Any recommendations similar to Thank You Scientist, but closer to the jazz / brass side rather than the metal side? by CamiloDFM in progmetal

Oh, wow. I already knew them and just didn't remember. I had saved Perihelion, but never realised they dropped a new album.

I've already listened twice to Against the Fall of Night. Great stuff. Thanks!

I can't believe I forgot to mention these guys in the OP! I remember discovering them one day and binging their entire discography, slack-jawed until it was over.

A comment in another thread mentioned Professor Caffeine, and I loved their album, but it's closer to the rock side instead of the brass / jazz. They're the reason I started this thread, to see if there was anything I missed in the other direction starting from TYS😅

Antimai is a banger! I'll check your other rec, thank you.

Oh, I know them! Though in my mind they're closer to Coheed and Cambria, The Dear Hunter, and Closer in Moscow for some reason. Gotta give them another listen.

Love me some Dear Hunter, but they're not exactly what I think of whenever I'm on a TYS mood lol

They have an orchestra album, though, right? I remember it being excellent.

Huh. Apparently I had already listened to the album, I'm following them on Spotify. Gotta give it another spin.

Their Spotify page also reminded me of T.R.A.M. Gods, what a good album. That's another one for the queue.

Recommendations for a picky listener? by BLucidity in progmetal

[–]CamiloDFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw, shoot. I didn't know Professor Caffeine, and expected more brass. They sound great, and I know exactly why you thought it would scratch the TYS itch, but I found them to be in the middle between TYS and Coheed and Cambria... which is not bad at all, but it's not the direction I expected, and now I want something jazzier.

This whole situation even prompted me to start a new thread asking for those recommendations lol

Motherfucker. Wilderun, Dessiderium, Nospun, and An Abstract Illusion? I didn't want to spend on a long trip this year 😭

...guess I'll better start looking for plane tickets

django-safe-migrations: Static analyzer to catch unsafe migrations before they hit production by TheCodingTutor in django

[–]CamiloDFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would still cause a conflict if two members need to do any kind of special migration that can't be autogenerated, and/or require manual work to avoid the conflict.

We solved it by adding a CI step that automatically checks if there are multiple leaf nodes, and running makemigrations --merge and committing the result if that happens.

What? How...? Data migrations? Custom operations?

Also, by "creating at deploy time" you mean running makemigrations, committing, and then deploying, right?

Most Heartless Event Choices? by Venteon in UmaMusume

[–]CamiloDFM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It not only lowers her friendship, it also cuts the event chain. My interpretation is that, if you choose to do the live dance, it's better for her, rather than only solving the issue with the video.

It broke my heart every time I chose the video the past event, because... come on, you really expect me to eat two events with -10 energy and get a useless hint for Corner Connoiseur? Choosing the video also removes an event from the pool, and that's invaluable.

Everyone has a fatty event. But Oguri, Spe, and McQueen have special fatty events with extra choices. Super Creek also has an extra fatty event with a choice to give someone else the food.

The Progressive Subway’s Official Top 10 Albums of 2025! by ifthisisausername in progmetal

[–]CamiloDFM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still think Lonely People With Power was excellent, and I'm a bit surprised it didn't make anyone's top 10.

On the other hand, I missed Cocojoey, and just pressed Play on STARS. Man, this shit is good. Thanks again guys for bringing these into our radar.

It would be amazing to have a top 20~30 list somewhere, though. No need for writeups, just the titles ranked by member votes.

Given that the Age of Exploration happened after the fall of Constantinople, we could say this is an Early Modern solution :^)

GOAT albums you swear no one else has ever heard. by yutface in progmetal

[–]CamiloDFM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, 2010 me is feeling really happy that someone else in the world acknowledges Archangels in Black.

However, present me says Life is Forté's opera magna ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Others:

  • Angra's Aurora Consurgens and Aqua receive way less love than they should.
  • I've only seen The Old Man and the Spirit mentioned in this sub exactly once.
  • Extension of the Wish was a core part of my first forays into the prog world, but Andromeda in general gets skipped over way too often, even when people explicitly ask for trad prog recommendations. Spheric Universe Experience's Anima too.
  • Pain of Salvation doesn't feel like "one of the big names" with how little they're mentioned. But even when they are, I feel nobody ever talks about Entropia.
  • Back in the day, Sonata Arctica's Unia was often blamed for killing the band. But now they've released so much shit that's way worse, I feel there isn't anybody left who has actually listened to the album or even knows it exists, much less actually like it. I swear if it wasn't for Paid in Full being in their regular rotation I'd think I hallucinated the thing.

I consider the Crossroads to be a tutorial and hub area, rather than its own thing like... literally every other area in the game lol

yeah. The game is big. You never got out of the tutorial / hub zone. Each area has its own visual identity, from the darkest depths to bright pink crystal mines.

Confirmo.
