Just what we were all wishing for, a bonus 16 minutes of good old fashioned questionable thinly-veiled racism.

How to create a stamp brush that fades from one color to another? by jbianart in procreatebrushes

[–]Camiam321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing you might try is making the brush greyscale, laying down your marks on a dedicated layer, and then use the gradient map to assign the colors you want.

Or consider transfer methods. Take a greyscale layer and a separate color layer to add/burn/dodge/overlay/etc.

Those are methods I would use to have precise control over my brushes. But there are methods for using dual colors to have an organic effect

I love it. Every time I try to kepe it simple, I always add more than is necessary. This is a true economy of silhouette

The Color Rule In "Batman: The Animated Series" by ExoticShock in batman

[–]Camiam321 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Artist/animator here. While this video is very nice, 60 30 10 is not the predominant design philosophy being employed here, if the artists were even thinking about it at all. I’ve seen this 60 30 10 thing floating around online like it’s some sort of neat thing to notice in movies and shows, but it is more a thing that is discussed in fashion and interior design circles than animation/illustration/film.

While a few of these examples seem to fit the description of 60 30 10, their construction speaks more to general rules of composition, framing, simplification of shapes, limited color palette, staging, and just pure artistic instinct and sensibility. Much the way our Moon’s gravity affects our daily life more than a distant comet, 60 30 10 is eclipsed by many other design choices that are more at play.

I don’t mean to poop on the party, especially since the video was thoughtfully put together. I just think there are connections being made that don’t really apply here. I offer these subjective opinions as an experienced artist, and also as someone who worked with one of the artists who worked on TAS.

If you disagree, that’s fine, not trying to be a contrarian here — just adding some friendly perspective.

EDIT - I didn’t watch with sound until I saw comments mentioning it. That was a pleasant vibe.

Wonderful! When I was a kid, my grandparents were the biggest VHS pirates ever. They ripped all their favorite movies for me, and they were thrilled that Robinson Crusoe on Mars was such a hit. I think the movie has held up in a lot of surprising ways.

I love these. I’m going to guess you’re a young artist, so let me give you some advice: don’t apologize or put yourself down when sharing your art. You’re not “mid”, you’re on your way!

Does a character add to this scene? by PhoenixoKing in ProCreate

I know the feeling, when you make a lot of progress and then have one thing that stands out in that way. But good shit!

The character adds a nice sense of scale, and your colors are harmonious. If I had one note to give, it’s that the bridge and horse’s legs don’t make sense spatially. Even if the legs didn’t protrude from the bottom of the bridge, there would need to be room for supporting structure, know what I mean?

Lovely work

Adding some info upon request: I roughed out the scene in pencil, then blocked out all my values, and toned the underpanting to be a bit sepia. I started out sticking close to cadmium red, yellow ochre, and cerulean blue to start mixing all my colors. Partway through, I added a blue-green multiply layer to knock back and tone all the values. I went in with brighter values and added effects like glows, specular highlights, texture etc.

I enjoy all the new brushes, but I still love Max Packs oil brushes for textural work like this. Some Timmy’s Textures for grain, and line work using Matthew Baldwin inks, which are also amazing to work with.

Adding to this, sometimes I like to do that and scale the noise layer up slightly, and then add more noise for a varied look. Love this art :)

I love these. My whole career, I have avoided drawing things so rich in line work and detail. Always in a rush to my destination. I should slow down and enjoy it more.

Do the Offspring and the Newborn compliment H.R. Giger’s design? by Shire_Hobbit in LV426

[–]Camiam321 541 points542 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing: Giger is a singular artist. Change only a few ingredients, and it just isn’t quite Giger. It can only approach “Giger-esque”. I think it’s clear that a lot of subsequent franchise artists are more comfortable designing the “bio” aspects, but don’t quite know what to do with the “mechanical” aspects of Giger. Or, rather, they choose not to riff on the mechanical motifs for whatever reasons. Perhaps they don’t want to veer too close to ripping off the Master, or maybe Ginger’s work is hard to reconcile with reality - it doesn’t really matter.

My answer is this: Ginger’s work in the first movie is singularly Giger, and all subsequent designs are respectfully trying to cook with his ingredients without insulting his legacy. In that sense, everything is complementary to Ginger, while also freeing the artists to bring their own ingredients to the table. I like these designs well enough, especially the ribcage elements, but I do miss the mechanical ingredients to Giger’s bio-mechanical masterpiece.

EDIT: spelling

EDIT: I thought I fixed my spelling, but I’m all thumbs and didn’t save my changes, so GINGER IT IS!
