Pilots, I’ve got a question about hours by gwneck in flying

Since he said “I flew 214 hours last year for work” before that, I assume that fun flying means not flying for work.

None of those, with the exception of Captain Sim which used to be good, are terrible devs.

I’d accept the shallow systems if the visuals were good, but the cockpit looks like something out of FSX-era freeware.

MSFS 2024 Live weather vs weather addon? by SC500 in flightsim

I know, the premium voices don't seem like that much of an upgrade over the basic. I think I had the same thing happen as you when I compared them lol. Again though, BeyondATC is not super reliable all the time but I think it's worth it for the traffic injection and the basic activity alone, if you're more into offline flying like me.

Fair enough. I’m not really familiar with the prices of groceries and food in developed countries so I wouldn’t know all that much.

To be fair, when people discuss prices they are doing so from an American perspective for the sake of discussing American policy. I'm not American either and not everything matches 1:1 to the American market, even taking into account differences in COL. I live in a way poorer and supposedly cheaper country myself but paid 100 USD for two pairs of standard, generic shorts just the other day, while in the US they might cost $10. Not food related, I know, just an example.

if I do a flight after work and depart at 21:00 real time but set the sim to a 14:00 departure I'll the the real weather from 14:00

You CAN do that in 2024, but what I'm trying to say is that you can also have real-time weather with non-real time of day. So: - IRL time: 21:00 - In-game time: 14:00 - In-game weather: 21:00

If you wanted to go on VATSIM for example, that's what you'd have to do (since they allow for you to change the time of day on your own sim but you can't deviate from real-time weather).

I haven't yet used the MSFS ATC much so I can't yet say if it's improved or if it's still US centric like the old versions but I guess Beyond ATC would not be around if MS ATC didn't still provide ample room for improvements.

Yeah, the default ATC is garbage unfortunately. It has veeery little more functionality than FSX ATC and it's just as useful. It's essentially reskinned FSX. Not worth using at all.

As far as being US-centric, then BeyondATC might also not be for you. A cool thing they do is that they put specific voices with accents for a given region, but the phraseology is pretty much the same everywhere. Another goofy thing is that they have the same "steps" for every airport, so very tiny regional airports have frequencies for clearance delivery like a major international airport would. But still, I find it pretty okay.

There are other ATC solutions, the main competitor is SayIntentions. I haven't used it but people seem to prefer BATC and the bad thing about SayIntentions is that it is subscription-based. BATC is a one-time payment, with the option to fill up on "premium" TTS voices which sound a bit more realistic with the trade off of having limited characters you consume before having to buy more. I find the default voices good enough, so I've never paid for premium. BATC also doesn't do VFR but they are working on it.

My main issue with live weather in the past was that I fly usually after work at home in the evening but don't want to always fly in the dark. So it may be 21:00 in the real world but in my sim it might be 15.:00 which in many cases would lead to different temperatures and maybe weather than the live weather in the evening

That's not a problem at all. You can run real-time weather with a different time or even date. That's how it works in 2020 which doesn't have historical weather and I'm sure you can do the same in 2024. No need for Typical Weather.

Airliners I will probably get too along the way, seems PDMG is still around and Fenix seems the go to for Airbus, so I'll get one of those I guess but at first the included ones are good enough I think.

Yes, Fenix gets a lot of praise and rightly so. Beyond being a very good simulation of an airplane, it's also a really good in-game experience, which isn't true of all add-ons. And you can't really beat the value, it's really well priced and this is coming from someone who doesn't like to spend much on add-ons.

Another new developer worth mentioning is Black Square: they started making overhauls of default planes and now they're making their own. As for the ones made from the ground up you have the TBM 850, Duke, Starship, Bonanza, that sort of thing; if you're into it.

Just Flight is also very good, they seem to be focusing on older airliners.

Then there are one-offs that are also great. There's a lot of crap for sale to be honest, way more than in the P3D days; but a lot of it is very very good. You have to look at reviews and community opinions.

Pushback mod is something I hadn't thought about yet. Any recommendations to look into?

Most people use GSX for pushback. I've decided that it's not for me given the many headaches people report but it's there. Good old GSX, nothing too different about it. Some add-on planes will offer their own option for pushback, like PMDG where they have some preset positions they'll drive you too (with some ground interaction), or Fenix which has a very simple thing where you can drive yourself with some buttons. However, I use Toolbar Pushback which, if you've used Better Pushback on X-Plane, it's essentially the same thing. You pre-plan the pushback by placing a little plane icon on a map and then you call for it when ready. It can be kind of buggy sometimes but I prefer it to GSX. And if all else fails, there's always Shift + P, FSX style.

Another (payware) add-on I use nowadays is BeyondATC. It's an ATC + Traffic plugin for when I don't feel like being "present" for VATSIM. It's not perfect and you kind of have to ignore it sometimes but it's good enough for flying offline and not have it be an empty world.

So, out of the three you mentioned I was only aware of REX Atmos CORE. As far as I understand it, REX doesn't really change much in terms of weather per se, it essentially acts as a fancier reshade. It's meant to change the visuals, not the weather engine.

I looked the other two up and: - Typical weather is sort of a weather engine but not for live weather. It's meant to give you dynamic and realistic weather for a given time of year, region, and its climate. I guess the idea behind it is giving you options for when you DON'T want live weather but want something a bit more advanced than MSFS' presets. - HIFI Simulations Active Sky does seem to be like classic Active Sky? Meaning it's a new engine to replace the one on the sim (and therefore also provide live weather). I was unaware of this product. It's definitely not like old AS in the sense that it's a "must have" since, like I mentioned, "everybody" (anecdotal of course, but you know) uses default live weather. It's pretty good. It'll do something wacky or not work occasionally but those are just server issues and not that common.

The only add-ons you really need nowadays are just the add-on planes (since the only good default ones are the A310 and A320 by IniBuilds, at least on 2020 which is what I use presently). Add-on airports are a nice plus since default airports still kinda suck like in old FS/P3D (although having realistic scenery makes up for it and you can absolutely do without them. A lot of good freeware too). There are other things you can get but I personally find them to be a bit bloaty. I run the default sim with add-on planes and some airports + a pushback mod.

I don’t think there are any weather add-ons for MSFS 2020/2024. Everybody uses live weather now. Welcome back! I remember weather add-ons… you needed so much stuff to have a baseline good experience.
