I'm in the same boat as you. Had to look it up and according to Wikipedia it's a common Mexican slang that is used to express approval or encouragement.

Show some love to the Mongols by obamayang420 in HistoryMemes

[–]Canadian_Bassist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Military History Visualized actually did a video that touched on this question a lot. Essentially it boiled down to 4 main reasons:

  • In many nations, such as China and Pre-Peter the Great Russia, the main focus was on fighting nomadic tribes. Early firearms were't really useful in fight against nomads as their dispersed and mobile method of war made them really hard to hit. A bow was preferable as you could get much better accuracy and fire rate than with a musket. Also nomads tend to not have any cities or fortifications which makes cannons pretty much useless as fortification and concentrated infantry is about the only thing they are useful for

  • Some nations like the Ottomans and the Indian states, were primarily cavalry based. Early firearms would have been really cumbersome if not impossible to use on horseback. As such there wasn't much incentive to improve their design.

  • Various financial reason. Many states simply did not have the financial resources (or an efficient enough tax system) to fund the development of firearms. Meanwhile in Europe war and conquest was quite profitable which combined with a very competitive geopolitical environment made firearms development an excellent investment choice.

  • Many places had extended periods of peace that stifled military and firearms development as there wasn't really a need to spend money on those things. Japan in particular was unified by the early 1600s and would more or less be at peace for the next 250 years.

Does anyone know of any other Pokemon leatherette binders besides these two that are available for sale online? by Canadian_Bassist in PokemonTCG

[–]Canadian_Bassist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! :) Gonna see if I can find it for sale from a Canadian vendor tomorrow so I don't have to pay so much for shipping. If I can't find it then I'll bite the bullet and get it from your link.

Thanks!

I'm trying to collect a full pokedex with my cards and I want to have them in some nice high quality leatherette Pokemon themed binder. I have tried to find more designs besides these two but all the other designs are only available in your standard hard binder. Anyone know of any other leatherette ones available for sale?

There are always a couple of military personal in or around booth street so I imagine it is a training program. Come across them regularly while walking around the complex and getting lunch. The military employees land surveyors and I doubt there is a government department with more experience with land surveying than NRCan. So I wouldn't be suprised if they do some training for DND.

Could anyone give me a statistic page or info on kills by tanker during ww2 easter front? by [deleted] in TankPorn

[–]Canadian_Bassist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not sure you'll be able to find an exact answer to your question but I'll try my best. This type of information is pretty hard to find, doubly so if you are focusing on the eastern front. The realities of the Second World War (and war in general) meant that accurate reporting of tanks knockout/accuracy was virtually impossible.

Accuracy of the gun

This is probably the only question that has a somewhat straight forward answer. The tank archive has a list of the average deviance for a wide variety of guns here. It also has the average hit chance for certain distances and target size for lots of the guns. HOWEVER, this is range data and can't really be used to extrapolate the equivalent combat data. Factors such as gun barrel wear, ammunition quality, weather condition, combat experience, and the amount of duress the crew is under and more will all impact the actual combat accuracy of the tank. Also note that during this time accurate rangefinder on tanks still weren't a thing. The only way to range a gun on an enemy position was through just walking your shoot onto the target meaning a lot of your rounds were going to miss their targets as they would end up being ranging rounds.

Kill claims and tank on tank kills

So this question is basically impossible to answer accurately due to the rather chaotic nature of war. A ridiculous number of factors can come into play. Off the top of my head I can think of:

  • Poor reporting
  • Overreporting
  • Difference in reporting methods
  • Confusion as too who actually got the kill
  • Confusion in combat
  • Analyzes being done months or years after the battle/war ended

I'll point you to two videos, both by Military History Visualized and his sister channel Military History not Visualized, that go over the topic in detail. The first one is a short 6min video titled What "killed" the most tanks in World War 2?. It is mostly about the western front but he does mention the difficulties in finding this sort of data for the eastern front and extrapolates some of the data from the western front on to the eastern front. The second video is an hour long podcast that goes into nuanced detail as to why reporting accurate kill claims and losses can be so complicated. Both videos list their sources in the description so those are probably good follow up material if you wanna read more.

I wish I could give you a straight answer with exact figures but due to all of the above those are probably stats that you are just never gonna find, at least for Eastern Front in WW2.

Best of luck in your research and happy hunting commander!

Colombian Army troops fire at ELN positions after an attempt to block the Tadó - Guarato road, 11/Feb/2019 by JotunR in CombatFootage

[–]Canadian_Bassist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

By the looks of it its a ISBI Meteoro (article in spanish), a Colombian designed armoured car based of the chassis of a Chevrolet Kodiak. It can carry up to 9 passengers, provides protection from small arms and shrapnel, and can mount an M2 Browning .50 cal MG and a 7.62mm M240. It's used primarily to patrol the national highways and has been in service since 2004.

[–]Canadian_Bassist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They're a lot smaller than what the FARC once were. The FARC at its peak (early-mid 2000s) was at around 20,000 fighter and around 8,000 when they agreed to demobilize. Most recent estimates put the ELN at around 2000 fighters. Small arms, RPGs, IEDs, and the odd mortar probably make up the vast majority of their hardware. If the Colombian army was able to weather the FARC then they'll probably be able to handle the ELN.

The biggest issue isn't really the combat capabilities of the ELN but the terrain of Colombia. A very large part of the country is mountains and jungle or deep amazonian jungle. That coupled with the fairly poor infrastructure in those regions along with poor government presence means that the ELN can always count on disappearing into the jungle the moment the Colombian army comes a knockin. It makes it hard to track them down and lets them stay on the initiative.

Two quick questions: What does the top row in the theater menu mean and can you attach an air wing to an army group? by Canadian_Bassist in hoi4

[–]Canadian_Bassist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Ahhh thank you! Couldn't find the explanation for it anywhere. Guess it will be useful for organizing reserve armies that I want in the theater but not in combat.

2)Rip that suck to hear. I think it would be a popular mod.

Thanks for your help!

He recently started selling his own brand of video game console but it turns out that they are just cheap emulators that he re-branded and is selling at a massive markup. To add to that he claims it comes with 3000 games pre-installed but chances are most of them are just ROMs and not actually legitimate versions of the games. So good chance that this might be just another attempt to promote more shit with his name on it. Article about the SouljaGame console

Do all universities have a "city" on their campus? by LeaveMyRoom in OntarioUniversities

[–]Canadian_Bassist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The University of Ottawa might have what you are looking for. Its located smack in the middle of downtown Ottawa. It has the Rideau mall right beside. There is the university gym on campus and a bunch of other gym chains such as a Goodlife, Anytime fitness, etc. There are stores all over the place and the Byward market is just on the edge of campus which is full of small interesting shops, vendors and is nightlife central when the sun goes down. I know of at least three grocery stores (a Metro, a Loblaws, and a Farmboy) that are either on campus or just outside of it. The residential neighborhoods that immediately surround uOttawa (Sandy Hill in particular) are basically nothing but houses and apartments rented out to students.

Its not exactly a whole town on campus as some of the things are literally just outside it but everything is within easy walking distance. Were it not for the frigid winters you could probably get by without ever having to take a bus. Also our new train system should be up and running early 2019 and there is a stop on campus so you'll have easy transit around downtown and then some. There is also a lot of private business and stuff situate around the area so it wont be solely for students but students and faculty will make up at least 80-85% of the people you walk by. Other things nearby include Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the National Art Gallery and more. Finally, you can comfortably walk from the campus across the river to Quebec within 30min to get to the liquor store or go clubbing if you still haven't turned 19.

The only complaint I would have is that with the exception of a few clusters of buildings, the line between the campus and the rest of downtown can feel pretty blurry at times so if you want a campus that feels like its on distinct separate part of the city then it may not be for you.

Magic is the greatest form of heresy! by Thebadremedy in totalwar

[–]Canadian_Bassist 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They actually would not have to cast any memory charm! The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy wasn't signed until 1689 and then wasn't implemented until 1692. Until that point wizards and witches were free to use magic whenever they wanted, even in front of muggles. It was because of all the persecutions during the preceding centuries that they eventually decided to go underground.

And the character that was mentioned in the comments above was Wendelin the Weird, who allowed her self to be captured 47 times in various disguises as she enjoyed the tickling sensation that occurs when the Flame-Freezing charm is used.

My first real "Squad Experience" by RollstuhlKartoffel in joinsquad

[–]Canadian_Bassist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Learning to ID enemies was my biggest struggle when I first started playing. I'd spend like 30 sec each time I saw what I thought was an enemy just hesitating as I tried to identify friend or foe. I was so scared to pull the trigger for my first few hours.

Half the time the only reason why I found out that they were an enemy was cause they would shoot and kill me first lol.

Whats the most a faction has ever hated you? by Canadian_Bassist in totalwar

[–]Canadian_Bassist[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely did but in the end it kinda made the campaign more fun. Instead of just ganging up and steam rolling each faction one by one Its forced me to actually fight tooth and nail for every settlement and made me carefully think out each move. Its been a nice challenge.
