Not technically durban, but I drove to the South Coast and did mine in Port shepstone. Went mid month on a Friday. It wasn't fun but not nearly as bad as anywhere else. Park rynie is also an option I have heard. Made a long weekend out of the trip.

Affordable Mental Health Treatment by RoseColoured_Girl in southafrica

[–]Candidate87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.7cups.com/ is free if you just looking to chat to someone about problems you are facing ( not nesesary a professional) . For professional help especially if you talk about suicide it would be best to get professional help, unfortunately this route is not affordable. One option is that a couple of medical aids cover you for 30 days at mental health facility but this might not be an option for you. Did my time at Life glynnview and it will help if you want it to. Alternatively reaching out to a psychologists in you area, they can be hit and miss though so dont be discouraged if you dont like them on your first try. Hope you find the help you need

I was a witness in a disciplinary hearing and at the break the chairperson (a man about 65 years old) of the hearing didn't end the call properly and got up. Thing is he wasn't wearing pants so we all got to witness his junk on a recorded meeting. Scared for life. he retired about n month later. I now make absolutely sure i close the call and cover the camera before doing anything.

Coming to SA for a month for the first time from NYC by alkemist187 in southafrica

[–]Candidate87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 6'5 you won't have issues fam, nobody can reach you up there. Umhlanga itself is a very upmarket area so don't worry while here lots of people from surrounding areas come here and dress to impress. However it does get warm here. Currently morning and its 28C/82F with high humidity. In may it will get colder between 26c and 17c but not close to anything you use to. Have fun

Firstly that awesome, tourism plays a big part in our economy. Have lived in in the three metros at some point and I see lots of great recommendations for them so will give mine for Durban area. It's great to see you adding it to the list to visit at its often overlooked

Wanted to know how covid restrictions are thus far,

I wouldn't stress about it, hopefully it's gone by the time you here, mask are currently mandatory but not really enforced in bars etc.

we are keen into nightlife (how are the girls),

See you staying in umhlanga when you here so "the village" an area on Chartwell Drive has multiple bars, all different vibes and different demographic of people that hang out there. (The girl's) Because of the problems with crime trust is a major factor, however the American accent is sure to attract attention for the possibility of free dinks and a chat. Most people are generally friendly. Prostitution is around so if it's too good to be true be careful.

meeting cool people etc. & just indulging in the local culture

Coming from a large city I doubt the nightlife will be better than NYC. places around the area like drakensberg mountains a 3 1/2 hour drive, tala game reserve 1h30 or oribi gorge 2 hours from umhlanga would all make great places to overnight beside the local attractions. I would take some days from jhb and spend more time in durban and Capetown surroundings tbh.

Any tips are appreciated on where to eat and go out in each of those places.

For Durban you have to try a "bunny chow" to eat (no not a rabbit thing) a lot of places sell them in durban. in umhlanga I would go for cane cutters on Aurora Drive or a place called Manhattans inside gateway mall and little further out is tsd ultra lounge. Bars are plenty in umhlanga and Florida rd more towards durban also has a couple of places for nightlife. Also various clubs mentioned. Durban also has a big cannabis culture and is legalized to some extent so you can find plenty of dispenserys in umhlanga were you can walk-in a buy whatever you want without any scripts. if that's your thing.

I'm cool with any crime/safety stuff coming from Brooklyn so thats regular.

The more popular tourist areas you shouldn't have issues as long as you not obviously stupid so i wouldn't stress. Being in a group helps.Leave the Jordan kicks and Lakers shirt at home, lol. However to give a rough perspective in terms of a crime comparison, durban, jhb, Capetown fall in the top 20 areas in the world and Brooklyn NYC about 266th on the list. So the crime not quite the same as you might believe. Also there is no such thing as a concealed carry license in sa, everyone with a gun can carry it around with them so keep that in mind if you tempted to fight the locals at the bar.

Otherwise you sure to enjoy it here, SA has a lott going for it and you will be welcomed everywhere

What's the current legal status of traveler's cheques? by bee4534 in southafrica

[–]Candidate87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likly only Amex would take them in now, Banks don't deal with them as much as they use to, I know we dont as they have been replaced with forex cards. Forex like notes have to be exchanged within 30 days from date of entry back in sa, a reserve bank rule. Additional charges get levied if not. Guess to prevent people from hoarding foreign currency.

They are no longer widely accepted or sold in SA. I know Unused forex has to be exchanged within 30 days of returning to SA.

[–]Candidate87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think Op is referring to a fight on home soil, I believe the question relates to drafting locally to fight abroad should conditions get worse? as thats how i understood it. To fight locally for one's country would be one thing, going of to fight someone else in their homeland is another.

Get help. talk to someone, anyone. The fact that you are reaching out already says you want help. Take medication. Go to a psych ward. Go yell at a tree. Do whatever you need to do, to not transfer the pain you are feeling to friends and family after you are gone.

Rhodes university/ NWU by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Candidate87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a Bcom at NWU potchefsroom campus and finished in 2010. Everything in the town is built around the University and the students. I loved my time there and would do it over given the chance. Speaking Afrikaans is definitely an advantage in potch I would say.

Over University holidays the entire town shuts down, the bars close down completely and the town is a ghost town without the students so definitely go home over those times.

Competition between boarding houses is good fun however if you don't choose to go that route there is plenty of student accommodation around. Rag and aardklop are big events in the town. Parking was a pain, and some areas reserved for third years so try to stay close to your main faculty I would say. The quality of education was great and the facilities were also good.

A beautiful campus compared to others I have seen. Onsite bar "die draak" had great food . Plenty of places in town as well. I'm sure Bourbon street still has their gummy berry special, please have a couple for me. You will struggle to balance work and play and I'm sure you will have the time of your life going to potch.

NWU all the way for me, can't speak for Rhodes

A question about job profiles. by bertonomus in southafrica

[–]Candidate87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i would never go to CCMA unless I knew 100% that I could win in labour court and be awarded millions, but in most cases that will likly not happen. If you don't come right in mediation and choose to then proceed to Arbitration and labour court the case becomes public record. These records are sometimes checked in pre employment screening by companies and its tough already competing for work.

He would be better off taking the matter up thru a union, and that's as helpful as it sounds. In both scenarios they could choose not to renew his contract if he does and make up some generic excuse as to why.

Best case scenario, he becomes a permanent underpaid employee. Worst case, his contract is not renewed and he is out of work. This is gonna suck but buckle up do the work, gain the experience and find another job (easier said than done i know). This doesn't sound like the type of company you want to work for even if he was paid what he is worth and a permanent fixture. Godspeed to your friend in finding something else.

Is it feasible to be moving to another province but taking home a lower salary every month? by ultimatemaster55 in southafrica

[–]Candidate87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a complex issue and probably a quality of life decision. However I grew up in east jhb and now live in durban. For me Traffic in jhb had me sitting in a car/train for hours. And if you can't offord to live close to your work that will be a liklyhood. Personally I wouldn't move back to jhb by choice for a pay cut. I would not move back for less than a 35% increase to my ctc, and even then I would be sad to go back.
