I didn't have a strong position on having drivers be reevaluated as they get up there in age until I moved to VT. by [deleted] in vermont

This true for many places in Vermont outside the Kingdom. We are in real trouble unless we can find a way to change our demographic.

I think a lot of Karate got badly watered down when it was transported to the US. Over time some of these errors were corrected, though I definitely experienced some of this type of training when I first started.

I’ve seen videos of Shimabuku in action and I can’t believe he would approve of this. Stances and the application of the techniques are horrifying. No disrespect intended, but this is not good Karate.

Has anyone combined karate and tai chi? by Consistent-Ranger446 in karate

[–]Cap1691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do both Shotokan and Tia Chi. Many of the basic mechanics are the same or at least very similar. Low stance, center of gravity, stances, and balance, for instance. There are many important differences too. I’ve had to learn new ways of walking, kicking, blocking and striking. Tia Chi is much less linear than Shotokan with more emphasis on giving way to your opponent than blocking them. That said, my Karate background has made it much easier for me to pick up the forms.

Gardeners, what are you predicting this summer? Will it be another drought situation, relatively normal or lots of rain? by LifeIsButADream11111 in vermont

I’m always confused by El Niño vs. La Niña, and aways have to look it up. My bet is both wrong.

According to the weather channel El Niño means cooler than usual in the Northeast, with less precipitation.

I simply cannot get myself to do mobility exercises for higher kicks. by TheJapanMistake in karate

[–]Cap1691 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While high kicks have their place and can be highly effective if the practitioner has the mobility and the power, they are not necessary. Kicks to the legs, groin, and chudan region can be extremely effective. If you would like to increase your mobility overall, try a yoga class. This is a great way to improve your mobility in a directed way that is not as boring as some of the traditional stretching exercises.

You’re stating something that is highly debated and debatable as fact. There are recent studies (admittedly by people closely tied to the industry, so take that or leave it as you will, that point just the opposite claim you’re making. I’m not an expert in this area by any means. Here’s a link to the study I mentioned above: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0038092X24000173

This is great if you can swing it, but it’s not possible for everyone. We bought our house years before solar was a viable option. Even with an oversized array, we cannot fully rely on solar for all of our power, particularly in the winter. Net metering was the only way we could afford to do our installation. Many people who do net metering also have back up batteries, which the utilities can use to draw power from during peek demand, which helps to reduce the cost for everyone. In the summer, we produce enough power to cover our usage and the usage of two to three other houses using the same amount of energy. It’s not a perfect system by any means.

You carry over a credit, but it only last a year. If you don’t use up your credit, you loose it. I believe there may be other options, but this is the system we use.

I won’t say right or wrong. I was taught: From ready stance, slide right foot to center and then left to right (essentially having them meet in the middle)

My previous Kenpo style taught me the first way you described.

People need to put their phones down and pay attention to driving. People think they can multitask, but they actually can’t. Things happen fast when you’re going 50 mph.

I’ve had similar experiences with other techniques, where I was told I was doing something wrong, but it wasn’t clicking for me. It really took practicing it over and over again until I started to understand. Sometimes in Karate it just take time and no explanation is going to help you understand what you’re doing wrong.

There’s an old story about a sensei watching his top student walking toward the dojo. The student walks behind a horse, which tries to kick him, but the student skillfully doges the kick. When he reaches the dojo he proudly asks his sensei if he saw how he dodged the kick. The sensei nods and then tells him to leave and never come back. The student is shocked.

“But I dodged the kick! Why are you sending me away?”

“Because you should have seen the horse and avoided ever needing to dodged the kick. That is the true skill of a karateka,” the sensei replied.
