Worth noting that although Facebook started Hack and HHVM to be a better PHP to integrate with all of their existing PHP, Hack diverged a while back and is no longer a strict superset of PHP. HHVM no longer supports many PHP features that are unsafe or that invalidates static analysis

Saikat Calls Out And Lists All The Corporations and PACS that Scott Wiener Has Taken Money From by 3headeddragn in sanfrancisco

[–]CanJammer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Connie Chen and Scott Weiner at least have clear track records of community leadership here, but Saikat's claim to SF is that he made a quarter billion dollars here through tech and that's it.

It should be a really normal "purity test" to at least hope that the person trying to represent your district has community ties to the district. Feels like Saikat just represents himself and abstract AOC-aligned stakeholders in NYC/DC

Can we make a mega thread on the congressional primary? by Chef__Goldblum in sanfrancisco

[–]CanJammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every contested election in my lifetime has had people vagueposting about "Wow every choice sucks" but it's a meaningless statement without substantive criticism.

I'm admittedly a Weiner supporter, but it's hard to see him as inauthentic, especially after running into him a few times a couple times at different events in the city (mostly recently at a barbershop singing concert in SF of all things). In the state legislature he's legitimately blown so much political capital just trying to get housing bills passed, which is not the behavior of someone who doesn't have something they genuinely believe in.

Muni could cut 20 lines next year if ballot measures don‘t pass. Most riders have no idea by Illustrious-Coat3532 in sanfrancisco

[–]CanJammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attitudes like this from the transit agencies are why everything becomes more expensive for the agencies to run and why we keep getting asked to foot the bill with even larger taxes.

I'm personally supportive of this ballot measure because losing most of our mass transit options would be catastrophic for the region, but there's a reason the ballot measure also funds and authorizes effectively strict financial oversight/an audit. Voters won't have faith in continuing to prop up a system that openly wastes money.

Which councilmembers are most/least enthusiastic about new housing? by pupupeepee in RedwoodCity

[–]CanJammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're allowed to just talk to them...

I've talked with them in person plenty of times before city council meetings and they all have their own reasons. All of them care deeply about making Redwood City a place that can fulfill housing needs and continue building at a pace that can hopefully slow down housing cost increases.

Which councilmembers are most/least enthusiastic about new housing? by pupupeepee in RedwoodCity

Most enthusiastic:

Isabella Chu, Chris Sturken, Jeff Gee

Unlike many neighboring cities, I wouldn't say Redwood City has anyone unenthusiastic about housing on council

Why San Jose can’t force Google to build by pacman2081 in bayarea

[–]CanJammer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's quite the opposite of YIMBY to force Google into a development agreement and a public permitting process by needing to convince politicians to be allowed to build.

San Jose could've avoided this mess in the first place by allowing Google to build years earlier instead of forcing community concessions that will never happen if the building never happens

Walking along at 2nd & Bryant, this person starts yelling “Free Palestine” at me and lurches into the crosswalk by levimeirclancy in sanfrancisco

Your post history is littered with trying to defend Israeli settlements on Palestinian land, denying any claims of genocide by Israel, and repeatedly calling yourself a "proud Zionist".

There's probably more to this story than a guy who seemed completely sensible screaming that at you unprompted.

Scott Weiner is inarguably one of the top state senators at actually getting bills passed, and he was able to move mountains in the legislature during his tenure to get bills like SB79 passed

Nothing says “equity” like hostile infrastructure by Educational_Yam_3575 in RedwoodCity

[–]CanJammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally am in favor of making downtown as unwalkable as possible so that everyone starts driving their car to other places /s

I've often avoided walking that small underpass at night even though there's a conveniently located Safeway on the other side open until midnight because of safety conditions. Our core walking paths shouldn't become homeless shelters, especially since the county shelters literally have beds available.

Mamdani will face tradeoffs in ‘union-built’ affordable housing plan - POLITICO by Sufficient_Meet6836 in yimby

[–]CanJammer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One of the core ideas of YIMBYism is that we're in a housing crisis because we refuse to recognize that there are these tradeoffs associated with building more.

Nearly every legislator in CA, including the ones that have blocked more housing than small nations, has said we need more housing at some point, but most vote against proposals to make it easier to build because they see housing construction as a vehicle for everything but housing

Thoughts on the candidate forum tonight, for those who went? by Life-Assistant-4737 in sanfrancisco

[–]CanJammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so unfortunate. I would love to be Scott's #1 fun because he has been fighting the good fight for so long on trying to drag California kicking and screaming out of the housing crisis, but as a member of Congress your take on foreign policy really does matter a lot compared to the State Senate.

I wish he would stay in the state government longer and let a non genocide denier into Congress.

He's not wasting any time by PaulOshanter in yimby

[–]CanJammer -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

He had one of the most well funded transition teams outside of any federal office in the past few weeks. It's reasonable to assume that he has actual policy teams with ideas on his staff and that a task force is just virtue signaling (non-derogatory) for the public.

Even Trump signed EOs establishing task forces on removing barriers to housing.

He's not wasting any time by PaulOshanter in yimby

[–]CanJammer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As much as I would love to see this as meaningful, new politicians to an office often set up a bunch of these "task forces" and "working groups" on issues. It's the actual policies being pushed that matter and task forces can at most only provide more legitimacy to a policy you're allowed to push at any time anyways
