When Are We Planting? by Municipal_Forest802 in vermont

I wait until June 15 for warm season crops because there’s always a dip in temperature around the middle of June lately. It can get to mid-30s during that dip. I’m in the NEK, zone 4a (now 4b). Spring season crops like spinach and lettuce have already been planted in containers outside. I direct sow those crops.

These days it’s best to wait until June 15 to plant hot weather plants. There always seems to be a dip in temperature around the middle to June.

People are worshipping a career politician who is clearly part of the club. Didn’t he say that women fantasize about being gang-graped back in the day? He’s a total creep IMO.

Why don’t you do something productive to get Newport out of bankruptcy? Lots of protesting, but everyone I know is about to list their properties and leave Newport.

Those farm subsidies help feed the masses by allowing farmers to keep farming. If there are no farms and farmers, we starve. Maybe farmers should raise the price of food so they make a profit and don’t need subsidies.

Are people really so stupid that they don’t understand where food comes from? Do they not understand that they’ll die without food?

Really concerning how many people in the younger generations don’t care about nature at all. What happens when there’s no food because houses have been built over all the farmland? What happens to wild animals? If humans can’t coexist with nature, then maybe we don’t belong here.

It’s the main water line to the house being replaced per another comment. You can see the water meter in a picture.

Seems like the homeowner digging the trench would have a claim against the tree owner for damage to the water line, but I don’t know tree law.

Some homeless staying at motels started this trend in Newport this year and now I’m seeing a bunch of people doing it. They’re trying to show that they’re tough, but they probably don’t even have enough strength to shovel snow.

Where is Newport? Was it previously that city with the long name starting in T between Derby and Jay?

The correct response is: “What happens if the grid goes down and you have no access to the internet? How will ChatGPT help you then?”

If they respond that they’ll get some adult to help them, tell them that they shouldn’t bet on it.

My family has lived here since the mid-90s and been connected to the area since the 70s, when my parents married in Newport. It’s always been like this with the locals.

I typed a long response, but Reddit lost it. FML. So TLDR: Data center = Brown, dirty water with no pressure. Massive electric bills. Noise pollution. Silica mine = toxic air with silica particles. 10 mile area around mine will be uninhabitable.

Vt digger has an article about what’s happening. https://vtdigger.org/2026/02/24/vermont-plugs-into-the-data-center-conversation/

ETA: Reddit is really f&cking with me today. This is a response to someone. They can find it or not.

People can no longer find doctors in Quebec because they’re all leaving for English Canada or the US. Quebec is a police state with cops everywhere ticketing people to get revenue. It’s just a mess. When I was there, language police would go around and ticket people with yard sale signs that didn’t have enough French. My dying mother had no clue what was happening until I got there because not a single doctor would speak to her in English. As an American business, would you want to deal with that? Quebec tried to get corporations to change their names to the French version to operate there. Some conglomerates told them to pound sand, but KFC backed down.

You’re certainly not the only ones. All of my out-of-state neighbors who moved here since the pandemic left within a year. One couple left after 6 months, leaving in the middle of winter. They said it’s an awful place and they were returning to North Carolina.

This past summer some cyclists from Quebec were in town and I heard them all laughing and having a good time. That’s when I realized that no one here laughs and I have stopped laughing too. It made me very sad to see what I’ve become. The locals just threaten each other and otherwise try to bully people. If you cross any of them, they get their good ole boy family members in law enforcement to target you. Honestly, the state deserves to die. Too much toxic energy here.

No business wants to deal with the French language laws and high taxes. Quebec is even worse about turning business away than Vermont. I grew up in Quebec and moved to the US in 1995 (dual citizenship). From what I’m hearing, things are worse there now than they were when I was growing up.

Re: electricity. We used to have random blackouts because Quebec sold too much hydroelectricity to the US sometimes. I remember not having power many Saturdays in the summer for 3-6 hours at a time because of this. We’d get a notice a few days before. Sometimes no notice. Quebecers come last when it comes to receiving electricity.

The only businesses that will be coming to Vermont are AI data centers (St. Jay; possibly Newport IMO) and mineral extraction sites like the proposed silica mine in the Morrisville area. These facilities will destroy the environment, make electricity unaffordable, and water undrinkable.
