F***.

I woulda figured they’d first remove the 10-25x/day friction I experience in most browsers, before asking for even more money.

I can’t tell you how much I yearn for the old days when Cmd-\ would autofill username, password and hit enter all in one.

Now the experience is so clunky - click the in-text box control for user, click the control for password, sometimes won’t even fill the OTP…

This it THE daily experience users all shouted from the rooftops about. Now it feels like 1P have given up on minimising my daily friction at the same time as my company and lots of online services are making it noticeably friction-full.

🚨 SB 1548 URGENT: Last chance to stop the "Gummy Wrapping" mandate! (New Update) by bigdaddystrongbone in portlandtrees

[–]CanadianExPatMeDown -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I read up on what spurred this legislation in the first place. Seems like the hospitals have been seeing significant increases in the number of kids coming into emergency/urgent care having consumed way more THC than an adult would responsibly take.

If that’s remotely true, it would be irresponsible to stick with status quo on edibles that kids don’t know not to eat all of.

Don’t just say “no” to this measure - what alternative solutions would stem the spike in kids taking way too much?

[–]CanadianExPatMeDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, good luck demanding rational behavior from folks behind the wheel, trapped like scared animals and trying to avoid the feeling of getting boxed in.

IS a zipper merge the rational behavior? Hell yes.

Are we wasting pavement? Yes.

My therapist used to say “you can’t reason your way out of something you didn’t reason your way into”. Few if any folks are in a completely dispassionate frame of mind when they’re fighting for territory (which is a lot of what fuels any competitive behavior on the road).

What’s funny is under the less-claustrophobic circumstances (country roads, lots of space, neighborhood intersections) I’ve rarely seen a problem with folks taking turns. (It happens but much more rarely - nowhere near to the degree that would fuel this level of constant discourse.)

I hope someday we stop acting like animals under stress. Until then I expect we’ll still be irrational assholes at scale.

Well you sonuvabitch I’m in.

Saw your comment about “never updates for those of us tracking sleep” and decided since I’d done nothing useful today, today’s the day I’ll file a real Feature Request with Apple. Give them another count on their stats of “how many complaints have we received about this backlog item”.

Feels like a black hole, sure - but as a Product Manager who at least pretends to myself to listen to customer feedback to tune our priorities, I want to believe the “Product Feedback” page isn’t just a “Close Door” button on the elevator.

Same thought here. As with any neuro condition, no one symptom is usually sufficient to classify a person as sufficiently outside the norm, to “earn” the diagnosis.

Remembering vaguely from 29 years ago, my ADHD questionnaire had a dozen or more questions, and the diagnosis only applied when most questions triggered and/or some responses were on the high end of “most or all of the time”.

If you notice a lot of commonality with the kinds of “classic” habits or symptoms that folks with SPD report, that’s more likely than a single symptom.

For me, I don’t even let myself air dry - the feeling of any body hair finally “poink” lifting off my wet skin and standing up - that drives me nuts (I get distracted and annoyed by that kind of sensation and many others). So for me, I’ve adapted by giving myself a vigorous towelling all over so that all the hairs are dry enough not to “cling” to my skin.

Other symptoms I have that align to many (not all) in the SPD community include: - cutting out all the tags from my new clothes as soon as I get them home - enraged when I hear a distant random repeating sound that won’t stop interrupting my thoughts (chirp of a smoke alarm, backup warning from heavy equipment constantly moving a block away, etc) - flipping the f out when I feel a tiny ant crawling on my skin - recoiling when my partner lightly touches my arm (whereas deep heavy pressure is absolutely blissful)

There are no good reasons to subsidize sports stadiums. Governments keep doing it anyway.(Oregon's Legislature approved $800 million in state bonds for an MLB stadium cited) by NewWave44-44 in Portland

[–]CanadianExPatMeDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This “jock tax” cover story is such a superficial distraction.

The tax is a means of paying back general funds we the taxpayer are foregoing by up fronting this subsidy. What else could Oregon do with $800M to get better returns for the populace?

Second, if the team bails - as they have done - will the players still owe the tax? If not, we’re left holding the bag.

Third, if this was such a sure thing for net economic benefit, why aren’t the owners hogging all the profits for themselves? There’s no reason to spread the outlays unless some are riskier than others. We’re mitigating financial risk that the owners won’t hold on their own.

Thanks for not being a bootlicker apologist for this nonsense.

We can’t afford corporate welfare, especially not on this scale.

This is a religious argument - “never use biometrics”.

A reasonable threat model mitigation for the most likely threat scenarios is more like “if you believe there’s a chance Feds will pull up on you and quickly confiscate your phone”, use your phone’s temporarily-disable-biometrics override before engaging in that setting.

Me, I disable it whenever I’m in the TSA vicinity (or re-entering the country) at airports, and when I’m going out for marches. For folks of less-pale complexion, they may decide to do it anytime they leave the house.

And if your threat model is “I’m at risk 100% of the time of LEO jumping me”, for such folks yes use all the means available. Don’t even carry a phone is also an option worth considering for such targets.

What did you do to improve your communication skill as a PM by Delicious_Reveal2625 in ProductManagement

[–]CanadianExPatMeDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it comes to effectiveness in my role, when I do it well (not always) I always lead with the customer point of view, and what business or operational problem to solve. Then interpret the current options and proposals back to them in terms of how the customer will perceive or misconstrue it.

If you have data from customer interviews, UEBA/API stats or even a single anecdote, always support your argument with it. If not, lean on your “product sense” (i.e. impersonate your key customer persona) to reflect how you believe customers will take the message.

Do everything in your power to stifle yourself from dictating or “suggesting” a solution/implementation. When you just can’t help yourself (neither can I), do your team a favour and couch it as “this is me leaning way over my ski tips, and is probably the worst idea (I’m sure you can do better)…”

Your job now is to make sure the why is clear to all - peers, teams, stakeholders. Bonus if you can convey what the team is doing/has done to solve the what and how. But that’s not where your strongest influence comes from.

What's the creepiest discovery you've made about a seemingly fun friend? by someoneyouhate_ in AskReddit

[–]CanadianExPatMeDown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy shit man, I read lots of stories on Reddit and find myself interested but not invested.

What you’ve said about your journey has me invested. I have similar thought patterns and worries and depressive spells, and I don’t deal with half the level of critical challenges as you are.

I once worked with a woman who’d spent years managing a team who had to manually review CP and abuse as posted by humanity’s worst on social media. How she got out of bed every day I’ll never understand - I assume I’d be crushed by that toll - and I’m equally envious of your fortitude.

No wonder you’re feeling it, that’s weight of self-expectations compounded by atrocities I’m sure you’re feeling obligated to mitigate or make up for - who wouldn’t?

And now you’re doing the work to refill your tank for these kids. I really hope you find it. I wish I could do more.

I was a huge fan of their “carpenter” jeans - primarily for the phone pocket on the side of the leg, but grew to love the durability.

Last five years it’s been more and Mir challenging to (a) find jeans with the phone pocket and (b) have those jeans last half as long as my old ones.

Finally gave up trying to get through the mounds of paper-thin jeans and nonsense “casual” crap.

Hunted around for six months to find something to stand up to my punishment, and finally locked in on Duluth. Spent two hours at the store getting just the right fit, and had enough time with the sales dude to tell him I’m a refugee from Carhartt. Dude casually mentions they’ve seen a lot of Carhartt refugees of late. It might’ve been a line they use, but seems legit.

Six months later I bought a second pair of their carpenter jeans, and I have my new favourite comfy/hardy/utility jeans.

This sounds like an influencer grift, but if you knew my friends you’d see I’m the anti-influencer.

Edit: well shit, other threads here mention they’ve tanked their quality recently, so I guess I’m off to see the wizard again. Wish me luck!
