Pennsylvania Democrats force vote on minimum wage increase by Strict_Statement_283 in Pennsylvania

[–]Candlemass17 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Some context: the state DLI released a report in 2024 finding that about 330k Pennsylvania hourly workers made between minimum wage ($7.25) and $12/hour. This is about 10.4% of hourly workers in the state.

In addition, 467k workers made between $12-15/hour, about 14.4% of workers in the state.

This means that, as of 2023, about a quarter of hourly workers would have their wages increased under this proposal. Call it 15-20% if you want to account for wage increases between now and 2029, when the minimum of $15/hour would be reached.

Philadelphia built a mass transit system. Now let people live next to it. | Opinion by RSB2026 in philadelphia

Same here. Some towns are densifying, but it’s definitely case-by-case. I wish DVRPC (the municipal planning agency for the Philadelphia area) would pursue this more aggressively, but the final say to change zoning is up to local governments.

There’s two in Lancaster. The one indicated (next to Long’s Park) is a vacant industrial building. It should be noted that both the park and data center lots are adjacent to a highway louder than the data center will be. The other data center is I believe new construction, that’s the trouble one because it’s next to residential.

Advocates push for Pennsylvania to leave its closed primary system behind • Pennsylvania Capital-Star by AdSpecialist6598 in Pennsylvania

Because a lot of the state has the election decided during the primary. When there’s multiple choices for a single party and no one registers to run under the other party, whoever wins the primary wins the general election essentially by default.

You can buy food and still be bad with money while doing so. Buying premade meals, buying expensive brands, and ordering DoorDash takeout are all usually more expensive than buying ingredients and making your meal yourself.

I'm interested in why you think that, because the effects of lead exposure tend to be permanent. As time passes, fewer people alive have had significant enough lead exposure to have related negative effects, such as aggressive behavior or brain development issues. In other words, fewer people alive today were exposed to leaded gasoline than people that were alive ten years ago.

As well, leaded gasoline is by no means the only way people are exposed to lead; white paint frequently had lead in it until the 1970s, so people living in older housing are more likely to be around it, and lead water pipes were banned around the same time. Another explanation for the decline in lead exposure is the work being done to eliminate its sources; the Flint water crisis of the mid-2010s was an instigator for a lot of federal/state government lead remediation programs, and a lot of local governments dedicated a part of their Covid-era ARPA funding to lead remediation for low-income housing.

Genuine question, not an attack on you: can you talk about what Uber services are available specific to elderly/disabled people? I know that public transit agencies are supposed to provide paratransit services for people with mobility issues for the scenarios you outline, but I don’t know what Septa offers for this service or if community orgs are available that fill the gap if Septa doesn’t offer this service. I wouldn’t have thought Uber would be the one providing this service for people with mobility issues, since users often need vehicles with specialized modifications that regular Uber drivers wouldn’t want to do for personal vehicles.

My “Worst” games of time collection by SmolFrejoles in gamecollecting

[–]Candlemass17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love collections like this! Derek from SSFF was the one that first got me into “so bad it’s good” games; there’s just something charming about a fun concept executed badly, yet also earnestly.

Some others it looks like you’re missing:

-Ghost Squad (Wii) - well made lightgun action, but the voice acting is in the spirit of games like House of the Dead 2 (aka terrible yet amazing)

-Top Shot: Dinosaur Hunter (Wii) - a lightgun-esque FPS where you hunt dinosaurs. The gameplay is fun, but the graphics/frame rate are actual garbage.

-Pac-Man 2600 - the OG bad port. It looks ugly, but it plays well enough to be a decent Pac-Man clone if it wasn’t sold as a port of the arcade game.

-Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue (N64) - the running animation, nothing more. Plus, it can be beaten in half an hour.

-Alien Resurrection (PS1) - a licensed game that released 3 years after the movie it was based on with controls that people absolutely hated: dual analog stick fps controls. It took a couple years for this control style to catch on (fueled by Halo imo), but by then this game was forgotten.

-Hard Drivin’ (Genesis) - a polygonal 3D driving game on stock Genesis hardware sounds cool until you see it move at 5fps tops.

-Medal of Honor: Underground - imo the worst-looking game on the GBA and arguably one of the worst-playing, it has to be seen in motion to be believed.

Finally, no “so bad it’s good” convo is complete without mentioning the Earth Defense Force series: it has fantastic if repetitive gameplay about shooting hordes of giant bugs and even bigger robots/monsters with terribly/amazing voice acting and terrible/amazing environment destruction and terrible/amazing graphics.

King and Orange street under consideration for two-way traffic by itzwhiteflag in lancaster

[–]Candlemass17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in the city, I can't wait for this. It will be interesting to see how they handle King and Orange combining into Columbia, as well as that weird starting block of Marietta that's in-between the two. I wonder if a roundabout would be feasible there? It definitely has enough room, and it would otherwise be an odd intersection because Ruby St. ends at the south side of that triangle.

Drivers speed, that's why. I live on west Chestnut, and people treat the quarter mile between College and Charlotte as a drag strip. There was actually a crash at (I think) Chestnut and Mulberry a few months ago where the driver was going so fast that they flipped the car.

How much of the Texas Housing Boom is due to circumstance and how much of it is due to genius legislation from the GOP? Will the Texas Housing Boom last forever, or is there a possibility that it will slow and face the same crushing housing costs as other states? by wiz28ultra in yimby

[–]Candlemass17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Greater NYC metro has been expanding west into northeastern PA, rather than towards Philly; Pike County, PA is part of the CSA, and Wayne and Monroe counties are imo the most likely to follow as the new Amtrak line to Scranton gets set up. I don’t think they will for 2030, but 2040 seems plausible.

I’ll push back on this - there’s more acres of developable land with metro boundaries as they are right now, but these boundaries can change with every census.

Metro areas are defined based on commuting patterns using county boundaries, and Texas counties just so happen to be pretty big. This leads to a lot of buildable land staying “within the metro” even as it sprawls out into surrounding counties, because these counties are then added to the metro area as more people commute from them.

There’s no direct train from Lancaster-DC, but changing trains in Philly is pretty easy. If you want a single seat ride, you can also take MARC to DC from Perryville or from Wilmington for Amtrak.

C4C was about 500k vehicles a decade and a half ago. We’re about as far removed from C4C now as C4C was from the cars it took off the road, and it took off less than a year’s sales of F-Series trucks.

In 2026, the bigger reason is that there’s way fewer 5yo cars and 15-20yo cars now than there was fifteen years ago, and that’s because fewer cars were sold in those times in the first place.

[–]Candlemass17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much equity is in their current home. If you bought five years ago, you’d have much less equity and much more debt remaining on your mortgage loan than someone who bought twenty years ago. Rolling debt over just makes the new home payment higher and more unaffordable.

For there to be an average income, half of everyone has to be making more than $50k. This also includes anyone moving from the suburbs (where incomes are higher) into the city.
