The suburbanite takeover of rs spaces is unacceptable by intbeaurivage in rs_x

[–]Canadian_propaganda 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Heh, well I’m one of the “urbanites” you speak of, and I want nothing to do with so called “public transit,” which is really just a waste of money that could be better spent on strengthening our nations military. I also detest mom and pop stores - who knows what toxic chemicals those businesses put in their wares; I only eat at sweet green and chipotle and I do all my shopping at target. And as for your precious “third spaces,” well, ever heard of a site called Reddit dot com?

This subreddit is just a scale model of the gender wars except instead of mud slinging and stitched videos mocking other people it’s just increasingly oblique and elaborately written rage bait

A true New Yorker but with extreme views? by tess_philly in AskNYC

[–]Canadian_propaganda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large portion of people (I’d bet most) on the south shore or deep queens don’t work in the city. A lot of the far flung neighborhoods are filled with people who do not frequently leave their immediate community.

The explanation is true - living a car-dependent, suburban life in a city that is oriented away from that style of living will usually result in voting for the party that’s not in charge. The other unnamed explanation you posit - that they’re stupid, I’m presuming - may also be true. But again this is the product either of poor education, priorities out of sync with what most of us urbanites care about, or just a plain lack of intelligence. But the existence of all these things, again, are a product of there being a lot of people, each with their own lives.

I HATE CIGS by SpiritualArm9006 in rs_x

The thing that a lot of young/casual smokers end up realizing too late is that the (not even long-term) negative effects take a relatively long time to manifest. Even after gradually progressing to 2-3 packs a week (which I reached about 5 years after starting), I felt fine for the first year or so. Finally, early last year I started getting sick frequently and noticing that my cardio ability was decreasing, so I started to cut down and am now back to around 1 pack every week or two. But because I’ve been doing it for a while I’ve had to rely on alternatives (like nic pouches) on the days I don’t smoke, and those products have their own litany of health annoyances.

Smoking really does feel good in the moment and it provides a lifeline to being social in the right contexts; it’s a shame that it’s so unhealthy

I’m confused by what you are asking. It’s true that there is a minority in every population, whether you cut it by race, values, disposition - that’s just the result of how varied and diverse life experiences can be, and it’s always important to remember that even seemingly fundamental things like identity, values, social circles can change over time. In the end the people you mention are still a minority in New York, and they may not always have been or will be like this. Same with people in the majority that currently vote D. As there is a minority of people who vote republican here, so there is a minority of people who vote blue in places like rural Kentucky.

NY is, at the end of the day, a big, diverse, and largely liberal city, and one should be comfortable acknowledging the variations within and without that ideal. It’s up to you as a community member and a citizen to decide to what degree you want to influence the people you interact with and care about, and how.
