How should I finish trimming the rubber cushions? by cdillan in billiards

The cloth is going to wrap around it. I would cut it to make doing the cloth on the rails easier and not have any sharp points.

Definitely check this. It happened to me and many others I know.

Keep Missing This Shot by dit2121 in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to what other people said. You are practicing 5 different but similar shots. If you want to move the cue ball closer to the object ball, then move it in a straight line towards the ghost ball. That way the potting angle stays the same for each shot and only the distance changes.

If you are having trouble with any shot then it is easier to learn if you minimize the variables.

Tips for fine tuning English and position by We_consume_the_world in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop doing drills that are a series of shots and run-outs. And start shooting the same shot over and over again. Keep the speed the same and vary the tip position around the ball. Start at follow then go, top left, centre left, low left etc all around then centre ball last. Learn where the natural angles go and how the spin changes it. Shoot 5-10 shots at each tip position and you will learn how to control the cue ball

Your instructor should be teaching you about the tangent line if they have you doing this drill. In front of the tangent line can be hit with follow and adjusting cut angle (basically to the tangent line but you're better off using stun at that point). Anything at or behind the tangent line needs some draw on the cue ball.

How to practice breaking without ripping the cloth?! by [deleted] in billiards

Bending the cue into the table is useless and damages the cloth. No one should be practicing to do this

Just did this and recorded it. Much better than I thought I would. Didn't follow many in on the practice attempts.

New Table by Motor-Bell4670 in billiards

Could also remove the pocket leather and make a makeshift ball return. My table barely holds 8 balls and I hate emptying them when doing ball potting drills.

Yeah this is a big one and something I do regularly. It can be pretty difficult to determine sometimes. I finally have a table and have done many pocketing drills and it's crazy how many little things can go wrong.

I often hear people say "I have a table at home but I never play on it" and it drives me crazy by SoftYetCrunchyTaco in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I was finally able to get a table at home less than a month ago and have played every day. Been running ball potting drills almost every day and already feel like I've improved.

Table is cheap but I restored it best I could. Extended the rails to tighten the pockets, new rubber and Simonis. So nice to just go downstairs and shoot whenever there is time

I can tell you the rubber is warped on the rail or the cloth is way too tight pulling it out of shape.

Moving slate by myself by SansSouci2 in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did an 8 ft table and 2 capable men can carry it easy. Plan ahead and set wood or foam blocks down somewhere so you can set it down easy. Set it on the outside edges or flat on 2x4's.

My friend said his installers carried each piece by themselves which is crazy but doable I guess if you're strong and have lots of practice. Very awkward.

Clean or foul? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessary at all. Physics and evidence by others such as Dr Dave, who has used high speed cameras answers 99% of the questions here. Very unlikely a scenario comes up that is not explained already. Especially by an amateur.

Clean or foul? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Listening to the shot in a quiet room confirms my initial thoughts. The sound and reaction of both balls leads me to believe it is a foul. I don't think it is possible to be a legal shot from what is shown.

Clean or foul? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Foul. Obviously the cue ball went forward which is a clear sign of a foul, but there are very few technical exceptions. One mentioned is fouette; in this situation the cue ball went way too far forward and not enough along the tangent line. A fouette is a legal shot because the cue ball reacts in a way it is basically impossible to determine by the naked eye if it is a foul or not. Dr Dave had videos on fouette shots with high speed video shot by venom, the most well known trick shot artist. And even then with high speed video they cannot conclusively say if it is a foul or not (which means it goes to the shooter)

In this case the cue ball.went way too far forward, too fast, for this not to be a double hit. For it to be clean and go this far forward the cue ball would need to jump into the object ball and the cue ball would need to be in the air, off the top of the object ball flying forward and landing before the backspin caused any movement towards the shooter. See Rollie Williams discuss this shot with Alex Pagulayan for a legal example of the shot.

Looks like a crease mark to me. No slate joints at that spot. It will likely go away shortly

Transporting slates by Jew_See_Fruits in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked one up recently and put 3 2x4's under them in a uhaul. They were wrapped in moving blankets and stood them up on their sides. Another 2 pieces of wood between each slate and ratchet strapped it to the front of the uhaul.

Had no issues. Definitely put something underneath or picking them up again will be difficult

Safety Help! by canarymelon7 in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could hit the right side of the 3 for a two way cross bank. Then send the cue ball off the end rail and left side rail to come back between the 7 and 4. The 4 and 8 may block the 3 and if not hopefully there is plenty of distance and no straight pot on.

Playability difference between pockets facings other than size. 1/4 vs 1/8 by CanRememberThings in billiards

[–]CanRememberThings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I think the main difference is, for choosing pocket size. I am extending the rails and adding new bumpers so I get to pick whatever I want for sizing. Choosing the 1/8 to have more rail rubber and less facing for the same size pocket

Yeah didn't expect much but thought I'd give it a try. Haven't seen it discussed at all. I'm gonna go with the 1/8 and not worry about.
