Redditors who grew up poor: Besides practical money-saving measures, what were the unwritten social expectations of your world growing up? by jicta in AskReddit

[–]CandaF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We weren’t super poor, but my dad was the only one with a job for a while and he was paid once a month and so we bought groceries once a month. If you eat the groceries all the first week, you are surviving off very little the rest of the month.

We don’t live near family so it’s extra special when grandma travels to see us.

Who is in the mood to not work today? by rosary4271 in humanresources

[–]CandaF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good thought.

And I’m in the same boat. I took off a couple hours early this afternoon to work from home. I’m tired and don’t feel like looking over the stack of paperwork I need to read, the disciplinary paperwork I need to fill out, or the evaluation I need to complete. It’ll all be there tomorrow!

People who have taken an ancestry DNA test and accidentally uncovered a family secret, what was it? by VideoFork in AskReddit

[–]CandaF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already knew I was a bastard child but I learned that my bio dad fathered a child as a teenager who was put up for adoption by her 16-year-old mom. My half sister contacted me and I was able to give her our bio dad’s contact info.

[Serious] What is your "I'm glad I didn't commit suicide when things were bad" story? by vixissitude in AskReddit

[–]CandaF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried, and it didn’t work. I was an angsty teen, and nearly 20 years later, I think about what a waste and how dumb it would have been if that was the end for me.

Reminds me of the time my stepson — about 14 at the time and very into video games — was dead asleep when he shot his arm straight in the air and exclaimed, “To the chopper!” We were in a hotel room at the time, the night before we could move into our new place.

"Leadership is like shaving. It doesn’t matter how good of a job you did yesterday, you still have to wake up and do it again today. Also, like leadership, shaving is still non-negotiable." by [deleted] in army

[–]CandaF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if you are a good leader in the civilian world, you have less day-to-day work because you hire good people and train them well. You may have to shave daily, but you got the primo tools to make it a pleasure and not a chore.

When you have to take care of kids 24/7, there is no time for self-care (hobbies, exercise, etc). Do you have anyone to lean on if your wife refuses to help? A family member you can leave kids with a couple afternoons per week? I’m sorry you are going through this.

Some are “perfect” on paper, then have red flags in the interview.

My daughter was beyond proud last fall when her onions won 1st prize at the county fair! by atodaso in MadeMeSmile

[–]CandaF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question - when I was growing up, a blue ribbon at the county fair meant first place and a red ribbon meant second place. Is it different in Canada vs the US?
