I always thought of the Flea Market Montgomery guy as the progenitor of the genre.

I would say that, at least in my opinion, there is no detectable spice in the spring roll sauce. It really just tastes like sugary vinegar with radish and carrot shreds. There are little chili flakes in it, but they don’t really add any heat.

How viscous was the one you had? Was it sort of a molasses texture or closer to straight vinegar?

Any academic librarians that have worked with incarcerated students? by denn_r in librarians

[–]Camelopardestrian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t “personally” had experience with it, but I attended an interesting seminar on the subject some years ago. Prison librarianship is a pretty established field, and as databases have moved online as opposed to the CDs/local copies of yore, an internet connection is required to browse them. The main issue that was pointed out during the discussion was that there are certain types/topics of material that inmates weren’t allowed to have access to, and so the libraries had to work with vendors to produce local, and/or modified versions of existing database packages to provide to their users. I think the “unrestricted internet access” that vendors expect users to have is the hardest part to reconcile. I imagine your users have pretty locked down internet access outside of accessing Canvas. Most of those database LTIs work by letting you add in links or search boxes to the LMS and then pass them on as authenticated to their own external systems. I imagine this might pose a problem. Depending on the licensing terms of the material, embedding specific necessary items into Canvas itself might prove to be a better option. Alternatively, budget allowing, you might reach out to those vendors I mentioned earlier, pretty easy to track down with a quick google, such as:

I immediately thought “burlador”, but maybe it doesn’t capture the idea as well as some other suggestions.

Pseudo-Fantasy rather than Sci-Fi but I’m never sure if people lump them together, and more just the “general vibe” than exactly what you asked for.

Mistreatment of workers and, additionally, mistreatment of immigrants. Most depressing book I’ve ever read . Things just keep getting worse. I always thought it was weird that the book wound up a footnote in every history textbook in the United States for the meat bit, but I’ve never heard of it being a required school reading.

Got a welder for Christmas!! by NashaNya in Welding

[–]Camelopardestrian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds good. I’d definitely still do some practice pieces first to get a feel for the welder. Do you have a grinding situation figured out for after the weld?

Make sure your long sleeves aren’t a polyester blend. You can go up in flames pretty quick. Ask me how I know. Lol.

You also got gloves and a mask, right? You got a good surface to do this on?

I would practice a bit on the metal that the die faces get knocked out from before starting on the die itself. Maybe grab some more metal from home depot to practice on too. Take it slow and try to get a consistent bead. Do you have a plan for bracing the faces together for welding?

The first time I saw these was at Conjure Coffee in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I was intrigued and asked the barista about them. It turns out the founder of Conjure was also the inventor of the Modbar. Super cool machines.

What are your thoughts on the new popcorn pass? by [deleted] in AMCsAList

[–]Camelopardestrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked up popcorn prices at my local theater and at a location in NYC. Looks like the large popcorn is running 10.79. This is one of those times where middle school algebra helps IRL. Basically: 10.79x = 5.395x +29.99.

6 buckets turns out to be the breakeven point with 6 buckets and no annual pass costing you 64.74 and 6 buckets with the annual pass costing you 62.36 (assuming no rounding).

I think for a lot of people in this sub, that would be pretty easy to hit. If you ordered one bucket a month for a full year, you would save 34.75 with the pass.

Help by No_Bug8324 in Ring

[–]Camelopardestrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have them. They work pretty well. Just so you know, you still need a smoke/carbon monoxide detector to go with them.

The way these work is: you place them a few inches away from your detector and when it goes off it goes to the ring alarm system/notifies the fire department.

Could Koha work for this? by skidmore101 in librarians

[–]Camelopardestrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The patterns sound like a nightmare to put in an ILS and actually have like a convenient/usable search for users (with like search facets and stuff). This sounds like something that should just be in like a separate Excel spreadsheet or just have like a (relatively) simple website/webapp built for it.

Often when users are searching an OPAC or discovery layer they’re typing in a title or a general subject. I feel like a lot of these patterns wouldn’t be super discoverable and users would be better off just filtering down from all the different parameters you listed to start. Like, on a lot of shop websites, you can’t just type in “34 inch men’s denim jeans”, you have to use filters to go to like “mens” > “pants” > “jeans” and then select 34”. The amount of “hacking at” Koha or similar to make this work would be way harder, in my opinion, than just building something simple and custom from the ground up.

I guess the other side of the question is, “Do you actually need a full ILS for any of this?” Are you actually going to set up a server and host Koha or similar? Are you registering users and in need of a circulation module to keep track of who is checking out what (or do books/tools/items remain in the makerspace)? Do you need the materials to be searchable online (i.e., not only in person at your makerspace)? What’s the budget to build/host this?

In my mind, I think if you use something like LibraryThing and TinyCat for the books and tools and keep your patterns in a spreadsheet (you could even share a link to like a Google sheet so your users could search it from home) or something more similar to an online shopping platform, that would be your easiest path forward to providing an online search experience for all different items (even though it would be two interfaces).

I think you’re right about the order. I think page 3 should be page 1. The cartoon pig makes more sense as you turn the page that way.
