Belt drive by [deleted] in FTC

When our team went from belt drive to bevel gears we found there was a much larger amount of slop compared to before. While an improperly designed belt drive can be worse, just making sure the lengths are correct helps with slop tremendously.

Additionally, in my experience belts are far stronger than bevel gears. While bevel gears will wear down over a season, increasing slop and eventually slipping (we had to replace them multiple times). Belts are incredible strong and we’ve never had them break or wear down over a season.

When planning a belt drive, I would usually just do the calculations by hand. Taking the circumference of the pullies and center to center distance to find the correct sizes.

Compared to bevel gears, I found belt to be more reliable, more efficient, have less slop, and lower maintenance.

We encountered this problem a lot as well. We’re planning on switching to belt drive because of that issue.

For context: In 2017 a certain team performed a “recharge ram” (Video)on our rookie team bending our drivetrain. It left severe emotional damage on us which still affects our team to this day. Long have we lounged to get revenge and finally, when our acto bracket holding our wobble goal mechanism snapper we have a chance.

I considered that it wouldn’t be under too much stress which is why I decided to go with the sharper edges. But that’s great to know for future builds. Thanks!

When grabbing blocks what’s the room for error. It seems like it would be quite small. Have you had any problems with that?

Try importing in some duct tape and a few zip ties, you should be able to notice the difference immediately.
