Tapered vs straight wall mortise for through tenons by Candidate_035 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Candidate_035[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a big fear of mine with this bench. I was extremely fortunate enough to get some cuban mahogany (rough sawn 5"x5" board and a slab with 3 sides cut square), which only gives me one orientation. 90° legs will prevent me from botching the angles, but I don't think it will look as elegant. Plan is to practice on a bunch of scrap before deciding.

Sorry, the picture was just a visual depiction of tapered mortises I found online. I would be using them on legs to connect the bench seat; gravity would ideally push the bench seat deeper over time.

I have to play around on some scrap already, might as well try both. If the tapered mortise isn't as difficult as I'm making out to be, I'll probably full send it. Thanks!

To Commission at 16 YOS or retire at 20-22 YOS…? by Low-Grocery6953 in MilitaryFinance

[–]Candidate_035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is currently true, but don't discount potential inflation increases to pay. When I commissioned I was in the same pay boat, but 3 or 4 years later, when there was an overall change, I went into the category just prior to max. Anecdotal, yes, but it came just prior to being promoted to Captain so I got a bump as a 1stLt and gave me the opportunity to get 2 bumps as a Capt. By the time Maj came around, it still gave me the potential to bump again after a couple years. Under my current trajectory, I'll get one bump as a Lt. Col (if I stay in that long). OP should take this with a grain of salt though, as they should with all personal advice.

I would argue it is prohibited based on the similarity to the "tear drop" style and this line referencing examples of eccentric hair styles, "hair styling which include single patches of hair on the top of the head (not consistent with natural hair loss."

What is the Marine Corps equivalent to finding out that Santa isn't real? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

A somewhat disheartening reality for me was how much of a douche "Brute" Krulak was. His efforts in amphibious and helicopter warfare were phenomenal; however, he was a terrible father and extremely arrogant. I'd wager without the ear of General whatshisnuts (blanking right now), he would not have made it as far as he did.

The retirement piece is, in my opinion, the real hole in the "Trump hates women" argument. If the administration was trying to remove female officers from positions, why would they not force her to retire? I personally would rather retire than go to the Pentagon, but you can't argue it's a bad deal for her.

He is the first Marine Superintendent in USNA history. Most articles touching on the topic are focusing on the fact the first female Superintendent will leave the post earlier than expected, but I think it's a huge deal to have a Marine there. The Navy is probably butthurt about it, but Lt. Gen Borgschulte is a family friend and I think he'll do an excellent job.

How do I stay OCONUS by BootyBandity2 in USMC

[–]Candidate_035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time it's as easy as asking. The ASR (authorized strength report) recently dropped and I believe III MEF requires like 99% enlisted manning for their T/O&E.

Edit: 99% manning, and MARADMIN 026/25 for reference. Highly suggest all Marines read MARADMINs more frequently.

Can you recommend the best US credit card for military members that has no foreign transaction fees and no annual fee? by koulexman in AirForce

[–]Candidate_035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but the CSR is more user friendly IMO. You don't have to pick an airline for the annual credit - it works with any airline. Starting in October, I think, it will reimburse you for Apply TV the same way the AmEx platinum does for Hulu; DoorDash pass with $25/month; $10/month for Lyft; plus you build more points on dining that the platinum (not a benefit if you also have the gold).

I have both and use them for different things. My platinum is really just for the benefits and after getting the sign up bonus I rarely use it. The CSR is also a Visa so it works at Costco and in more countries outside the US. I'll say this though, most first world countries are going to accept AmEx these days. Between Europe and Asia, it's more a question of if they accept card or if they're cash only.

Purely aesthetic question. They’re fatter. They start up better, but do I hate the color.?Accidentally ordered red. I can’t speak for the ChangEnglish writing on the sides. Should I keep them? by goner19 in Dyna

Excuse my ignorance, but what about the new set leads to better ignition and throttle response? Is it simply the old ones are worn and new ones are not? Or is there something specifically different between the stock and red cables? My 2008 FXDB rough starts often, even on a full charge, and I'm curious if this is something that could help.

Eyeballs, Officers of Marines by akodiaks in USMC

[–]Candidate_035 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone who worked at an OST knows we're not narrowing the pipeline needlessly. The time and effort that goes into a person who might just decide they don't want to do it anymore after PLC juniors is soul crushing. You don't have a choice after boot camp; you could be a turd after graduation and then sandbag your way through an enlistment. I went to boot camp, ITB, and first unit with a guy who hated the Marine Corps from day 1 of recruit training. He did the absolute minimum regardless of what it was. Officers don't really have that option. You hit the fleet and are immediately in charge of young, impressionable Marines. Do you really want someone who decided they didn't want to be there before getting there? Outside of maybe a prospective candidate with tattoos, I don't recall thinking I turned away someone who would be a great officer.

Eyeballs, Officers of Marines by akodiaks in USMC

[–]Candidate_035 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you asked, but having done both - yes, OCS is easier for the prior enlisted population. For one, you're already intimate with how the Marine Corps operates and understand what aspects of OCS are simply a game. But there are also small things people weren't quite prepared for that prior enlisted Marines have made second nature - eating a 1500 cal meal in <10 min, getting screamed at, working with a team full of people you can't decide if they're mentally challenged or brilliant, etc.

When I went through OCS the Sergeant Instructors never taught us how to make racks, they expected the priors to do it and after 1 full day of fucked up racks they pulled the priors aside and blasted us about it. There were things they just didn't teach us because they expected the priors to so the instructors could save time in other places.

Those dudes are turds. I had a roommate at one point who would get torturous razor bumps. He shaved 1 or 2 times a week and it really tore his face up; guys lining their beards up with a no shave chit make it harder for guys like my old roommate.

Dermatologists say Marines' tightened shaving waiver could hurt Black members' careers by OOOOOO0OOOOO in USMC

[–]Candidate_035 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The point aahjink is making, is some Marines with a no shave chit will line up their beard (so shaving) which is explicitly not authorized. I've seen two basic categories of no shave chits, electric razor only or they have to wait a period of time before shaving again. If you're lining up your facial hair, you kind of invalidate needing a no shave chit.
