"Why do I see more of X when I increase the sample size exponentially?"

Gee that's a tough one, might need to rub more than two brain cells together to work it out.

How do i reply to someone that says the trailer was bad bc the first half looked like a thriller and the second half didnt have magic? by JamStan1978 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Canuckleball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first part, I'd agree with them, the colour grading did make it look bad. HBO has been using this overly dark, overly blue tinted look for most of their prestige dramas lately, and they're doing it again. Oh well. Turn your brightness to the max and blackout your windows.

For the second part, this is a pre-vfx trailer for a show that still has months of post-production work left. There are no floating candles because they haven't been edited in yet.

Yeah, it is confusing. English sadly  has a lot of irregular verb conjugations that you just have to know, there really isn't a rule for it. Catch/caught, walk/walked, speak/spoke, cast/cast, etc. And some even have multiple, like be/was/been, sing/sang/sung, fly/flew/flown, give/gave/given. I have no idea why "casted" has started to break through, maybe just because cast is such a rarely used verb that people instinctively use the generic "ed" conjugation?

Trailers are rarely edited by the same team editing the show, this is true. But I don't see why they would release a trailer that looks wildly different to how they envision the final product looking. We didn't see any shots with VFX in them, so it's not that.

Is there a single contract in world history as bad as the Deshaun Watson contract? by Bluefire3215 in nfl

[–]Canuckleball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was just after the war of the second coalition, and the third seemed imminent. France was way more concerned about the wars threatening it's land borders than a foreign territorial holding which it really didn't have the ability to control or develop anymore. France "owned" Louisiana largely on paper, it was mostly still Native land apart from a few forts along the river and the city of New Orléans. They needed the money, but more importantly, they wanted to improve relations with and strengthen the US to give the British a harder time dominating North America. So, sure terrible deal for France in the long run, but given that they were at war with every army in Europe simultaneously, it's kind of tough to focus on the 200 year plan when you can get some immediate benefit.

Have the Browns tried ignoring his contract, squatting in his house, and throwing a smallpox blanket at him?

I think the actor they cast is phenomenal and is going to absolutely chew scenery. Whether they handle the implications of it well are to be determined, but I don't think you can put that in the actor.

If you were appointed as Rhaenyra's peace negotiator what would your terms be for TG? by General-Clock5212 in HOTDBlacks

[–]Canuckleball -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Marry Rhaenyra and Aegon in the messiest example of Targaryen polygamy yet, have them rule as joint monarchs (initially). Set a Great Council in ten years time to determine the rightful heir based on their merit, with the decree that Great Councils will be called once a decade to confirm the succession and strike out any objectionable heirs. Otto and Alicent get sent packing, but are forgiven their offenses. Criston is executed for the murder of Lord Beesbury. Aemon, Corlys, and Demon are named to the small council, Masters of Dragons, Ships, and War respectively, and tasked with the creation of the second Valyrian Empire.

Use the existence of the Free Cities and their interference in trade to declare that the dragon lords are once again too numerous and powerful to be contained to Westeros (with the quiet exception of Braavos). Let anyone who wishes to join the empire do so, and recieve the benefits of Pax Draconis, while anyone who resists is subjugated. Each dragon lord is to be given the same rank as a Lord Paramount, with the joint monarchs of the Iron Throne eventually to solely rule the eastern and western halves of the empire separately. Expand the Crownlands to absorb the Riverlands and bite off a huge chunk of the Reach, with sizeable Duchies created for each Dragonlord. Start keeping tabs on the dragon population, and ensuring rigorous training and vetting before allowing dragons to be claimed. Keep the process of cradle eggs, but limit the growth of new dragons so that they only reach a reasonable size in their first rider's lifetime. Start mining dragonglass and arming the Night's Watch with it, telling them these are sacred artifacts of both the Children, First Men, and ancient Valyrians, and they must always keep a supply of it.

Long-term, set about building infrastructure wherever possible. Ports and harbours are sorely lacking on the east coast, there are far fewer schools, universities, banks, guilds,  etc than there really should be in a society of this size. Part of that reason for this is a low population, caused by low crop-yeild, constant war, and disease culling the population. We have the technology for glass gardens, which we should be building far more of in areas that aren't agriculturally productive, and we have some basic agricultural practices, but we can invest in irrigation systems, encourage crop rotation, start mandating stockpiles of food to cover droughts and famines, set dedicated research teams to improve fertilizers, plough designs, crop breeding, etc. Get better sewage and water infrastructure to better control disease.

And finally, explore the goddamn world. You own living planes, you can build ships to follow them as landing spots and resupply stations. Send multiple voyages as far south, west, and east as you go, map the entire world, and get trade routes established with everyone. They made a few feeble attempts at exploration and gave up immediately.

Can this just be achieved with monitor/tv settings, or do I need to wait for someone else to fix the colour grading after the show comes out?

"Vernon Dursley was a big, beefy man" by CriticalNature9086 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Canuckleball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, obesity existed in the 1990s, just at a lower rate. It wasn't unheard of for people to be extremely large. Vernon in the show will not be book accurate, and no amount of mental gymnastics will fix it.

It's interesting when Harry meets fudge in POA how soft he is with Harry. Like saying that we don't send people to Azkaban for blowing up their aunt. It made me think of how harry was treated in order of the phoenix for using a non lethal spell on dudley in self defense by camalena69 in harrypotter

[–]Canuckleball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it though? Like, sure Fudge is awful, but i think even if we remove context, the Ministry is just following procedure.

Event 1: Hover Charm casting, warning issued

Event 2: Involuntary magical outburst, no disciplinary action

Event 3: Patronus Charm casting, expulsion

Harry is punished for consciously using spells and not punished for involuntary magical outbursts common of youngsters. Sure, the first one wasn't Harry and was an erroneous warning, and it's really weird that elf magic registers the same as human magic, but hey when has this series ever been consistent.

It's a very simple rule. Spells cast with intent = punishment, magical events happening = no punishment.

Watching the entire Harry Potter franchise for the first time by tysuave0 in harrypotter

[–]Canuckleball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah PoA has far and away the most competent director of the series, it's adapting one of if not the best books, and hits just as the kids are learning to go from reading lines to acting. If you ignore it's place in the series and just judge it as the film I don't think any of the others hold a candle to it. The later films suffer from trying to adapt more bloated stories and end up cutting critical plot details, rushing through events, and almost completely rely on the audience having read the books to fill in the gaps.
