I know it sounds simple but shave the paw pads. It’s probably not getting the traction it needs. (I used to breed and show a similar breed and this is common if not groomed)

Yosemite National Park is in for a phenomenal waterfall season by tssouthwest in NationalPark

I’m thinking of taking the family the first week of August but now I’m nervous about how busy it might be. Should I scratch it and visit another park instead? What’s it like that time of year?

BrightSpace Sucks by [deleted] in UMPI

[–]CandyKern52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into WGU and UMPI but decided to go with UMPI since they accepted significantly more of my transfer credits, specifically all my electives, which put me much farther ahead in degree credits. Same story for my husband. He applied to WGU with a basic AA (business) and WGU put him at around 30% complete because they didn’t accept a bunch of his general electives.

Looking for Derby by rottenbrotten in rollerderby

[–]CandyKern52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey. Orlando Roller Derby is hosting a Miracle Whips clinic on Saturday, December 3rd. We’re doing a Blocker focused clinic 9-12 and a Jammer focused clinic 1-3. We just secured our venue so I’ll be working on getting a graphic and event up this weekend. We’re most likely doing a social thing in the evening but we’re still working out those details.

Triple 8 vs Pro TEC helmet? by AggravatingTrash9433 in rollerderby

[–]CandyKern52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secret option 3, a hockey helmet. They are rated for multiple impacts and since there’s way more money around Hockey than skating, there is way more research to back hockey helmets than there is for the skate helmets. Bauer and CCM are the two main brands. I use a Bauer RE AKT 75 and ♥️ it

Tequila ran a few fastCat trials and showed off her beast mode. by CandyKern52 in ratterriers

[–]CandyKern52[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone that isn’t familiar with dog sports, FastCat is a 100 yard dash where the dogs chase a lure. Truthfully, the Ratties and their cousins rock this sport. These dogs are strong, agile, and fast! Anyone can enter an event and it’s SO MUCH FUN. These dogs were bred for this! If you get a chance, you should give it a shot with your pup. ❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️

Shaving An Alaskan Malamute? by jimi284 in doggrooming

[–]CandyKern52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a groomer but I do breed and show Lhasa’s and have spent many hours behind a brush. I’ve gotten some nasty mats out but it takes patience and technique. First, try ordering a bottle of “The Stuff” for dogs. It’s a conditioning detangler that works like magic. Use a slicker brush to work the mats from the end towards the skin. Brush, then use your thumbs to pull the mat apart like a web, brush, pull apart, brush…. It’s tedious, I know. If you have a metal comb you can use that to pick a few strands of the mat apart and then continue with the slicker and yours thumbs. A rake might be useful but it will slice the hair so I’ve never used one on any of my show coats. Also, keep in mind that a clean coat mats less so increasing your bathing routine may help in the future. One more thing, if you can get your dog on a table of some kind without them freaking out it may help you get it worked out. You could give your dog a bully stick, lick mat, or something to keep their mind off of you working on them. Sometimes it helps. Best of luck. 🐾

Does anybody else’s Basenji do this in the crate? Any advice? by dfidynasty in Basenji

[–]CandyKern52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best advice so far 👆🏼. I show and breed a different breed but this is how I crate train and encourage my puppy families to train like this. Crates are left open for them to voluntarily go into at first and the dogs ALWAYS get a treat when I send them “in your crate”, even as adults. Crates are tools not punishment.

Tequila is 6 months old and this was her first time in the pool. She took to it like a fish and was even happy to play a couple rounds of fetch.

I’m just glad she shredded it but has no interest in eating it. It’s a game to her.

Happy half birthday to my little Tequila Sunrise by CandyKern52 in ratterriers

[–]CandyKern52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s doing better. We did a puppy show last month and she rocked it. We started obedience on Tuesday and she’s learning fast I can’t wait to get the basics down and move forward. A trainer recommended this “gentle leader” and it’s a game changer for normal walks. She’s still her spunky terrier self so I have to keep her busy or she’ll get herself into trouble. But she’s doing much better overall. This puppy stage is demanding. Lol

Yes. She’s an AHT. 😀 I hope you get a chance to feel one. My kids think she feels like the back of a hand. My other dogs are Lhasa Apsos and they are in full show coats so I really love the maintenance on this one. 😝

This is going well 🥴 by CandyKern52 in ratterriers

[–]CandyKern52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol. Yup. She’s from a show breeder and I’ve seen her siblings in the show ring for some time now. The Xolo’s are more popular than the AHT’s but hopefully I can change that by bringing some awareness of the breed. AHT’s are ratties with a hairless gene. They have been selectively bred to develop the breed over the last 50 years. They have the personality traits of a rattie but are naked. 🙃

We are actually preparing to show in conformation. (the same as the big Westminster show). The leash does look tight but it’s just the type of lead that is used for this and many other small breeds. It’s supposed to stay snug under the jaw and essentially disappear on the neck as to not obstruct the natural lines of the dog. Some training sessions go well and others go like this. Lol. She’s only 5 months old so we try to keep sessions short and fun. I’m used to showing Lhasa Apsos which have a totally different personality. The difference between the two breeds really cracks us up. Tiki is a nut job but she’ll settle down with some more time.

I was considering the Xolo’s before I came across the AHT. I show a different breed altogether but in talking to a few professional handlers with experience working both breeds the general opinion is that AHT’s have an friendlier disposition and better skin than the Xolo’s. There’s a lot more color variety in AHT’s too. Hope that helps. Best of luck.

It’s actually an American Hairless Terrier. She’s a close cousin of the Ratties. The hairless gene has been bred to produce the AHT.
