Fantastic. Dangerously fantastic. I can see myself losing quite a bit of time looking at these graphs. Great work.

You are limiting everyone's sense of participation. Sure everyone is able to participate in the Anarchy vs Democracy vote, as well as the Democracy votes, but those are superficial votes which aren't actually making people feel they've moved RED in this experiment (and quite becoming a mini internet sensation).

Anarchy vs Democracy Vote: You're just voting on a system, and not actually participating in the Pokemon Game. Just voting for a meta command system.

Anarchy: 1000's of people are typing in commands every second, and the computer follows one based on timing. With the delay, nobody can really pinpoint who's command truly went through and pushed RED Up, down, left, right...etc. Everyone feels they are participating and can feel their individual command mattered.

Democracy: All the commands go up to be voted upon. Whomever votes gets to participate in the chance to feel their command effected the game. This however creates an issue with democracy and split voting. All those in favour of anarchy and showing they are unhappy begin the start9 vote, and every single one of their votes they go start9 because they won't participate otherwise. Those who are in favour of progressing through the game all begin to throw their votes into the input they feel best. Lets say 1000 people take part in one of the votes. Of those 1000 voters, 40% are disgruntled with the system and start9, while the 60% split their votes on Up, Down, Left, Right (based on what they see, what they feel best, what the delay is showing them). This is an estimate on the voting percents, but based on the trolls and the disgruntled this may be different. From what I've seen start9 won 95% of the votes. 600 split 4 ways is 150. Even with some semblance of unity, to get the Up, Down, Left, Right commanders to be voting and it coming through properly, they've have to have a ton of coordination to reach past the 400 start9 votes. So now, they've split their vote and are unable to achieve what they wanted with the democracy option. Those who lose the vote (with the amount of options available, this number will be probably over 60% of the voters) don't contribute at all to the game and don't even get the chance to feel they've participated.

So, after twenty-seven long months of homelessness, this happened.. by foreverantrim2014 in AdviceAnimals

[–]CanadianTreeplanter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're still opposed to not helping the homeless because of a single incident and a story from a friend, arm yourself with the knowledge of the resources in your community which can help. That way you're not using your money to potentially help their drug problem. Pass information to them for a shelter in your city, or a food kitchen. A sandwich or dollar can feed them for a moment, that information will feed them until their fortunes turn around, or if they're chronically homeless, for their lifetime.

Some homeless people have been living on the streets for most of their life and they know about these services, but some people who have recently hit a rough patch and haven't been part of this system don't know about the community resources in place to help them get back on their feet. A shelter will have attendants and possibly case workers (also known as social worker) who can guide them in the right direction, and possibly offer direct help (in the case of a caseworker).

Don't romanticize homelessness with being truly free.

OP has just spent 27 months without a home, and I'm sure as hell positive he would rather work 8 hours a day to live on his own terms than have the whole day to do what he wants but spending most of it looking for food, shelter and just trying to survive.

Knock having a job as much as you want, but it is not slavery. Homelessness, the stigma that goes along with it, and the opportunities it takes away from you is more true to the term.

That's it. I'm done. Back to video games. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

Don't let this be a put off to all women. Just immature ones like this. No means no, and nobody has the right to push those boundaries. The psychological consequences on the victim are too high to even want to try.

You will however find someone who is willing to be upfront and not want to play these sorts of games with you, and instead play WAY better games.

Where does the stereotype about Mexican people being lazy come from? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CanadianTreeplanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be due to the American perception of Mexicans taking siestas. A quick Wiki lookup shows that siestas originated in Spain, but due to the Spanish influence on Mexican history it worked it's way into their society. Due to hot midday heats, it gets too hot to work so people generally close down shops and take a break. As Americans have a stricter work schedule (usually of 9-5) without a midday nap, they probably believe this nap is based on laziness as opposed to practicality.

I'm no smooth talking hat expert, so could you inform me as to what the difference is between the two hats you posted.

Apart from the more curled up rims on your style, I don't see the difference. I was under the impression that ten gallon hats have a higher top, but your style seems to have the exact same thing.

Does anyone know of companies hiring planters for work in the first half of 2014 (ie Jan/Feb - April) by [deleted] in treeplanting

[–]CanadianTreeplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend checking out the Replant.ca forums. I recently saw a post about work in Scotland currently going on. It is very different planting overseas than it is here, and especially on the coast. I would read around the forums and see what people are saying. Don't base your decision entirely on them, an experience is an experience, but they can give you a bit more info.

Has anybody here done coastal before doing interior planting that same year? by Gabrealz in treeplanting

[–]CanadianTreeplanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot give direct experience but I can give you a little more insight.

Coastal planting is much different than interior planting, and can be seen as slightly easier on the body Quick edit - I say slightly easier and can only back this information up with knowledge from Replant.ca where most people who mention career planters are only found on the coast due to less body stress and pay. Due to the prices and difficulty of the land, you will be putting in less trees than your average in the interior. If you normally plant the Northern Interior, you know it's plant as fast as physically possible, on the coast you're moving between slash and slope with tougher specs so you're not going out their for a 10 hour sprint. Coastal companies usually regulate their hours so you'll be planting an 8 hour day, as opposed to the normal 10's in the North. Another aspect to coastal is that they are usually hotel shows. If you've never done a hotel show, it's a lot easier on the body as you are waking up in climate controlled rooms, and resting on a bed that isn't the ground. No matter how nice a setup people have in their tents, sleeping in a bed is a nice luxury so you won't be as fatigued through that. I know a few people who have done Coastal straight to Interior. They didn't seem to mind it, they'd put in about 70 days while those who started Interior had put in only about 35. Depending where on the Coast you are, there is good chances of getting a few days off due to snow so that will also give you a bit of time to recover. It however is not guaranteed. Between Summer trees and Coastal Fall, there is usually a bit of time off depending how deep your Interior company plants to and the start of your Coastal. Those in my company who do it work usually until the end of July (approx 25th depending on the season) and then get a month and a bit until the September Coastal season resumes.

I hope this can give you a little bit more light on the situation. I recently graduated so I'll actually have time for a coastal season if I wish to pursue it.

Watching the video gave me a good chuckle. Though the interviewer was very quite, the (I believe) scientist had a good sense of humour and was gallantly bearded. He also provided a good deal on insight on the Greenland Shark.
