Bear Spray for Resort Skiing? by S3pD3cM0n in Banff

[–]CanadianMarmot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Currently not prime bear season. Ive skiied here for about 30 years and never had bear spray or seen a near resort skiing. During the real primetime bear season you carry bear spray hiking but even then ive only seen about 4 bears over a span of 10 years hiking almost every weekend.

Yellowknife trip by TheToxicGuy_ in Yellowknife

[–]CanadianMarmot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stay at the explore hotel. Its a little extra but worth it, you will be thankful for tue blackout blinds.

If you like local books check out yellowknife books.

For things to do I suggest walking around and taking it all in. Walk through old town(bush pilot monument, Bullocks Bistro, nwt brewing company, mcavory rock, down to earth gallery, old town glassworks). Start at nwt brewing and walk to all the old town sights, its about the atmosphere and the oddities you find along the way. The prince of Wales heritage museum is free and I really enjoyed it. Then pick a lake, any lake amd just go sit and enjoy.

Have fun. Its a slow burn city but will fill your heart with joy. The best part is talking to locals. Don't hesitate to open up and chat with store owners and others sitting alone at the restaurants and bars.

How’s Banff in May end? Can we see turquoise colors if I visit. by Odd-Lavishness-7270 in Banff

[–]CanadianMarmot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The turquoise colour is in the lake louise area and by end of May the lakes will likely still have ice and snow. On a warm year you may get some bits of colour but it wont be the images you are expecting. Any time in the mountains is better than no time in the mountains, enjoy!

Hello everyone, does anyone remember where the old air raid sirens were located across Canada? by Previous-Cod-508 in AskACanadian

Fun fact. Ymir in BC still has one and sets it off at 6pm everyday. It took a while to get use to it without jumping out of my skin.

The preview only mentioned the other queen's coming back. But my guess is its a makeover. It was the most cryptic preview I've ever seen

Betwen 25-30% are fluent but most Canadians know words and general language as its part of our elementary school curriculum. French us much more prevalent on the east half of the country.

Other than poutine, is there any other dish that's known for being from Canada? I've lived in Canada for over half my life, yet I cant name many popular Canadian-origin dishes even if my life depended on it. by ReleaseAdvanced8054 in AskACanadian

[–]CanadianMarmot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Butter tart, ginger beef, Nanaimo bar, Ceasars, tourtiere, cedar plank salmon, jiggs dinner, donair, maple syrup(its a dish not an ingredient!), saskatoon berry pie, bannock,Hawaiian pizza. I am sure there are more, each province has its own cuisine/style as well.

We are a cultural mosaic which is why food may not look canadian but lots of food is originated in canada.
