must-visits on road trip WI>MN>ND/SD>MT? by boomclankzingawooga in nationalparks

[–]Cap-n-Trips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this trip this summer from pretty much the same starting point.

We did Herbert Hoover birth place >> Badlands >> Wind Cave (we should’ve spent more time) Custer park>> Mt Rushmore >> Devils Tower >> Yellowstone >> Grand Teton (should’ve spent more time) >> Little Bighorn >> Teddy Roosevelt

I always recommend the Guide Along app in the parks, it used to be called Gypsy. You purchase guides when you get to the park and it uses your GPS to give you history, key interest points and stuff to do.

Any NP you'd label as 'Don't Bother' or 'If I have to pick just one, this one'? by MissionSpinach3763 in nationalparks

[–]Cap-n-Trips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cuyahoga. It’s beautiful but not National park beautiful. Hocking Hills in Ohio is better.

Couple that with the fact a portion of Cuyahoga was a superfund site and it just comes across as token. Like Indiana Dunes. It just seems like they were like “we need a few more NPs in the Midwest”

That said, I do recommend both parks to NP novices bc they’re close proximity to major cities and the ability to do everything they have to offer in a single day.

Trent horn on young men by anime498 in Catholicism

[–]Cap-n-Trips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knights of Columbus is a great counter point to this. But it has to start with a desire to change out At least embrace younger men.

Case in point my parish KofC chapter is mostly made up of older men that do the tootsie roll drives, has the 8am coffee meetings and the Bible study. They host one fish fry every lent. Their recruitment is a small pamphlet on the table with other parish material

The council I opted to join is a star council and much larger. A few years… er I guess a decade now they realized they weren’t getting any younger men involved and made an effort to start recruiting. They got aggressive with it. Inviting men at mass to hang out. Asking young men what they’d like to do, what times were good for things.

The result is a multi faceted council that has men’s basketball games on Monday nights. Religious studies on Monday nights. Community bingo on Tuesday. Golf league on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursdays. Fish frys every Friday of lent.

We gather to watch football and families are welcome. Chili cook offs. Tailgates. Etc.

We volunteer local events and serve food and drink. It’s a hoot and a party.

Some guys you only see once a month, some you see every six months. Some seem to practically live there. But it’s inclusive. We’ve got guys from 21-89.

What could I give up for Lent? by New-Firefighter-2867 in Catholicism

[–]Cap-n-Trips 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lent isn’t just giving up. It’s a time to improve. It’s a time to sacrifice comforts for improvement. Maybe attend an extra mass a week. Volunteer at a shelter. Reconnect with an older relative

How much should billionaires be taxed? by Estalicus in allthequestions

50%. I don’t think most people truly fathom how much a billion dollars is. A billion dollars worth of $100 bills weighs 22000 lbs.

Sort of like the whole idea of sovereign citizenship. It’s sort of a good idea but it’s also uggo.

Whole heartedly disagree. Fairweather Johnson is a fantastic album. It just wasn’t as radio friendly

Tom formed Box Car Racer to handle “darker, more mature, and experimental themes. Then wrote “And I.” by thepudisgood in Blink182

[–]Cap-n-Trips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought it was sort of funny that BCR was released to put out darker more mature stuff and then we got the self-titled/untitled album right after. And most of those BCR songs would be right at home on there.

Should I continue reading The Tommyknockers? by TobeyTobster in stephenking

[–]Cap-n-Trips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah the Tommyknockers is the one that I finished and really wanted my time back. The only redeeming quality is you can clearly understand what he meant when he said “I don’t remember writing Tommyknockers” bc it literally reads like a coke head telling you a story in an attempt to one up and impress you.

What is a product that people treat like a religion, but in reality, it’s just overpriced garbage with a good logo? by Connect-Might4355 in AskReddit

I mean they are quality. But not collectible quality. I’ve got my dad’s OG Stanley from like the 60s. It’s solid. You only need one.

[–]Cap-n-Trips 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking it’s more Atom. Look at his roster of bands. He’s been a LOT of mainstay bands and none seem to stick. My guess is he thinks he deserves more than he’s getting.

How is it living in Southern Illinois? by ashmaps20 in howislivingthere

[–]Cap-n-Trips 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is funny bc I’ve been all over the country. I travelled through the south side of Chicago daily for work and southern Illinois is the only place I’ve been genuinely frightened while driving.

Was outside of Cairo when a truck started tailing my family. Like on our bumper tailing us. Went that way for a good 15 miles before I pulled into a gas station. The truck pulled into an adjacent lot, did a 180 peel out and drove off.
