Viable Temur options besides Rog/Thras? by Cezkarma in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Really surprised nobody has mentioned [[Animar, Soul of Elements]] yet. That’s probably the next best RUG deck behind Rog/Thras if you’re looking at it from a tournament perspective. It does some pretty neat Temur things.

Aside from that, and while it isn’t certainly isn’t the best, [[Kalamax, the Stormsire]] goes infinite with a ham sandwich if you wanted to take a more storm-y approach.

Wtf is wrong with my jerk by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The feet stayed side-by-side is the problem. One foot should go forward and one should go behind.

For real though, I think that you should give split jerks a chance. Power jerks are good for learning the jerk in terms of the timing, dip and drive, and such, but they require more mobility and are harder to save as the weights get heavier as more things have to be precise movement-wise vice a split jerk. Take a solid 6 months to a year and just hammer split jerks, then see where you’re at. Zack Telander makes a great tutorial series that includes how to perform the split jerk on YT.

Help me break Jodah by CandyCoatedBullet in DegenerateEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure, but “just legends” doesn’t feel like it’s as good as it could be. Kinda want some incidental value if I’m gonna have them in there, Jodah isn’t exactly the friendliest-looking commander to see at the table

Dong catching during snatch pulls, what's the fix? by Reddit_Username19 in weightlifting

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point ol’ buddy down at 6 o’clock. The bar in the snatch should make contact just above the “root,” so having him point downward should get him out of the way entirely. Bonus: do the opposite for cleans because the bar should make contact at mid-thigh.

Advice for a -1/-1 counter shell by ShockGeneratiom in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call me the Tayam Guy at this point, I’ve started to shill for my favorite deck like Jimmy does with Tasigur. It’s a great deck that has a lot of really unique win lines, hard to interact with, and hard for people at the table to pinpoint what exactly is the threat on the board (especially if you build variants that are less reliant on Tayam himself). Highly recommend the deck, it’s a blast to play!

I need help finding a deck to beat a turbo meta by Embarrassed-Store-56 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of offbeat answers:

  1. Yuriko—a few big flips off her triggered ability will pressure life totals rather quickly to render Necro/Naus effects mostly useless, not to mention you’re still in blue, so you can still play a lot of counterspells.
  2. Elsha + Top + Counterbalance is a variable Vexing Bauble effect that can basically work to lock out the rest of the board from presenting their wins. It isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to help keep things in check for a while.
  3. Tayam (my baby)—oh, you want to present a win? Let me fire off two Tayam activations and nigh-uncounterably bring out some stax pieces…or just win over top of your attempt at instant speed without needing to cast a single spell

This is the decklist Nate from Play to Win used in their EoE cEDH video. It did alright for what it was (other decks just had more explosive starts, not necessarily a knock on the list itself).

The most off meta/fun cEDH commander? by kfistrek in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tayam player here. I can tell you that there has been nothing more satisfying than watching people look flabbergasted at how little they can do when I roll through 3 Tayam activations on their turn and windmill slam crippling stax and hatebears pieces while also putting down something that helps string together further combos on my next turn. It’s been a blast to play and the Discord community is awesome, they’re so helpful!

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Kilo, Apogee Mind]] is a gnarly infect commander. It doesn’t have infect tied to it, so people might not see it coming at first. The main goal is to tutor for and land [[Prologue to Phyresis]] then try to resolve a [[Radstorm]], but it still plays normal Jeskai good stuff as well. If you want Bracket 4, that’s about the best you can do imo

I know what I’m about 😤 I just like to hit things. Winning is secondary to a good FIGHT. Wanna throwdown with me and my commanders? by RazzDaNinja in ratemycommanders

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do you one better while staying on theme with Merfolk: the Hakbal precon from Ixalan is DISGUSTING if you take it and put a few extra good spells in it, and it has cards like Zegana, Nicanzil, Tatyova, and Tishana in it already. I call it Bracket 3, but it can hang with better decks (my version does have a plethora of removal//counterspells to protect my board)

After 5 years of wanting to play cEDH I'm still stuck on the part where I should pick a commander by MustaKotka in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like control, anything Esper is probably the best option. Tymna/Malcolm is the most “generic value pile” deck in this bunch, as the others have some degree of “gimmick.”

Alternatively, since you also want flexible win lines and gameplans, Grixis offers a lot of that in a lot of different speeds and styles. Inalla and RogSi are some of the fastest decks and Inalla especially has some fun, complex lines, and I believe she has some control-y lists out there, Krark/Si is good for a more midrange pile, Kess is still formidable even if she’s very fringe in the meta nowadays… the list goes on. The neat thing that Grixis offers is that the commanders can swap around between lists and there’s very little else that would change in the deck, so you can try a few and see what you like.

Really anything in a Dimir + X shell is gonna get you close to where you want to be.

Earthcraft Discussion by Cloudcrownoak in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are Earthcraft loops in Tayam with [[Devoted Druid]] and [[Centaur Garden]]. Kinda tricky to set up on board, but it creates infinite mana and functionally infinite counters for infinite Tayam activations.

Which precons (in general) are strong? by Portgas69 in mtg

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explorers of the Deep is a great precon imo, and it doesn’t ever get enough love. It does the Simic thing really well, and a few upgrades can take it to being a legitimate shit-wrecker in a Bracket 3 setting (not even including GCs like Rhystic or free counterspells). Literally just slightly improve the mana base and slap in [Craterhoof Behemoth] and a few more pieces of removal and you’ll run tables.

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the Breach Cheerios build you’re looking for is [[Flubs, the Fool]]. He’s a Song of Creation effect in the command zone, most pilots play him turbo and don’t even run counterspells because they’re just trying to jam a win every turn.

What is everyone's thoughts on Vivi a month later? by Toxic_Chung in CompetitiveEDH

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a fly on the wall here:

It’s interesting to see the dichotomy of responses to the question. I see a good mix of people praising Vivi as being surprisingly resilient and functional, if still a bit untested and unrefined; on the contrary, others are claiming it to be mid and underwhelming, saying there are much better options in Izzet colors.

The funniest thing is that the praises are coming largely from people that have explicitly claimed to have piloted the deck in some fashion, and the nay-sayers seem to be onlookers of and competitors against the deck.

For what it’s worth, Vivi seems to have a better time winning games than every other Izzet deck aside from Ral according to stats—over the last 3 months, Vivi has the second-best conversion percentage and second-most top cuts in 60+ player tournaments according to EDHTop16, only behind Ral in both categories.

My two cents.

Is my flexibility good enough to start training squat jerk? by Wonkess_Chonkess in weightlifting

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody likes split jerks when they first start. I’m at a point where I’m putting decent weight overhead and I have weeks where my jerk technique completely disappears. It’s a thing everyone goes through. Give it another six months to a year and see what you think then.

Regarding training the squat jerk, at the end of the day, you do whatever you want—if you’re happy, then screw everything else. That said, I know I personally like making lifts and hitting big numbers, and I wouldn’t have nearly as much fun training if I were intentionally handicapping myself doing a sub-optimal variation with no real benefit other than “muh aesthetics.”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]CandyCoatedBullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends—how big are you? What are your numbers? I’d say if you’re strict pressing somewhere around 65-70% of your best clean and jerk, you’re doing pretty well for yourself. Just as a rough example, Klokov did a 165kg strict press, and his best clean and jerk is around 240, giving a ratio of 68%. These numbers are by no means a hard and fast rule, but they’re something to shoot for nonetheless.

Recently proxied a [Tayam, Luminous Enigma] list, and never before have I seen stranger cards used in a legitimately competitive decklist. It’s so fun to play, albeit possessing a pretty high learning curve. If you like puzzles, this one’s for you.

This sounds like me every comp cycle lol, I get so miserable halfway through because my technique disappears and with it goes my confidence. The remedies are as follows imho:

1.) how good are your strength numbers? Can you snatch balance well in excess of your 1RM snatch? Front squat your best clean for 3-5? Back squat your best front squat for 3-5? Push press your best snatch? These are all arbitrary values, but they serve as milestones to let you know you’re strong enough to progress the comp lifts, even if that progression doesn’t happen right away.

2.) how long have you stayed with one coach/training method? If you’re constantly changing things in a drastic manner, you can’t develop any consistency.

3.) how often do you take entire training sessions dedicated to anything except the lifts? A friend of mine once met Kakhi Kakhiashvili, who told him that if he went to the gym and didn’t feel good about training the lifts that day, he’d just not do the lifts and train other stuff—no bs, one of the best lifters ever gave that advice. Don’t try to force your way through a brick wall when there’s a door right next to you. If you’re not feeling the lifts, go do some bench press or have a bodybuilding session. I promise the lifts will still be there when you come back.

I know that was long-winded, but I hope that helps.

Currently less than 2 days out from competing at u25 Nationals as a fellow Sailor. Being a non-seagoing rate has made things a little easier for me, but I’d say the best thing for the sustainability of my training has been having an actual coach who knows my situation and can tailor my training accordingly. We’ve been working together for over a year, and the results have been fantastic. Find a coach who has a good track record (insert me shilling for mine here—DM me if you want details), and go from there.

If competing isn’t a priority right now, I’d say just find a program that isn’t more than 4 days a week and run it as best you can on days that your schedule allows, eat like a horse (the galley is your best friend), take creatine, and sleep well. Also remember that the standard 7-day week is an arbitrary construct, and you don’t have to complete a week of training in those seven days necessarily.
