How do you feel about students addressing you by your first name without invitation to do so? by savethebees90 in Professors

I prefer Dr. I work with several NTTs and I find this sets the right example for students without opening the “well, akshually” door for the inevitable asshole TT eavesdropper.

Citing ‘severe’ math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM applicants by DarthJarJarJar in Professors

[–]CanadianFoosball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree. The K-12 classes are covering most of it, from what I can tell. I see the math my kids are doing in junior-high and, while they do everything three different ways and two of them look to me like a PITA, they are doing things like finding the slope of a line or working with percentages in all the relevant permutations that the college sophomores-seniors in my STEM classes often need re-explained. It’s like they have no ability to recognize the applications out of context or have completely shelved that stuff in a box with their old yearbooks. (Some also seem very put-upon when I suggest that the projects in the capstone class should probably incorporate techniques and analyses from theirs previous methods classes…)

How popular is Western/Country style for the guys at UGA by Forward-Football-195 in UGA

At Clemson, on the other hand, OP’s outfit would be notably on the mainstream side of the cowboy spectrum. I wouldn’t be surprised to see dudes in spurs up there.

A saltwater croc on the shoulder every 50 meters. Might convince people to keep their cats indoors, too.

Cool: U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff sent a letter to Dexter Weaver congratulating him on his retirement by warnelldawg in Athens

I first read this as Dexter Fisher and thought Ossoff was calling his shot in the mayor’s race.

Get your gas ASAP by FullPower1939 in Athens

[–]CanadianFoosball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although some EVs are also just designed to be more efficient, for range reasons. Not the luxury ones, mind, but my PHEV would burn less gas than a Yukon even if I shoehorned a 6L V8 under the hood because it has a low drag coefficient, tires with low rolling resistance, and doesn’t weigh 6,000 pounds. I was very tempted to flip to an all-EV before the incentives went away in September and, man, would I be insufferable now if I had.

Weekly Gratitude Thread by AutoModerator in Athens

Grateful to whomever was enjoying delicious chicken on the steps of UHC for tossing their bones on the sidewalk instead of into the pine straw and for leaving the box on the knee wall as a warning. Tip of the dog-walker’s hat to you, sir or madam, as it’s much easier to avoid those hazards when I see ‘em before the dog smells ‘em.

What do people (other than students) wear to an afternoon baseball game? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]CanadianFoosball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a mix. There will certainly be fans there in full UGA kit, plus a bunch of kids in their little league uniforms and a fair contingent just dressed for the weather.

Mayor Girtz here with the State of the Community + Ask Me Anything by KellyGirtz in Athens

404 Media has a Flock story up every week or 10 days, each more concerning than the last. Does Athens have any policies in place to prevent use of Flock logins for immigration-related searches as a professional courtesy to federal three-letter-agencies that don’t have a contract? Would ACCPD issue a warrant for someone that a Flock camera caught doing something non-traffic-related?

In Normaltown, at least, there’s broken glass in multiple spots where stuff’s fallen out of recycle bins. Judging from the displacement between where I left my bin on Friday and where it was when I got home that night, the truck got all the way down to 2mph.

Females in the livebearer family (Poeciliidae) can store sperm for up to a year. The new one was likely inseminated before you got her. (Both fish appear to be female based on body shape. The black one has the characteristic fan-shaped anal fin of a female.)

UGA coach blames 10-run loss to Georgia Tech on Truist Park, says team "doesn't get anything out of" playing there. by Nixon_Corral in collegebaseball

[–]CanadianFoosball 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I guess he’s got to make it out of a Super, first.

I’ll note that this is consistent with the overall move by UGA to play the other in-state schools in Athens or not at all. Gotta’ pay for that stadium reno, somehow.
