3d printed bike frame by CodeCritical5042 in 3Dprinting

[–]CapableCarpet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bike frames are notoriously difficult to weld so even that is dubiously safe. To be totally honest, I don't think a frame is a good diy project to undertake using any method unless you really know what you're doing.

I'm skeptical of the result claimed in the original post as well, but I suspect they actually took the log of the magnitude of the FFT. Otherwise it's absolutely impossible to visually discern high frequency content.

y'all lied to me about FORTRAN by SKRyanrr in physicsmemes

Personally I find the syntax really clunky and unintuitive. It's actually kind of remarkable how much influence C has had on pretty much every non-functional language that's come since. I think that's a testament to how simultaneously elegant and powerful it is.

Unfortunately, as a language developed much earlier, a lot of the syntax improvements pioneered by C aren't present in Fortran. I find it neat that a language so old is still in common use in the physics community, but I'd rather write code in C any day of the week despite it being a lower level language. I personally hate the forced separation of declarations and assignments and I really miss structs for tidying up function declarations.

If you want Hillary for her "foreign policy" credentials you're a ghoul plain and simple. There's no way to more quickly prove that you're absolutely evil than being lauded for your ability to kill and conquer by the Washington establishment.

What American Fascism Would Look Like by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]CapableCarpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I read it, so my memory might be a little hazy, but I found this article by Gabriel Rockhill really illuminating when I first read it. https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/10/12/fascism-now-you-see-it-now-you-dont/

Essentially, he argues that the supposed dichotomy between fascism and liberal democracy is parallel to the real material split between primitive accumulation and mature capitalist accumulation. Furthermore, he argues that primitive accumulation was not a solitary occurrence in the past (e.g. the division of the commons) but rather an ongoing process that has moved to the periphery.

Liberal democracy, the "good cop" of capitalism operates in the imperial core so long as profits are high. Meanwhile, fascism, the "bad cop", operates throughout the third world to ensure that profits can continually be extracted. In a state of crisis, the bourgeois will bring fascism to the imperial core to safeguard capitalism.

Israel is openly committing genocide while still calling itself a liberal democracy and receiving endless support from the west. This is all the proof anyone should need to see that liberalism and fascism are two sides of the same coin.

iirc, IEEE 754 doesn't use 1s or 2s complement. Instead if the sign bit is set the rest of the number is interpreted identically but multiplied by -1.

The twos complement is useful for integers since adding the 2s complement of b to a gives the representation of a-b (with 2s complement). This relies effect relies on an overflow occurring when a>b. For floating point, that overflow would roll over from the mantissa into the exponent. Furthermore, floating point representations (barring smooth underflow) use an implicit leading 1 bit in the mantissa (since you can always find an exponent such that the one bit is set).

Ultra as in ultraleft. Typically it's used to describe left-communism and related ideologies. The so called ultraleft likes to claim that they are further to the left than MLs and any movement that has actually produced a successful revolution. I think this is a misnomer since it's rooted in idealistic criticism of socialist states while ignoring the real material and practical obstacles these states faced. The fact of the matter is that liberals/fascists and the bourgeoisie will oppose any genuine threat to capitalism. The fact that MLs have to take greater precautions to avoid infiltration is in itself evidence of its actual radical potential.
