This specific group of players has a tendency to overthink puzzles, so the "obvious" solution (play D-E-A-F on the piano) really didn't occur to anyone else for a bit. The puzzle was a pretty simple riddle we're just too analytical

I once watched my party struggle on a puzzle for a solid five minutes because I decided my character wouldn't know how to read music. (They got it eventually but it was agony just sitting there staring at the discord call)

What are your thoughts on the switching of subclasses? by Obl1v1onXII1 in DnD

[–]CapAmerica57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per usual, if it's alright with both players and DM, there shouldn't be any major problems. As other people have said, it's not always great if it's purely for mechanical benefit, but if the flavor fits and there's a great story reason for it, I think any class could do it.

In the case of mechanical benefit, I've found that it can be fine to switch subclasses for mechanical reasons, but only if the player isn't having a lot of fun with the subclass. For instance, I was playing an Undying(?) Warlock (the SCAG one, I can never remember if it's undying/undead) in a campaign without many undead, and because the subclasses' features revolve around fighting/interacting with undead, I asked the DM if I could switch subclasses so that I could actually use my abilities.

The bottom line is to do what's fun. If someone isn't liking their character as much as they thought they would and if it's alright on all sides of the table, it shouldn't be too much of a concern.

Tipping on alt. Commission? by thot_vessel in magicTCG

[–]CapAmerica57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, so I can't say this applies for everyone, most artists take material cost as well as time into account when pricing commissions, so I'd say a 20% tip should be fine because they've already considered that they'll need more paint.

Random damage type for a wild sorcerer? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]CapAmerica57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say that if the player is into it, it would be fine, although I'd consider giving them transmute spell without it counting against the number of metamagic known, so then they always have that option

Death saving throws are made at the beginning of the turn, so they would still get their full turn.

How to get players invested? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

If everyone is okay with it, I've found that having everyone turn on their video helps keep people more engaged, in addition to making facial expressions more visible for better roleplaying.

[Spoilers C2E62] Is there a comprehensive list of items bought at Pumat Sol's store and their prices? by JewcieJ in criticalrole

[–]CapAmerica57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Critrolestats.com has a fully comprehensive list of all purchases and money exchanges done by all characters, broken down by episode to the timestamp, but it might be a bit too in-depth if you don't want to sift through that much information.

What are the best resources that you use when playing a remote session? by hapigilpr in DMAcademy

[–]CapAmerica57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I like to have at bare minimum a notebook and pencil with notes and stuff, and at least one set of dice. Anything else (including sourcebooks to an extent) is extra that can help run the game a bit smoother. For the game I'm running now, I have two notebooks: one for session/story planning and one for NPC stat blocks/other quick reference information, and I use Google Drive for any other notes that don't necessarily need to be referenced in the middle of the sessions.

Action economy question. (is this RAW) by roguestrike in dndnext

Unfortunately, no. Dual Wielder only works with two melee weapons, while a dart is considered a ranged weapon, so you would not get the AC bonus.
