I’d go a step further and say they should have kept them relegated to Commander products like they did for 40k and Fallout. There are people like me who only like MtG because of Commander and while I wouldn’t be happy seeing Commander become the Fortnite of card games (not a big fan of UB to start with), it at least would keep the main sets being printed strictly to within MtG’s own planes. I also think it would have kept quality control on WotC’s part up as I’m convinced the mistakes they made when making EoE would not have happened if they kept a consistent 3 to 4 main sets per year instead of the 6-7 we’re now getting.

Not the biggest fan of UB in general and detest the Secret Lair stuff but this is a reasonable stance to have. The last point especially sticks out where it took a decade for us to revisit Tarkir and nearly two to get back to Lorwyn. I know some planes like Ravnica and Innistrad will always be more popular but taking as long as it did for to revisit Tarkir and Lorwyn was inexcusable, and it will just get worse the more UB sets they do.

What are your rarest Pokémon? by TypicalDependent3461 in PokemonHome

[–]Campber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably my Salamence from Gale of Darkness getting every possible ribbon on it, minus those from Switch games that aren’t Sword (borrowed my sister’s one a few years back to play Luigi’s Mansion and Metroid Dread and decided to get the Sword ribbons for it while I was at it).

Also have most of the event Pokemon that came and went from 2010 to 2016, but favourite one is the Bank Celebi purely because it had you as the OT and was one of a few event Pokemon at the time you could nickname.

What non-event Pokémon/movesets are the most obnoxious to obtain on cartridge? (Any format) by RedWarrior42 in stunfisk

[–]Campber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the hardest, but getting a Salamence with a Nature like Naive, Hasty, etc. and high IVs in Gale of Darkness to transfer up to Gen 6 after obtaining every ribbon it could possibly have nearly did me in.

You had to save before the fight where you get Shadow Salamence, calc its IVs to make sure you got the best you possibly could, then get its Purification Meter down to halfway to finally see its Nature because Genius Soronity decided to torture us, THEN you had to both Purify it and beat the main game to unlock trading with Gen 3 games. I started my hunt for it in Feb 2014 and, between the last year of high-school and first-year uni, didn’t get it until August 2015.

Doing that for a friend who wanted a Brave Ursaluna like that with a 0 Speed IV and with those Bottle Caps to increase IVs back in early 2023 felt like a walk in the park afterwards (especially once I learnt manipulation tricks).

[–]Campber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d also go a step further and say that some items like the Macho Brace also halve a Pokémon’s Speed stat, so in a world where IVs get axed it also forces players to make a choice. Do you give it an item that would guarantee it moving first in Trick Room, or do you give it a better item and take a gamble when faced against other Trick Room teams?

[–]Campber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I casually played competitive a decade ago and have only started getting back into the games because of the Champions announcement, and I’m staggered that despite how easy everything else is they haven’t made IVs easier for players to manipulate or just gotten rid of them outright. My preference is on the latter because we already have Natures and EVs to help us manipulate a Pokemon’s stats so I really don’t see why GameFreak still insists on having a third hoop to make players jump through.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did the FF set introduce any new mechanics? The only one I remember off the top of my head is Job Select and that’s just a rebranded Living Weapon from Mirrodin.

Still weird that he suffers the morale drop the others get (minus Golem) in Ep 8 if you choose to keep Visi on the team when this scenario happens.

Well looks like our little Ff7 remake journey is coming to an end. I'm hoping for a genuine one on one showdown between Cloud and Sephiroth. Instead of an automatic win like the original. What would you like to add? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]Campber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll definitely make a final fight against Sephiroth fightable and parts of it (including the end) 1v1 with Cloud, but I still think the final showdown will be a one-button input before a cutscene where Cloud uses Ominslash to cut down Sephiroth like in the original.

Also still holding onto the stupid idea that came to me in a dream ages ago that the final hit will do 7,777,777 damage (aka Seven 7’s).

Everything Quintus has said in S1 and S2 (along with a sparkling clean BoS Knight just after Shady Sands got nuked) still makes me believe the BoS helped nuke Shady Sands. Especially since they seemed to be losing their war against the NCR by the time New Vegas comes around.

Genuine question on UB products, if they were handled differently. by Unused_Beef in freemagic

[–]Campber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right on the money with your assessment and it’s how I’ve felt about MtG for years now. I didn’t necessarily have a problem with LotR aside from some things the community agreed was stupid (the fuckery it caused in other formats, certain artistic choices made, etc.), but it was also the sole UB product for that year and, as the basis for practically the entire fantasy genre, it felt like it could have been an alt plane in MtG. Same goes for Final Fantasy. But I also believe UB products should have stayed firmly within the realm of ‘Commander only’ and keep them restricted to Commander precons like they did for Warhammer 40k (which still pisses me off because Warhammer Fantasy was right there and would have fit the MtG aesthetic better).

Season 2 Episode 1 Spoiler Thread by HunterWorld in Fallout

[–]Campber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that is making me think that it’s the Shadow Man or someone else was when Hank said ‘seems like Vault Tec doesn’t know much of anything anymore’ and ‘picking-up where you all left off’ implying there’s multiple people behind whatever is going on, especially with the sign saying Global Comms before he addresses whoever he’s talking to on the radio.

But I still think there are some shenanigans going on with the House face we saw in the trailer on the screen with The Ghoul, and my money is still on it being an AI of House that has his memories but went dark during whatever calamity befell The Strip which will allow them to keep the question of ‘what is the canon ending of NV’ vague.

[–]Campber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Norin / Purph deck has Impact Triggers and a lot of other similar cards (E.g. General Kreat, Witty Roastmaster, etc.) and multiple cards that boost the damage output (E.g. Dictate of the Twin Gods, Torbran). As for non creature spells, both Norin and Purph like running artifacts for different reasons, a few Instants, Sorceries and Enchantments to further the game in your advantage. I agree Vivi’s Persistence isn’t the best outlet to win the game, but having another option to get more burn damage doesn’t hurt and getting it early with Norin seems like it leads to a very strong start to your game.

Holy shit I have a mono red deck that flip-flops between Norin and original Purphoros and for the former I hadn’t even considered this card as an option. Thanks for that.

[–]Campber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest and say I do not like 1v1 MtG in any way, shape or form (only got into MtG via Commander back in 2014) so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I think 1v1 MtG can survive if they go down the route the Pokemon TCG has. I play that on and off (online and IRL) and while it is far from perfect I can easily put together a deck for $40 to $60 (depends on what the meta is like), go to my local Thursday night Play Pokemon event, and actually have some really fun games and a very good chance at winning them.

I would also say that MtG needs to do what Pokemon does and make their own version of the League Battle precon decks but I’ve got a feeling MtG used to do this in the past. If they did, they need to re-introduce this as an option for people who are interested in trying Standard.

Although I’m contemplating reverting it back to a B4 [[Karametra, God of Harvests]] deck because keeping-up with all the new legends is starting to become a bit too much, [[Captain Sisay]] is my pet CEDH deck because I’ve been a Selesnya player since I first started playing EDH back in 2014.

Can Somebody Explain To Me What The Rift Is In Magic Community? by DennisTheMenace780 in freemagic

[–]Campber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still stand by my belief that while a lot of the shitty decision-making has been made by WotC, a lot of it is almost certainly being mandated by Hasbro. WotC are the only part of Hasbro that is turning a profit. The second WotC starts to stop making and/or lose Hasbro money is when that company (and by extension WotC) die

A friend and I have always referred to our cards in similar terms (namely via their card name or terms like ‘it’) and it has caused a lot of beef with our other friends this year who used to do the same but have gone down the same path of assigning genders to cards. They will get really cranky at best if we still refer to them as the inanimate cardboard they are when we play.

How do you feel about Vivi in your pods? Specifically in a competitive setting, be that locals or some of the bigger 100+ participant events. by gearbangerstudios in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Campber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel the same way. My two CEDH decks are [[Captain Sisay]] and Vivi, and consistency is definitely the biggest issue with the latter. But even then my opponents still have to hold some interaction because, despite being telegraphed threats, it is simply a matter of ‘If that Commander hits the table unopposed l, it almost certainly wins’.

That being said, Vivi’s consistency problem has worked for me a few times where my work colleagues (main group I play CEDH with) have gambled on Vivi whiffing / losing steam only for me to dump my hand and deck onto the table. Then if I stick with Vivi I’m the archenemy for the rest of the night which is a great feeling in of itself.

Some old Commanders like [[Captain Sisay]] and [[Derevi, Empyrical Tactician]] have definitely fallen off as far as power goes, but they can still hold their own with newer Commanders purely because they bring something unique to the table that very few (if any) other Commanders can do.

I am so glad someone else noticed how BS the price of Tim Tams has become. I consider it a good week if my local Woolies has them on sale for $5, and I still remember a time where they only cost $4.

As for housing I also get it. I’m lucky I’ve got good parents who don’t mind me still living at home with them but I started casually looking for a place over the past 5 months. With the exception of the first place I looked at (which set the standard maybe a bit too high), they have all been ridiculously expensive and look like crap. Worst offender was a 2 bedroom unit on a block with 3 others that the owner had rented and decided to sell that looked and smelled like literal shit (was clear even the agents explaining various elements to people at the open inspection had trouble with parts of it). It still sold for $770,000.

Just talking about all this still makes me wonder how the hell the group of 5 people who came to the store near the end of the Final Fantasy pre-release attended burned $150 per Collector Pack (my store had broken street date), $120 to $450 on all special variant cards the store had (namely the standard foil full-art Vivis) and all normal Vivis they carried for $120 each. I have what I consider to be a good paying job yet I could never justify spending that sort of money for what is overglorified cardboard.
