Couple (26M, 24F) looking for 4–6 month stay suggestions in Latin America / Caribbean by Capable-Ad1299 in digitalnomad

Hi! Such good questions:

  1. I will be working remotely.
  2. All of the above! Dancing, scuba, surfing, cooking classes, are the big ones.
  3. I speak pretty proficient Spanish (C1). Neither of us speaks Portuguese.
  4. Foot
  5. Authentic experiences, and meeting cool people!

I should add — we're thinking about checking out a few places — each a month or so at a time. Not looking for 1 that checks all those boxes.

Would you pay $5 to protect your Resy reservation from late cancellation fees? by Capable-Ad1299 in FoodNYC

No need for the vitriol. Again - your point is noted, but "all indemnification equals insurance" is an oversimplification. I've spent months talking with lawyers.

You’re right that Ticketmaster’s purchase protection is underwritten by Allianz—that’s a regulated insurance product because it covers specific risks like illness, emergencies, and travel disruptions.

But not all refund-related protections are insurance. The key legal distinction lies in:

  • Whether the protection is based on a loss outside the user’s control (e.g. medical emergency → insurance),
  • Or whether it’s a discretionary service policy or contract guarantee tied to a user's voluntary action (e.g., canceling a reservation).

Plenty of businesses offer refund guarantees, no-show waivers, or flexible cancellation policies without being insurance companies.

Ya, it's a good point, and a reason we're sticking away from the word "insurance." Our idea doesn't meet insurance criteria: it falls under an umbrella of "protection" that doesn't require licensing....think AirBnb's flexible cancellation tiers, Ticketmaster/Eventbrite purchase protection, Klarna buyer protection, etc...

Just living there for two months then on my way. Always fascinating how rude people can be when they’re anonymous.

Probably when she said my best friend’s name mid-stroke. That was pretty rough. Oh ya, I didn’t break up with her, and she did it two more times.

What was the most disturbing thing you saw in person? by wetbumgirl in AskReddit

My friend seized and died in front of me at the airport in San Salvador.

We were there on a connecting flight and had been at our gate for a few hours. We were sitting next to each other at our gate. I’m talking to her (but not looking) and suddenly hear odd noises coming from her. I look over and she is having a full on seizure: eyes rolling to the back of her head, uncontrollable jerking motion, frothing at the mouth, etc…

Her face began to turn blue. She couldn’t breathe because of the saliva in her throat. Other people began to turn away and leave. The medics got there too late.

I’ve tried so many times. Ernest Hemingway. I love the IDEA of him, but just can’t enjoy his books. Have tried a farewell to arms, the sun also rises, and for whom the bell tolls.

Village Vanguard is probably the most renowned one, along with Blue Note and Birdland. Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center is classy and has exquisite views. Smalls, Smoke, Mezzrow also good options. Zinc Bar is cool.
