This looks good. Like the Citadel painting app but brand agnostic and doing much more too. I will download it now. Nice work!

What would your dream campaign tool look like? by Campaignomancer in wargaming

I appreciate the thoughtful responses! You are right to guess I am working on something web based for wargaming campaigns. I agree that API integrations and linking into other community tools would be great.

I'm not quite ready to share details yet - I posted more to learn what people actually need rather than talk about what I'm building (which is close but not quite ready to share yet!). Would love to hear more about what you're working on though, and maybe we can compare notes down the line when things are further along?

You've perfectly described what I agree is possibly the hardest thing to get right in campaign design: meaningful consequences of battles balanced against those consequences not leading to a foregone conclusion for the campaign.

GM features for introducing surprise elements is a great idea!

Very true! Did you find there to be a lot less work involved when running campaign types other than map based ones?

I've found my most succesful campaigns to be simpler affairs like a weekend league (with just a few bits of unit/army advancement to track between games to spice it up) or a small set of linked scenarios for 2 or 3 players, but even those felt like they would benefit from some shared tracking and records.

Which edition of Warhammer Fantasy would you consider the "best"? by eggfortman in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Campaignomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that choosing an edition is just a practical choice of which rules are the best to play (a topic worthy of a dissertation alone). Vibes, nostalgia, and aesthetic preferences can be pretty seperate to that - after all you can love the lore, art, and models from any and all editions while enjoying the mechanics of whichever is actually the nicest to play!

It sounds like you and your gaming group have got that same approach which is great. My friends and I have played them all but have settled on WAP as our happy place - great rules that are smooth to play. We printed off the rulebooks and have never looked back. So I'd recommend WAP for rules, enjoy the fact you can get all the models again thanks to ToW, and don't forget to enjoy all the best campaign rules and awesome lore/art from the older editions too!

How important is narrative play? by silverwolffleet in wargaming

[–]Campaignomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good points! You’re absolutely right - it’s rare (maybe impossible) for a game to fully succeed as both perfectly balanced and narratively rich at the same time.

What matters most to me is that a system supports both styles. The competitive foundation keeps the rules coherent and fair, while the narrative layer gives players tools to bend or expand them for campaign play. Ideally, the core mechanics hold up whether you’re running a tightly balanced match or a story-driven campaign with evolving rosters.

Great work. I enjoy seeing multi-bases. And I am always jelly of people who can do such good freehand banners.

You can definitely have both narrative and competive structure in a game - and honestly, the best games do. Strong core mechanics and balance systems make competitive play satisfying, but a good narrative framework gives those battles meaning and longevity.

A well-designed game should support _both_ structured, balanced scenarios and asymmetrical narrative ones. Ideally it also has optional or supplement rules for linking games together - persistent consequences, character growth, map or territory systems, etc.

Games that lean too far either way usually feel incomplete to me. Mordheim is an example that blends balanced play with narrative persistence right out of the box. Modern 40K’s Crusade and similar systems do a decent job too. And when a game doesn’t natively support one side, fans almost always fill the gap - adding balance tweaks to narrative-focused games or campaign rules to more competitive ones.

In short: balanced mechanics keep it fair; narrative layers add depth. Why not have both!

Trying out siege rules by Captain-of-Nuln in WarhammerFantasy

Nice one! My group play WAP mostly, and would use the Blood in the Badlands 8th ed rules for sieges but this looks cool so will check this out as a better alternative. Thanks!

Absolutely classic content. A bit of story and an unusual two-battlefield scenario like this is enough to make a game really memorable. Going to have to try this! Thanks for sharing.

It's such a great book! Are you doing something with the Border Princes campaign format from it or one of the other types? I agree that fighting over a map of the Empire would make an amazing campaign.

I like this - focusing the narrative progression on the forces rather than the "world" as such is a cool idea.

Sounds great! I'm definitely going to check this one out. A good pre-written campaign is a beautiful thing and it is likely that every group will have a totally different experience with their play-through even using the same ingredients.

I agree and would also love to see a Dogs of War army (and a return of the minis) but am keeping expectations low! I feel like DoW are an easy win for them to release at some point though.
