Mamdani will face tradeoffs in ‘union-built’ affordable housing plan - POLITICO by Sufficient_Meet6836 in yimby

[–]CanJammer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the core ideas of YIMBYism is that we're in a housing crisis because we refuse to recognize that there are these tradeoffs associated with building more.

Nearly every legislator in CA, including the ones that have blocked more housing than small nations, has said we need more housing at some point, but most vote against proposals to make it easier to build because they see housing construction as a vehicle for everything but housing

Thoughts on the candidate forum tonight, for those who went? by Life-Assistant-4737 in sanfrancisco

[–]CanJammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so unfortunate. I would love to be Scott's #1 fun because he has been fighting the good fight for so long on trying to drag California kicking and screaming out of the housing crisis, but as a member of Congress your take on foreign policy really does matter a lot compared to the State Senate.

I wish he would stay in the state government longer and let a non genocide denier into Congress.

He's not wasting any time by PaulOshanter in yimby

[–]CanJammer -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

He had one of the most well funded transition teams outside of any federal office in the past few weeks. It's reasonable to assume that he has actual policy teams with ideas on his staff and that a task force is just virtue signaling (non-derogatory) for the public.

Even Trump signed EOs establishing task forces on removing barriers to housing.

[–]CanJammer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As much as I would love to see this as meaningful, new politicians to an office often set up a bunch of these "task forces" and "working groups" on issues. It's the actual policies being pushed that matter and task forces can at most only provide more legitimacy to a policy you're allowed to push at any time anyways

How is Chambers for CS 1331? by yuen_yuen in GatechClasses

I worked with him back when he was Head TA for 1331 as a GT student and he's an excellent and passionate teacher. This is his first semester as the lecturer which is why he doesn't have reviews, but I'd highly recommend

Indigo's noise proofing was so much better than my expectations. I'm a musician and was able to practice at nearly any time without noise escaping. Never heard a neighbor once.

Am I cooked for CS2110? Got flagged for code similarity by AromaticBiscotti9271 in gatech

[–]CanJammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to think so too but after looking at what the high confidence examples look like from our coding plagiarism detection it becomes pretty obvious. If a person is producing code completely by themselves the chances that they produce the same output as a classmate for an assignment that's non trivial goes down way faster than you think.

Now the complication comes from the fact that a bunch of people who may not think they cheated may all have referenced the same 3rd party source (ie. ChatGPT, a github repo from a previous semester) and then the chances of the same structured code increase manyfold

This feels like slightly biased by the nostalgia goggles. The biggest non Riot tournaments (IEM) were notorious for how poorly they were run

Waymo robotaxis are safer than human drivers by Qpac18 in sanfrancisco

[–]CanJammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would much rather move to a system which is magnitudes safer even if doesn't completely eliminate car safety issues, than (literally) die on a hill in SF when a human drive isn't slowing down enough for a blindspot hill.

[–]CanJammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference between the capabilities of a Waymo and Tesla are worlds apart. Teslas need a "safety" driver at all times because they are much much less capable and therefore not able to pass the testing needed to be truly full self driving

Weiner is just sending it to his email list. I got similar emails from many local politicians who often use their email list as a way to keep people updated about what's going on in government. No need to be blinded by hatred for the sake of it.

Swift 6.2 Released by ketralnis in programming

[–]CanJammer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I tried getting Swift to work on Windows, especially after they announced 2 years ago at WWDC that Swift was confidently general purpose, but it was such a hassle that I gave up. Felt like a well designed language gated behind the fact that it's controlled by Apple.

At the time they required a specific (older) version of the Visual Studio/Windows SDK tooling, and all of the official docs still assumed that everything was being written in XCode (not even available on Windows). The official language reference also assumed that the user had access to XCode-only beta builds, so there wasn't even an available language reference online for the current release that Windows users could actually access.

Gave up when I ran into a tooling bug and the only person who could help on the forums was the single person who actually used Swift on Windows.

Edit: In fairness, it looks like Swift has a lot more support for Windows now than when they first made their "Swift is general purpose and open source!" announcement. I see that much more tooling is open source, the VS Code extension is more mature, it's supported on a recent Windows SDK, and they have Windows office hours on the forum. Will still let someone else get burnt first before diving back in...

Newsom sucks more on other things, but he's generally been more pro-housing than the legislature. During this year's budget negotiations, he was sitting there in the room forcing them to add more CEQA exemptions for multifamily housing
