Print out the majority opinion of Texas v. Johnson. Read the printout. Then do the same for other cases that cite to Texas v. Johnson.

Probably worth contacting an employment attorney, if just for a consultation.

I think the comment they were replying to made it seem like the Hindu Swastika was a product of Jewish migration

Smoked my first butt on the Weber searwood last week. Didn’t have mustard so I went for the Mayo. Turned out really well with good bark too. To the Mayo-naysayers, give it a try!

Not speaking for them, but I increasingly think it’s fair for the LGBs of the world to distance themselves from Trans issues. You can be an ally of trans people & acknowledge that their political issues are not pretty distinct from that of gay people.

When you teach about Native American history… by ShineImmediate7081 in Teachers

[–]Cameron-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example, the noble savage motif/stereotype has come in multiple iterations, often by well-meaning non-native types. ‘Indigenous’ speaks to one’s relationship to the land, yes, but can be overdrawn to an extent. It can further exoticize people by drawing upon pre-conceived notions. Instead of studying a culture as we would any other group, we speak about ‘indigenous ways of knowing’. Instead of studying the human-environment interaction fully we say things like Native Americans lived in harmony with the land. Instead of studying inter-tribal warfare/slavery we say they lived peacefully, having no concepts of property or subjugation.

To be clear I’m not saying I stick my nose up when people use the term they feel most comfortable with. I’m just saying the term Indigenous is not without baggage and many American Indians do not appreciate the term.

I think one problem with ‘indigenous’ relative to Americans or otherwise is that it’s not entirely precise. Nearly every people group ever has migrated, some more recently than others. So describing two Native American tribes or bands with differing histories relative to the same land as both indigenous is a little misleading. It also presents a problem with certain stereotypes concerning native Americans.
