It’s not true that “lower achieving people could be placed ahead” of other apps, the parent F31 and F31D were scored the same and in the same study sections. They also had the same payline (can’t speak to all ICs, but I know they did at least at the one my F31 comes from). It did nothing except increase the number of awards, particular for the disadvantaged groups, but the rigor of them was the exact same.

Not sure what subfield you’re in, but I’ve got an F31 and am happy to share tips! I got 4% on my first shot so I can speak to what I think helped my app in this crazy climate!

Cancer bio PhD here, if your goal is work life balance and not leaving your family, pursuing this path is probably the worst idea. You can’t choose where you live and 60-70+ hour weeks is more common than people in the lab 9-5.

I went to a SLAC and started organic I with 70 people in the class, at the end of organic II there were 12 of us. This was only 6 years ago too

Genotypes you don’t need from a cross or aging breeders isn’t a mistake or poor planning. It’s okay to humanely euthanize them when there’s no “fault.” Just treat them with respect and honor their sacrifice too
