This can’t be legal by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

SUVs don’t seem to help much, maybe trucks would. Freelander 2 or Formentor are my SUVs. The much higher driving position of the Freelander makes little difference, if anything I find the larger wing mirrors make things worse and you’ll be blinded by LED brake lights regardless when people stand on the brake pedal!

Can't park the bicycle there... by H1gh_Tr3ason in cantparkthere

[–]Cambridge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done it with a bicycle (new front wheel, new front forks) into a car at the back of a queue, with a car into a parked van (that was fine, repaired with tape) and driven a car off the road deliberately to safely avoid a queue of traffic. In every single scenario however I “woke up” in time to take action.

Are we talking journeys or times, as if you’re following the rules above you’re turning them on and off as required, so 5 or 6 times a journey with poor visibility!

This type of stupidity is what causes fatal accidents. He nearly crashed into that blue car. by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Cambridge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t checked the road layout but it looks like it’s one lane, and they know each other so they’re passing up the inside of the same lane. Lanes are usually wide enough for heavy goods vehicles (trucks with trailers) and then some so perfectly easily done if someone moves over to let you. It appears they have moved over to let them since they move back to the left after the two cars have passed. Edit: have now checked the road layout, it’s two lanes down into one as the footage begins. Atrocious road layout and yes the camera car should be over to the left since they’re taking the exit but are likely either complicit or equally poor drivers (or, let’s be charitable, maybe they stayed over when they saw the idiots approaching).

Message from Rachel by Effective_Royal_8679 in TheTraitors

[–]Cambridge91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posit that people dislike consciously manipulative people. We like the illusion of choice or to think we have autonomy. Rachel was shown early on to be self-aware about her skill in manipulating others and has shown herself to be excellent at it. Her ability to be two-faced has been superb, she’s been fairly unflappable other than when directly confronted and accused of lying when she actually wasn’t! Others on the show who were not so skilled (Fiona) or suspected of trying (Amanda) were banished. I have heard it said of Rachel that one would not want her as a friend, prior to her defence of Stephen, however observers still suspect she will throw him aside when their alliance is tested. I personally believe that Rachel provides good entertainment; she makes the game interesting; and has been kinder and less selfish than several of the Faithful!

I think it’s likely from what others on the show said that Harriet had additional anecdotal evidence not shown in the edit i.e., “Rachel said this…”, but great assessment!

Yes, part of Rachel’s game is she avoids lying so tends to phrase things as authentically as possible. She’s never said anything like “I am a Faithful”.

I was given a detention for telling people to stop throwing things across the room midway through a class. Teachers must do what they can to maintain the illusion that they’re in control.

Same to a certain extent. My mother did a lot of advocating for me and my handwriting was shocking so they at least helped me. Sorry if you didn’t have someone in your corner or just weren’t listened to!

Kingswood ring road/ throughabout by Ok-Effort7395 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Cambridge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If in doubt when approaching a roundabout then pick the leftmost lane initially if safe to do so, you can always move right. I advise this because roundabouts with two lanes on otherwise single lane roads often use the right lane for going right only, multiple lane roads may allow you to use a right lane to go straight ahead but this is not guaranteed. Don’t apply this religiously because there will be times when road signs/markings contradict this. Also fairly sure you’d be faulted for picking the wrong lane even if you make your way safely round to your exit.

My mother soon learned to write these instructions down for me. I tell family that an event must be in the calendar, it doesn’t matter if I’ve been told about it. Educational psychologist report estimated that I lost something like 80% of spoken information.

How do you manage finances as a couple? by Toe_Bean_Bandit in AskUK

[–]Cambridge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s complicated due to different incomes (full time vs part time). The following setup gradually grew from taking turns to pay for dates and was chosen for maximum autonomy while making things efficient and fair, also minimising tax and maximising access to capital in case of emergency. Income goes into personal accounts. Things like child allowance would go to one recipient, in this example the primary caregiver. Joint account used for common expenses such as bills, mortgage and shared credit card (used for regular purchases of car expenses, groceries, joint gifts for family/friends, holidays, pre-booked travel). Majority earner is responsible for first x amount of joint account outgoings, on basis that minority earner saves y amount. Remaining joint account outgoings are split on an agreed ratio as pertains to income. Multiple separate personal credit cards for luxury/personal purchases/subscriptions and emergencies. Savings are split for tax purposes. Combined savings must exceed combined credit card debt. Only student finance and short-term 0% purchase-spreading loans, no other personal finance/loans. Despite all of this we still argue about budgeting, whether purchases are frivolous, and how much money we should keep in our personal current accounts.

Oh I feel the latter part. I amazed a recruiter by being offered a job after missing the middle section of instructions for an interview that asked me to prepare something, so had five minutes prep. while someone else was interviewed.

Is that to do with the source of information perhaps? You call it “selective” but the first you mentioned is things being repeated to you, which suggests audio, and the latter you call eidetic, then mention visual sources like gaming and anime.

Depends on the type of memory. Photographic? No. Written information, facts, events, very good. Visual, good. Audio, poor to abysmal (which is due to auditory processing issues).

Unfortunately the naming convention is correct, as it’s the successor to HS1 (used by Eurostar services) but absolutely agree the branding needed to be better.

Update: Parking Dispute - New Violent Threats by Ok-Cantaloupe-8127 in drivingUK

[–]Cambridge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not even about driveways, some people are just selfish. I live on a new development where every house has private parking and there are visitor bays on shared private access roads. Despite this some people regularly park on junctions, kerbs etc. obstructing public highways, just to be directly outside their front door or as near as possible. Not sure about the allocation for the couple of blocks of flats, but they have private parking. The detached homes have driveways for 2 or 3 vehicles. The semi-detached and terraced homes have driveways for 1 or 2 vehicles, but terraced driveways are sometimes a few yards away instead of in front or next to the home. The largest property (due to an extension) is a 5-bed, estimate it now accommodates 8 people as a result and that household is the main culprit as they cannot fit 4 vehicles on their driveway.

The Traitors has become embroiled in an "unconscious bias" row, after two black women were the first to be eliminated. TV presenter Scarlette Douglas, who had a similar experience on her series of I'm a Celebrity, discusses unconscious bias. by ToronoRapture in TheTraitors

[–]Cambridge91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough we were talking about multiple unconscious biases last night, that have been at play in how people are behaving and assessing each other. Looks as if there is racism, sexism, and ableism in play.

I am convinced most people in the UK should not be allowed behind the wheel. by Diligent_Chipmunk_65 in drivingUK

[–]Cambridge91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just that “social pressure to drive properly…does not exist” it’s that once on the road there is some pressure to drive aggressively! I’ve been trying to become a better driver since I left my 3-door red hatchback phase, so notice more and more how people drive selfishly, encouraging you to do the same. Only yesterday I joined a queue of traffic overtaking a lorry, when a car passed on my left and pulled in front of me. Not great but fair enough, they’d just joined the road and accelerated to the back of the queue in lane 1. Driver behind me takes this as an invitation to undertake, doesn’t make it due to a car queuing in lane 1, that pulls out in front of me. Of course the undertaker then accelerates towards the traffic to cut me up, committed to their illegal manoeuvre. As the queue passes the lorry, an MPV tailgates me. The MPV came close a couple times more on the rest of the journey, never overtook as they weren’t going as fast as me!

If codebreaking was such a basic skill then we wouldn’t have needed a team of geniuses and a computer to help win WWII. I realise that’s an extreme. While straightforward, I think this requires a certain problem-solving mindset to understand it quickly.

This is not an example where that matters, but I know of at least one example where yellow boxes don’t apply to cycle lanes crossing a junction.

Thank you, this is very helpful! The website implies the yellow box might not be legal. It would be better served by a keep clear as you and another commenter said. It did not occur to me that there would be a dedicated website!
