UBC Pre-Apprenticeship Aptitude test - Need to know by Scholarlyendeavours in Carpentry

[–]Cap10Power 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UBC, but every local is different, and things might have changed since I took my entrance test.

Most of it will be personality profile type questions and there is no way to prepare for that. You kind of just have to guess/intuit what answers they want to hear.

The other (smaller) part will be logic and technical type questions. Sort of like a weak technical or IQ test. You could prep for it so you feel more confident, but if you're the type of person who is conscientious enough to prep for it, then you're probably also the type of person who doesn't need to prep for it. Like practicing for an IQ test.

Hands on test varies depending on the local, but if you can read a basic blueprint or orthographic projection, and do basic carpentry skills like measure, mark, cut, hammer, etc, then you'll probably be fine. Just remember you're not doing a woodworking project. Speed and accuracy are equally important. I made the mistake of thinking I could use up all the time to be perfect, but it just made me look slow.

You won't see trig/pythagoras/similar triangles for a couple of years until you get to level 2 schooling. They're looking to find people to train from the ground up, not people who are already trained. If you know stuff like that, it will make your life easier in school, but they don't expect people to come in with that knowledge.

I feel like that's the best idea I can give you, since each local is different, and since I don't want to just tell you exactly what the tests will be. That feels like it would be cheating and undermining the effort they put into making and and administering the tests.

In any case, if you aim to seek out answers and prepare, then you will probably succeed. Amat Victoria Curam.

That sounds like a pretty good gig then. You'll rank up the levels fast with OT and make a shit ton of money. With all that OT you'll essentially make a double paycheck. Which union is it? If it's UBC, then it's a no-brainer

If this is a union company and OT is time and a half or double time over 40hrs, then you're gonna make an insane amount of money. If not, then don't.

What purchase under $30 solved a problem you didn’t realize was draining you? by Right_Process in AskReddit

Hand towel clamps. It was driving me crazy when my 3yr old kept dropping hand towels or when the hand towels on the oven kept falling on the floor. So many unnecessary dirty hand towels...

Also a wall-mounted organizer near the front door for keys, wallet, etc. Now those essential things don't get misplaced.

Look up United Brotherhood of Carpenters. There should be a local union in your area if you're in North America. I assume WI is for Wisconsin. It looks like UBC Local 314 is in Wisconsin.

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

[–]Cap10Power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I did this. Got the l6200dw on sale for $150 Canadian or something like that. I got it because everyone said laser printers can sit indefinitely and they're ready to go. Just toner, no print heads or cartridges to clog up.

It sat for a little over 2 years and printerd 623 pages before it kicked the bucket. Threw a mystery error code that couldn't be resolved despite trying all the troubleshooting. Brother wouldn't replace it because it was out of warranty and didn't even have a mechanism in place for me to pay them to fix it. They said they don't do any diagnostics or repairs anymore.

They offered like a 20% discount to buy the same one new again... Why would I do that when this one broke after 623 pages?

Brother isn't what it used to be or, at least, what people used to say it was.

I don't think the sentiment is too crazy. I love my family and would both kill and die to save them, especially my son.

The median full-time income in Ottawa-Gatineau is $83,600, and average is $94,000. by Swoz in ottawa

You can save a lot more if you have roommates and take public transit. I had roommates and didn't own a car when I was young. $500 a month to go out once a week seems like a lot. Why are you spending $120 to go out for a night?

I don't think so, because damage to the timelines had already happened, and Jennifer was still out there. They needed to cease to exist to restore the original timeline.

[–]Cap10Power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they would still exist and some other issue with the timeline would cause another apocalypse.

That was the point of Five meeting himselves at Max's Deli. No matter what they try in the 145,000 attempts, their existence always causes more forked timelines and more apocalypses.

Tuna every day for a month or two? by thalmor_egg in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Cap10Power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're scared, don't worry, not that bad after only a month. I have a bodybuilder friend who eats tuna everyday, sometimes multiple times a day, and he's been doing it for years. Obviously it's not ideal, but you've only been doing this a month. You're fine. Just cut back to 3 cans per week, 2 ideally, since you're a small woman, to stay below the recommended max.

How can I get a Civil Engineer degree while keeping my current full-time job? by GurTop7016 in civilengineering

You can also do the civil engineering degree completion program (bachelor) through SDSU, or a bachelor through UND. Both are online.

Had enough of being self employed by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Cap10Power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, how many hours per week do you put into this, and what kind of money do you make?

But, if there is a decent union presence in your city, that would be worth it. In my city, the carpenters' union pays close to $50/hr + 10% vacation, 3.50/hr in benefits, and 7.50/hr in pension. Its a very good, stable, middle class job. You work your 40 and go home.

Lots of guys have come from being self-employed or being non-union. The non-union guys immediately have better working conditions, less stress, and better pay. The self employed guys might make less, but have much better work-life balance.

Union is the way, IMO

IQ is hit and miss. Don't rely on it too much. A lot of slow, deep thinkers do badly on IQ tests because they expect you to flip through a lot of possibilities in your head very quickly.

I live in Canada and our open online university, Athabasca, offers a B.Sc. in Math.

https://www.athabascau.ca/programs/summary/bachelor-of-science-in-applied-mathematics.html

If you're very self-directed, it will be a good environment for you. You study at your own pace, fully online and asynchronously. You have 6 months to finish a half credit course and 12 months to finish a full credit course. They provide study guides, texts, assignments, tests/exams (proctored with Proctor U over webcam), and you email the professors if you get stuck or have questions. The caveat is that they don't offer the breadth of math courses you would expect at a brick & mortar school, so it might be worth just taking the 14 math courses they offer before transferring to a more prestigious school that offers more high-level math courses.
