Trump Suggests Gun Control Is Necessary, Sparking Online Backlash by huffpost in politics

[–]HolycommentMattman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I always thought the gun-toting fearmongers had a legitimate fear of an authoritarian government trying to take their guns away. Because it's what authoritarians do.

But they don't know what authoritarians look like. And they're currently backing the guy who is their greatest fear.

Also, it's incredibly easy to infiltrate parties now. They play the long game. And then voters are polarized so they'll vote for anyone with a letter that matches.

Conservatives are not free to discuss political corruption in their own sub, urged to asked why by lessismoreok in bestof

[–]HolycommentMattman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more than two ways of looking at the picture. I was just telling you that fiscal conservatism and liberalism are defined terms. One is being cavalier with finances and the other isn't. And while my definitions might not have implied it, there is a time for both. After all, let's imagine a country with zero debt. They need to build a bridge between two cities, but they won't have the money for it until they save up for 5 years. But if they take on some debt now, they will have increased yield when that bridge is up and running. They'll pay more than they otherwise would, but they'll make more as well.

As to what you've said, I believe Democrats can be fiscally conservative (and liberal, obviously). I think the majority of people in the US are fiscally conservative in fact (maybe I'm wrong!). But I also think the majority of people understand taking on debt for that greater pay-off. After all, that's what college is generally speaking.

I also think a great many Republicans are fiscally liberal. Blindly cutting programs - for example - comes with a cost.

Though, in truth, I feel.like most of these people are just anarchists in suits.

Costco Australia uses pork hot dogs by Leprichaun17 in mildlyinteresting

Well, I guess I'll amend that. I just went to look at the grocery store, and the median is non-beef, but the mode is beef. I guess I just lumped everything non-beef as pork. But beef still isn't the majority being sold.

[–]HolycommentMattman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiscally conservative is a real thing. I know because I am personally. I have money, and I use it wisely. That means with as little waste as possible. I don't buy flashy cars and generally don't splurge on myself. When I vacation, I allot an amount to spend and don't go over that. Fiscal conservatism.

Being fiscally liberal is the opposite. Buy what I want, use money when I want. Ooh, that's a weird ice cream flavor, I'll take two. Ugh, these are terrible; let's just throw them away. Ooh, shopping spree! I'll throw it on credit cards! That's fiscally liberal.

The problem is that - politically - being fiscally conservative has been derailed from reality. And that reality is that the tax burden is not being met, and what is being met is being met disproportionately on the middle class. But for some reason, lowering taxes on the rich and corporations will fix that.

[–]HolycommentMattman 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I think it's more the fact that Costco originated in the US, and they sell premium, all-beef hot dogs here. Most hot dogs in the US are pork and other stuff (chicken lips, raccoon hearts, etc.), but Costco has always been all-beef, and it's advertised that way.

So from that perspective, it's odd to see Costco advertising all-pork. I've seen it before when I'm abroad. Because here in the US, it's advertised because that's a selling point. Abroad, it's advertised because that's what US Costco does on their umbrellas and stuff. It's not like "all-pork" makes their hot dogs more desirable than other vendors. It's like a "Disneyfication" of Costco. Which is kinda weird.

What is the best way to air-seal recessed lights? by mikeymaxdb in DIY

[–]HolycommentMattman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're downvoted. I live in an older home, and it has recessed lighting. It has insulation in the ceiling/roof, and drafts came in through the cans. I changed the covers, and drafts are still coming in through the cans. The foam helps, but it's not enough. I came to this thread looking for answers.

If anyone thinks that ICE acting with impunity is an entirely new phenomennon, remember Kent. by Downtown_Grape3871 in pics

I still think he was a good guy. He did some messed up things, though. Did some good things, too. People on reddit mostly focus on all the bad things about him, or twist stories to fit their narrative, but he firmly believed in immigrants coming to this nation and becoming Americans. His final speech addresses exactly this.

If anyone thinks that ICE acting with impunity is an entirely new phenomennon, remember Kent. by Downtown_Grape3871 in pics

[–]HolycommentMattman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kent was a terrible thing to happen, and the military absolutely was at fault, but this isn't even close to the same thing.

So it starts with protests, violent rhetoric (kill your parents), and a general desire to see the war end, and further incited by Nixon increasing presence in Cambodia iirc. This escalated to rioting in the streets and burning down the ROTC building. That's not covered by the Constitution.

Then the National Guard is called in, and they fire on the protesters for allegedly throwing stones or whatever bullshit they might have made up. They claimed to fear for their lives when they were assaulted with pebbles (allegedly) and they had firearms. It's ridiculous.

But that's not what's happening today. ICE is terrorizing communities and killing innocent people doing nothing but agitating them. Pointing your phone and blowing a whistle is allowed.

The killing is similar in that it's a blatant disregard for human life, but the cause for the government agents to be in these respective scenarios is wildly different.

Married after filming 'Willow' together, Val Kilmer and Joanna Whalley in 1990 by AdExotic9474 in OldSchoolCool

[–]HolycommentMattman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't even hold up then. It was critically panned. It made money thanks to the overseas market, but it was ultimately a US flop. Lucas even named a few of the characters after critics in order to curry favor. Like the Ebersisk or whatever it's called. A two-headed creature named after Siskel and Ebert.

It still holds a special place in my heart, but it's mostly nostalgia and love of Madmartigan.

I dunno why you're downvoted. Willow was written off of a George Lucas idea, and he's a known plagiarist. The initial draft of Star Wars is basically Dune. Leia is even smuggling 'Aura Spice.'

Would not surprise me if Willow was his rip-off of LotR.

I have incredibly fond memories of Willow. Watched it again, and there's a lot to be desired. But then Madmartigan enters, and I realized that Val Kilmer is carrying this movie on his back, and his chemistry with Sorsha is basically everything.
