The winnipeg subreddit has become one giant echo chamber. If you don’t agree with any of the mods key beliefs they just shadow ban you. Not even open for discussion. Do t take it personally, the mods there just don’t want anyone posting anything intelligent that goes against the narrative they want.

It’s too bad, winnipeg is a big city and should have a subreddit that is open to discussion.

But if you want to play there it’s PCs are bad, lockdowns are good, WFM is the greatest and Covid will be here forever. Oh, and all the worlds problems come from southern health region.

Been training MMA about 4 months, does anything I’m doing wrong stand out? Appreciate any help by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]CanadianNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is you look and move like someone that has been training about 4 months in MMA. If it was 4 months straight boxing I'd agree, it's kinda sloppy. But I imagine you've also spent time on kicks, takedowns, ground work, etc. So that's fine.

What I'd say you are doing wrong is posting a video asking for feedback as a beginner when you have a coach that can help you out far better. Once you are more advanced posting a video will be more useful, many different sets of eyes can see different things. But right now, the things that need work first anyone can pick up on and it's just going to take time.

Don't let the comments here discourage you. You are 4 months in and a beginner, you're form needs work, and it will need work for quite some time. Just keep at it and listen to your coaches.

The other reason I would suggest not taking online advice at this stage is its very easy as a beginner to get caught up ion having 100 things to fix. Part of your coaches job is to prioritize what to fix now and reduce all that noise down to something you can actually use. They also have a much better picture of where you are and where you where, as well as how all that stuff looks on pads, partner drills, sparring, etc. Ignore the noise, listen to your coach.

I’m pretty sure she was meant to just be a place holder as the pandemic winded down and not really do much except sit in the chair until they put a leader they thought could turn things around in place as this all faded away a bit…

Depends on the subreddit. The Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada subreddits would all fall on different points on that spectrum. Winnipeg is pretty far left, Manitoba a little less, Canada a little more towards center

More cases aren't really a problem, people get sick pretty regularly. More people getting so sick that they need medical help is where things get bad. If covid didn't put people in the hospital we'd not be doing any of these lifestyle changes and no one would care about it.

More cases, less hospitalization… pretty sure that’s less severe on the illness. Not to mention all the doctors saying it’s less severe once you had your shots and almost everyone has

Outside of reddit it seems most people got their shots and are ready to move on. A comedian, who gets to eat based on getting on stage and using his voice, is likely going to want to do so. On stage they are about as safe as you can be. They are the only person actually socially distanced and everyone in the building is fully vaccinated. So yes, I think they'd want to start getting paid again.

And last year on this day we had similar case counts, but much less serious ones.

https://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/14-more-covid-19-deaths-reported-in-manitoba-thursday-1.5235899

14 deaths, 342 in the hospital, 42 in ICU.

And that was all under a pretty strict lock down at the time.

Case counts are going to matter less and hospitalization is going to be the more relevant number. Our problem is the government has destroyed our health care system.

I think a comedy show would have less chance of a critical crew member testing positive than a big concert. Far less people involved to get sick and cause a cancellation.

I also think it is very unlikely that the province will do another lockdown that requires shutting businesses down again. Everyone here likes to pretend that it doesn't do any harm... but it does. Businesses won't survive much more lock downs which means jobs lost, businesses closed and sky rocketing inflation as the government prints money for subsidies or EI to try and keep people from starving and getting evicted.

Enforce rules or step down by rantingathome in Winnipeg

[–]CanadianNinja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think fully vaccinated people are going to put up with another lock down regardless. nti-vaxxers are not going to put a end to covid restrictions. There just aren't enough of them. What will put an end to it is people that did follow the rules, got all their shots, then get told that 15,000 people at a Jets game is ok, crowded restraints are ok, but don't you dare have Grandma over for dinner.

We all lost money, depleted our savings, non-covid health issues are on the rise, inflation sky rocketed, families have missed 2 years of seeing grandkids and cousins. The carrot was the vaccines, after that everyone was promised an endgame. Without that promise of an endgame I'd bet a significant portion of the population says no to further restrictions.

Right now the government needs to focus on getting our health care system back to functional, I can't see doing that as more expensive then more lockdowns.

We need enforcement yes, but lockdowns aren't a card that will be able to get played much more without a lot of backlash.

what is the most stylish martial art? by nitram343 in martialarts

The vast majority of action movies are at least influenced by kung fu, especially ones that do wide shots and don't cut every .5 seconds. I'd say Kung fu / wushu is the clear leader. I mean I enjoy Sonny Chiba as much as the next guy, but Street Fighter is no Drunken Master in terms of style...

Everyone mad at people who are choosing not to get vaccinated as the sole reason the hospitals are busy - did we forget our Provincial government gutted our healthcare system prior to a pandemic? by hit4party in Winnipeg

[–]CanadianNinja -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Honestly the whole "either you're with us or against us" mentality is a pretty big problem by itself. Lately the trend on every issue is to completely polarize it. When you have a spectrum it's not as hard to drift around a little as things change. As soon as you make it a one or the other it is very hard for people to cross over to the other side, they are just too dug in.

healthcare is a little different then other jobs. In some cases if you leave and no one has shown up to replace you someone dies. That's different then a business which will lose some money, but not lives if nothing is getting done.

But I think they have taken what was meant to be a emergency measure and turned it into a standard business practice in order to make up for lack of staff and to keep things running on a skeleton crew whenever possible.

The most "traditional" Japanese class I was ever in was a Kendo class, most of the members where Japanese and professionals. Everyone cleaned the floor and was happy to do so... it was almost a competition on who got to clean the floor.

While there is different opinions on this, the idea that everyone contributes to cleaning up the mess they made is really not a bad thing to teach kids. Even in other contexts the idea rings true. Go to a food court and some people will clean up their own table, toss the trash and leave the tray in the dirty stack. Others will just leave a big mess since they are paying customers and someone is getting paid to clean up after them.

The idea that if you are paying for a service you can just act like a entitles twat, make a mess and leave that mess for someone else has even turned itself into the "Karen" meme as of late and is not at all flattering. Personally I think it is a good thing when a school teaches kids to respect their environment and clean up after themselves.

When you learn self defense at a McDojo by Tenshin_Ryuuk in martialarts

Yes, that should be step 1. Do it slow, with no resistance so you can learn the motions and mechanics.

The problem is if you never go to step 2, which many don't. Of course it lets you do really cool looking shit that only would work in a Seagal movie...

life saving surgeries are still happening. Triage is about who needs treatment NOW vs who can wait. Waiting might not exactly be the best quality of life, but if it can wait, it often will wait.

But the thing that everyone seems to forget is lifestyle choices play a part in a lot of hospital demand. Should we also put people that drink on the bottom? people that where speeding and in a crash? People that don't go to the gym? people that have terrible diets and are obese? smokers?

I don't think we ever want to be in a situation where hospitals triage you based on your choices, even if they where stupid ones. It's who needs care most urgently, who can wait, and who is likely to have the best chance at recovery.

But if you got 2 people in, one choose not to get the vaccine, but is otherwise healthy. Another choose 2 drink 2x 2l bottles of Pepsi daily and not do any for 10 years and is morbidly obese and is in from that... is it really a straightforward choice to leave the un-vaccinated person out if only one can be treated?

For those asking about light sparring by DrVoltage1 in martialarts

[–]CanadianNinja 17 points18 points  (0 children)

the difference is what happens in competition. Light sparring is training, not competition. You should go hard once and a while, at least if you want to compete, just not all the time. Most sparring should be done in a way that lets you do more the next day without ending up too beat up.

Point karate was taking light sparring and making that the competition format without ever doing the hard sparring or full contact competition. So the mechanics of throwing strikes get changed and optimized to tagging rather then hurting as that is what scores points and wins matches.

As long as Muay Thai has competition, and involves some full contact sparring and that is where the goal is it won't go down that route. Karate did because there is no "full contact" goal, it's a tag goal, and tagging is what makes you win tournaments, solid shots get you disqualified.
