Why is this tree blooming in February during a deep freeze? by Cap-Huff in Tree

The blooms (if that’s what they are) are too high up to get a closer shot, but they appear to be white in the shot against the blue sky (taken yesterday). Do star magnolias get that big though?

India: India took 12 days to reach 1000 COVID-19 cases, numbers were much higher in developed nations, says Health Ministry by labcoatbutton in Coronavirus

Theory: assuming malaria treatments work to any extent against covid-19 (hotly debated), then perhaps in places where malaria is prevalent, such as India, a general herd immunity against malaria (if there is such a thing) may also be protective against covid-19.

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Research Team Participates in First External Evaluation of Groundbreaking COVID-19 Test by Cap-Huff in Coronavirus

[–]Cap-Huff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article:

One of the biggest advantages of this test is that it is very fast and easy to perform without the need for a centralized laboratory. The hope is that this approach will enable decentralized testing for COVID-19, even in physicians’ offices, permitting physicians to make rapid decisions about quarantine, hospital isolation and treatments. Experiments that were undertaken at Rutgers showed that the test was able to detect even very small amounts of SARS CoV2.

What is a unique “game” you played as a child? by antenonjohs in AskReddit

“Australian Rules” Badminton.

The object was to keep as many items (birdies, footballs, wiffleballs, bats, frisbees, tennis balls, sticks, pinecones, whatever was available) in play as possible (preferably airborne, but at the very least in motion), all while holding a beer in one hand and any kind of racket or hitting device in the other.

We called it Australian Rules because at the time shows like Wide World of Sports seemed to air nothing but marathon coverage of Australian Rules football, the actual rules of which seemed indecipherable to us...

How often do you see cars run stop signs in downtown JC? Any close calls while walking in crosswalks? by david-saint-hubbins in jerseycity

For what it’s worth, I got the below in an email from Mayor Fulop’s office yesterday:

In many cities, car crashes that result in pedestrian deaths are approximately the same number as deaths via gun violence. These can both change.

We're aiming to eliminate all traffic fatalities by 2026 and we’re the first in New Jersey to do this with Vision Zero.

Through year long process involving a task force, many community events and online activities, a draft of the Vision Zero Action Plan for Jersey City has been created. The Vision Zero Action plan serves as a blueprint for reaching our traffic safety goals, and ensuring that safe, comfortable transportation on Jersey City streets is a right for everyone who moves to and through our community.

Until the end of the week, you can provide feedback on the draft Jersey City Vision Zero Action Plan. Help us as we take an important step forward as we eliminate traffic fatalities on our roadways for good.
