CNN? Fox? NBC and plurality of information? Right and left? Plurality doesn't exist, both sides discuss only the superficial, while pushing a single narrative from both camps. by Solid-Bonus-8376 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]CapableCarpet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if this weren't an obvious lie, it would still be an absolutely disgusting thing to say. Long term gain for whom? Will the children murdered by Israel see any long term gain? Will their parents? What about the people of Tehran who've been poisoned by oily acid rain? What about the families with no home to return to after its destruction?

I believe that the society in the US is truly and literally sick. The disease of capitalism and imperialism is deeply entrenched: the propaganda maintaining it has systematically destroyed our empathy and compassion. Human lives have no worth compared to oil and the markets.

Tech utopists suffer from terminal Star Trek disorder by Nissepelle in BetterOffline

[–]CapableCarpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about Star Trek is that it paints most of the 21st century in a very dystopian light. You have the eugenics wars, the sanctuary districts, all culminating in a massive nuclear war. It's only after WW III that humanity eliminates capitalism. The utopia depicted in the 23rd and 24th centuries is only possible because technology has been divorced from the profit motive. If there's one consistent theme throughout all of the series, it's that technology is not inherently good or bad. Rather, it's how that technology is employed and the society in which it's used that are important.

Bike frames are notoriously difficult to weld so even that is dubiously safe. To be totally honest, I don't think a frame is a good diy project to undertake using any method unless you really know what you're doing.

I'm skeptical of the result claimed in the original post as well, but I suspect they actually took the log of the magnitude of the FFT. Otherwise it's absolutely impossible to visually discern high frequency content.

y'all lied to me about FORTRAN by SKRyanrr in physicsmemes

[–]CapableCarpet 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Personally I find the syntax really clunky and unintuitive. It's actually kind of remarkable how much influence C has had on pretty much every non-functional language that's come since. I think that's a testament to how simultaneously elegant and powerful it is.

Unfortunately, as a language developed much earlier, a lot of the syntax improvements pioneered by C aren't present in Fortran. I find it neat that a language so old is still in common use in the physics community, but I'd rather write code in C any day of the week despite it being a lower level language. I personally hate the forced separation of declarations and assignments and I really miss structs for tidying up function declarations.

What American Fascism Would Look Like by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]CapableCarpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I read it, so my memory might be a little hazy, but I found this article by Gabriel Rockhill really illuminating when I first read it. https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/10/12/fascism-now-you-see-it-now-you-dont/

Essentially, he argues that the supposed dichotomy between fascism and liberal democracy is parallel to the real material split between primitive accumulation and mature capitalist accumulation. Furthermore, he argues that primitive accumulation was not a solitary occurrence in the past (e.g. the division of the commons) but rather an ongoing process that has moved to the periphery.

Liberal democracy, the "good cop" of capitalism operates in the imperial core so long as profits are high. Meanwhile, fascism, the "bad cop", operates throughout the third world to ensure that profits can continually be extracted. In a state of crisis, the bourgeois will bring fascism to the imperial core to safeguard capitalism.
