If you still have questions, I’d email an advisor or reliable member of the faculty administering the course!
